good for long slow steam cooking – One could say this is a piece of crap. BUT look at the price. It's small economical on bench space. My home one is used say 5 out of 7 days. I have a… Read more

second one in my van, no not an RV just a medium small liver. It's tiny size is a great boon.

For those complaining of alge in water tank, keep the light off it. Use a rag or put something square up against it.

Water in door?? Funny mine came with a flappy piece of paper informing that would happen, Try non steam roast setting 230°C set to any time you want and walk away. If you do this while it's still hot just a few minutes. Works excellently. (for that). I've done this every so often and it still sparkles. 3 years so far. Also helps the rust issue. Finally after a cook, leave the door ajar to first detent to help it dry.

It grills pretty good but one needs to juggle the rack height, Crazy stepped oven rack does not offer many choices as the height is dead center of the rails, meaning it's the same either way. -Dumb!

The timer is limited to 2 hours' If used for a 12 hour 60°C cook = pain, also one needs to empty the microscopic catch can about every 1/2hour never the less water still ends up on the bench. Yes the drain is clean and open. On this point I see that there is not many ovens that stream and heat (cook) at the same time. This one does. Puts it way ahead in my book.

The little book shows precious little technical uses. Have to learn by trial and error. Some issues. Internal rusting. flimsy racks. Odd size preventing one using a sturdier oven rack inside. I use a 9" square x 2" baking tray quite successfully.

For what it's worth ,we have install one of these in the kitchen of aged care to reheat prepared meals. 2 Years in and still OK. Sure beats nuking in the dreaded micro. Residents now actually eat the heated meals.

It's asian built just to offer a product range. I don't believe it was intended to //really// work or be used seriously. But it does so please don't tell them or it will be discontinued.

Any way what would I know , I'm just a bloke.

Better improvement then the last model – Order this 12:1 Sunbeam to replace our Multifunction oven and air fryer. The old oven was a mean machine, excellent air fryer and long lasting. That… Read more

was the main reason for me to upgrade to 12:1. We ordered through Mitch’s and Brown in Geraldton.

We worked on a minesite so the usage of the 12 and 1 is 24 hrs and with so many team members on both day and night shift, we have opportunities to fully test this oven. More often than not we don’t clean the oven, basically we just cover the bottom tray with foil and that about it. The window cleaning is easy, just a wipe with detergent.

The last three days of using the 12 and 1 appeared to be easy to clean. I did notice we need to do the preheat or prime the oven few time a before the smoke and a Lee go away. After that the was good to use. The digital readout is easy to see and navigate, I did not like turning the dial from the previous oven

The noise factor on air fryer is much quieter, and I do noticed the unit provide a much better heating. So far we only used two main function: air fryer for cooking chips and sausage rolls, and the is pizza.

The light function is definitely good and must for all mini oven. Overall it a nice compact oven and if it built like the last oven; which I already can tell it is. Then this one will last for a few years.

toaster in one would be a space saver, and it is.

For the functions we use, it works well and cooks evenly and quickly. It's very easy to use thanks to the large display and well thought out user interface.

The included accessories are perfect for most uses and little features like the magnet rack catch are handy.

My negatives are the same as everyone else, cleaning... It gets a lot of use in our house, sometimes multiple times a day and can get quite grubby - The drip tray and racks are easy enough, but the rest is a pain - to be honest, I just wipe off what I can and leave it, but it would be nice if there was some sort of way to stop drips hitting the element covers.

I'd buy another if this one gave up though, so it's mostly positives.

use our full-size oven any more because this air fryer cooks everything we need in a fraction of the time, and doesn’t have to be left to heat up for extended periods before we can put food in it. I’m definitely not a professional at air frying food, and personally I still prefer deep-fried potato chips over any I’ve been able to make from fresh potatoes at home, but I do love the convenience and health benefits of being able to make them myself. Mostly we use this device in place of our standard oven - cooking home-made sausage rolls, roasted vegetables, biscuits, scones, cakes. And of course sometimes using the rotating basket for hot chips.

For most things we find that this air fryer takes half the time to cook something compared to instructions given in recipes. So generally if something says to bake for 25 minutes I will set the timer for 10 minutes - most of the time it’s just about done at that point. So not only is the food cooked faster, but there’s no time or electricity spent waiting around for the oven to heat up either.

Sure, if I’m baking cakes and scones to take to a party I might use the full-size oven for the extra cooking space and maybe a slightly better result.. but for every day use, and when cooking for family and friends, we use this air fryer oven for everything

I’m overall very pleased with this little product and have recommended it to many others.

kitchen purchases I've ever made.

At only $119 the temp control is the basic 'ON/OFF' type so you'll need to preheat it first with anything prone to burning easily like toasting bread etc. It has two elements at the top and two on the bottom and three shelf positions. You can choose between having only the two top elements, only two bottoms ones or all on at once which means it's easy to optimise for things like grilling open sandwiches or baking or just warming things up.

One warning I'd give is that the top gets hot so don't leave anything heat sensitive on top while in use. On the other hand, I use this 'feature' to warm plates or preheat the next dish to save time and energy. My power bills have gone down since using this instead of my normal oven for most things - but of course, they'll just jack up the power costs to compensate!

air fryer, and we bought it on 31 Mar 24, Sunday. When we got home, we air fried some chicken straight away! Although the outcome was not crispy, the chicken wings were cooked and juicy. We also tried some chicken portion, still it does not give the brown or crisp outcome. Yesterday we used the pizza function, the outcome was fantastic, we were impressed. Our last test on the machine this morning was a cake. Outcome? Its good, it does not require longer baking time as compared to the conventional kind I suppose.

More importantly to me about this air fryer is, the "easy clean" function with steam. This is the ultimate reason why we had our eyes on this machine. It is so easy to clean compared to our old Instant Pot Vortex, which is impossible to clean around the coil area. Hence, oil stain accumulated. The "easy clean" function definitely cuts down the cleaning time.

Although this machine 'does not crisp or brown' the chicken like our old Instant Pot Vortex, it is easy to clean and very quiet.

Overall, this Russell Hobbs Air Fry Toaster Oven does not crisp food as compared to Instantpot airfryer. I believe it is the glass door which has a gap, this allows heat to emit from the glass door. At the end of the day, we pulled out our old Instantpot airfryer again.

I purchased this combo from kitchen Warehouse Bundall. Best toaster I have had in years and the jug is nice and quiet and boils quickly. In addition easy to clean and look stylish. Full marks for this duo Sunbeam

A benchtop oven cooking crusty pizza with hot chips on side

Which foods can you cook in a toaster oven?

You can cook a variety of sweet and savoury foods in a benchtop/toaster oven (also known collectively as compact ovens or electric benchtop ovens).

This includes pizza (of course, not the woodfired kind), baked potatoes, roast veggies, spring rolls, nuggets, roast nuts, cookies and toasted sandwiches. You can even use a compact oven to bake a cake.

What is a toaster oven good for?

Its small, compact size

A small toaster oven shouldn’t take up too much space in your kitchen, and is also portable. This is ideal if you move a lot, as an installed oven isn’t a guarantee in every living space.

Additional cooking space

This is especially useful if you have:

  • a large family or household, and your installed model lacks the required oven space to cook dinner for everyone.
  • a celebration or holiday scheduled and you need to cook a meal with multiple courses.
  • a regular-sized electric oven but frequently cook multiple foods that require different cooking temperatures. By splitting food between the oven and toaster oven, you won’t have to wait around for one food to finish cooking before your food prep is well underway.

It's cheaper than a regular oven

The purchase price and installation costs of standard ovens make them more expensive than toaster ovens. Since benchtop ovens also cook food faster using less energy, they are gentler on your electricity bill, too.

A toaster oven has more functionality than a pop-up toaster

While pop-up toasters do the job when it comes to toasting thin, sliced bread, a toaster oven is able to prepare other bakery-style treats such as pastries, garlic bread and melted cheese on toast.

It’s easy to clean

With less nooks and crannies and a smaller surface area in general, a benchtop oven is much easier to navigate than a regular oven. Simply use a dish cloth, some warm water, white vinegar and dish soap.

Types of compact ovens

Toaster ovens

ToasterOven

These toaster ovens can usually toast up to six slices of toast, and some models include settings that let you choose your preference for either ‘light, medium and dark’ toast shades.

As well as making toast, often even lower-priced models of compact ovens are equipped with the functionality to let you bake, roast, grill and warm foods.

Compact toaster ovens are affordable, with prices starting as low as $29, such as for the Kmart 9L toaster oven (pictured, left).

Benchtop convection ovens

GlassOven

These sometimes have a similar appearance to a regular toaster oven, however there are also plenty of glass convection ovens (pictured, left). These use a sizeable heat-resistant glass bowl to place food in, while the lid contains a heating element and fan.

No matter their design, these types use convection technology to cook food.

While both regular toaster ovens and convection ovens use a combination of radiant heat, warm air and conduction, a benchtop convention oven also uses a fan to ‘turbo charge’ the warm air circulating food. This makes food cook faster and more evenly.

Pros
Multiple cooking methods available, including: steam, air fry, dehydrate and broil.
Cooks food faster than a full-sized convection oven, at a lower temperature.
Cheaper to buy and run than full-sized convection ovens.
Cons
Can have limited features compared to a full-sized convection oven or convection microwave oven.
May not be big enough to replace a full-sized oven entirely.

Other factors to consider when buying a toaster oven

Capacity

Capacity for a benchtop oven can range from around 9 to 45L, and generally the larger capacity, the bigger the dimensions of your new appliance will be, too.

If you’re using your toaster oven to cook meals, your required capacity will depend on the number of people in your household, and how much food you intend to cook in one session. Also consider the main type of food you’ll be cooking. For instance, if you're making large pies or pizzas, make sure the toaster oven can fit your favourite foods.

Pro tip: Try and strike a balance between the amount of bench space you can spare, and a litre capacity that can cook your favourite foods. If you have limited bench space but a large family or household, this might be tricky.

Cost and functionality

The average price of a benchtop toaster oven can range from $29-500 (with the most premium models close to $2,000). The cost depends on the range of cooking functions and extra features you opt for.

Entry-level toaster ovens: These can be very affordable, starting from $29. Even a cheap model usually lets you bake, roast, grill, toast and reheat, with adjustable temperature controls up to 250 degrees Celsius, and a 30 minute and/or 60 minute timer.

Mid-range toaster/benchtop ovens: Mid-range models, such as the Russell Hobbs toaster oven and the Air Fry Crisp’N Bake houses a larger capacity. These usually also offer extra functions – in this case working as a 2-in-1 oven air fryer. The Kmart 3-in-1 Air Fryer Oven for $129 includes a dehydrator.

Higher-end models: These can feature up to fifteen functions. For example, Breville's toaster oven, the Smart Oven Pro, features ten cooking functions including a cookie making function and a broiling function. It also works as a slow cooker, and is convection-powered.

More premium benchtop ovens can usually also replace a microwave with included warm, re-heat and defrost modes. Others yet claim to make wood-fired style pizza in two minutes.

Keep in mind that price isn’t necessarily an indicator that a model will have the right features for you. It helps to think about which foods you commonly cook, then look out for cooking functions that correspond with these. While choosing a model with fancy features might be exciting at first, ultimately it's going to be a waste of money if you hardly use the extra features.

Extra features

There are some extra features that can make your benchtop or toaster oven easier to use and more functional.

  • Controls: These should include, as a minimum, temperature controls and a timer. Check that controls are easy to read and navigate.
  • Timers: Check that these provided a clearly audible sound and visual signal once your food is ready.
  • Custom food trays: These assist the cooking method your toaster oven allows, for example: a pizza pan or roasting tray.
  • Auto-eject racks: automatically push racks halfway out of the toaster to check food or remove it
  • Adjustable racks: let you select the rack height to fit larger food.
  • Accessories: These will depend on your specific model, but examples include an air fryer insert, or rack tongs and a lid holder for safety when using glass ovens.

Our reviewers offer up some of the best real-world product information available. You can narrow down your shortlist and view toaster and benchtop oven reviews today.
