My machine was an unwanted gift, so I have no receipt for warranty repair. Hence, I've just gone back to my little Sunbeam compact cheapy espresso machine that's still working great, albeit a bit more hassle with no grinder built inside. The positive - Great espresso when it worked (for only 2 months) Does anyone want any parts for their POS Breville BES870BKS? I'm stripping mine down and throwing the rest away.

good cup of coffee very simply and that is exactly what this machine does. It has produced excellent quality cups of coffee (usually 4 a day) with very little maintenance and very little fuss. It has been repaired 3 times during it's life but has always returned producing the same excellent product. Cleaning is easy and there is little mess from grounds. As someone who most consider to be a coffee snob, for a consistent easy to use device, I recommend this machine highly.

an error message 'attach steam tip'? I use the machine for one coffee a day, occasionally two, and it is cleaned and descaled regularly as reminded by the automatically generated message. I contacted Nespresso re this fault, and they were great! I can't fault them. I packed up the machine and took it to the post office to be sent off for repair four days ago, postage is covered by Nespresso. (I had to buy a box and bubble wrap from Bunnings for approx. $6.00). Today I have received notification that it has been fixed and will be delivered back to me today, just in time for the weekend! I have been very happy with my purchase and really impressed that I wasn't out of pocket for the repair, and the quick turnaround. Hopefully my machine will last for many more years.

I've saved tens of thousands over the past 13 years on these two machines. If my wife and I each bought one a coffee a day from a Starbucks etc say average cost over past 13 years is $4 for a flat white, that would equate to $37,960 (yep thirty seven THOUSAND dollars over 13 years) or I could buy a $700 Breville and fresh beans every week - and woohoo savings all the way down....

It has decent enough features and it's always nice being able to instantly steam the milk during or right after pulling a shot. If you're a DIYer you can also implement quite a few mods to give it even more features and functions. For the price this is an excellent machine. Whether this is the best option now in 2025 - probably not but if you do get it know that this coffee machine can pull excellent shots when paired with a more capable grinder and will last quite a while.
The grinder is great for its price and features, but once you delve deeper into the coffee world you will quickly realise its limitations and will eventually be looking for something better.

support and had an expensive service. Another year later the same issue but now the actual casing is melting due to the heat and we can't use. Reached out again to Breville Support providing the previous case numbers, photos etc. Their response was "Can you tell me what the issue is?" They obviously hadn't read the case (or previous case) notes or looked at the pics or information provided.
Customer "Support" eventually provided a 3rd party service company after requesting again (service provider different to the first time) and a $900 quote later aparantly it's my issue "your responsibility out of warranty" with no regard to fire safety or a faulty machine breaking down every year since purchase. Overheating is a common issue apparantly and Breville ignore the problem and don't stand by their product.
For a $3K machine you would expect it to last longer than 2 years and have ongoing over heating issues every year since to a point where the metal casing is melting.
Do your math before investing in Breville's expensive Coffee Machines. Their products are amazing when they work but they dont work for long and cost a fortune.
It is also dissapointing that they don't care about fire risks and customer safety.

As someone who enjoys espresso-based drinks but doesn't have professional barista experience, I found this machine to be an excellent balance between automation and hands-on coffee making.
One of the standout features is the Impress Puck System. It takes much of the guesswork out of dosing and tamping, helping create a consistent coffee puck every time. Before using this machine, I often struggled with uneven tamping and messy preparation, but the BES876 makes the process cleaner and far more reliable.
The built-in grinder is another highlight. Freshly grinding beans directly into the portafilter noticeably improves flavor and aroma compared to pre-ground coffee. The grind adjustment settings allow for fine-tuning, making it easy to experiment with different beans and achieve the desired extraction.
Espresso quality has been impressive. The machine produces rich, flavorful shots with a thick crema when paired with quality coffee beans. Temperature stability has been excellent, and once I learned the basics of dialing in my grind settings, I was able to consistently make café-quality drinks at home.
The steam wand performs very well for milk-based beverages. It creates smooth microfoam suitable for cappuccinos and lattes, and while it requires some practice, the results are rewarding. Making latte art became much easier as my technique improved.
Build quality feels premium throughout. The stainless-steel construction gives the machine a solid and durable feel, and the controls are intuitive enough that new users can become comfortable with them fairly quickly. Maintenance is straightforward, with clear reminders for cleaning cycles and descaling.
While the machine occupies a fair amount of counter space and carries a higher upfront cost than basic coffee makers, it easily justifies the investment for anyone who regularly buys espresso drinks from coffee shops. Over time, the savings and convenience add up significantly.
Overall, my experience with the Breville The Barista Express Impress BES876 has been outstanding. It delivers excellent espresso, simplifies the preparation process, and provides an enjoyable coffee-making experience that bridges the gap between beginner-friendly convenience and genuine barista-style control.

comparison if you are trying to decide between models.
Know that any of these machines are probably going to die within 3-5yrs, and its a bit of luck which component dies as to whether the machine is still usable.. and its unlikely a repair is worth while.. so although I am a fan of the Pro... there is definitely merit in buying the Express version because the $ value is superb.
But.. there are many reasons why you might choose the Barista Pro.. the biggest ones are it has a better grinder (vs the express which was a bit crude and got out of alignment from time to time), the Pro also heats up near instantly which is a luxury but still nice.. but more importantly its a more even heat which in theory (and according to reviewers) means less randomness when you pull a shot.. its just a better machine...
I stressed out when I first used the Pro, because a) the grouphead wont even turn beyond a few degrees.. I dunno why Breville make their machines so tight to use, but you don't actually need to turn it far, just if its snug its fine.. it will loosen up over the years.. but also when I first started making coffee my coffee was coming out terribly.. like.. even after dialling everything in, only a small volume was coming out.. I thought my machine was defective.. BUT... here is the cool thing about the pro.. you can manually adjust the volume of water that comes out when you click the 1cup or 2cup button.. so actually you can tweak things yourself which I have now done and feeling great! However that process even for a relatively experienced home barista took me quite a few hours and youtube videos.. a bag of beans getting it wrong.. but I have it now.. but if you are totally new, this could definitely be a barrier for you.. but it can be overcome if your heart is in it =)
Overall very happy.. just need to see what the longjevity is like, the more electronics on a machine the more risk I feel that things can fail.. but having had fancy brand machines in the past, I am very much a fan of the Breville range.

filter Coffee machine which would last hubby and I around 4-5 years, making lovely hot coffee that tasted great for a couple of hours.
Over the last 10 years these machines have failed at around two years.
With my latest purchase on 1st August 2023 I was offered an extended warranty. Due to the last few Coffee Makers previously failing so early I decided to take the extra warranty. This machine just stopped working June 2024 after 10 months, still under the Manufacturer Breville warranty.
I returned it to Good Guys who were great , and replaced the machine 5 June 2024. This new machine decided to stop working after a batch was brewed one day, it turned itself off never to start again as its predecessors did, dying at just under 1 year.
Good Guys again replaced the machine on 1 June 2025.
So I have been using the 3rd Breville Coffee Maker most days ☕️ as at 27 June 2025 it has been working a few weeks. I note a strange plastic smell emanating from the machine when brewing since the outset, which I haven't noticed on prior machines. I find the coffee no longer tastes good for an extended time, but quickly tastes bitter, so not advisable to brew a large pot. If you want 2 people to have 2 cups, make a separate batch for a 2nd cup.
Before first use, I did run a clear filtered water cycle twice through the machine but it continues to smell. I only use filtered water in it.
After speaking to the staff at the store, it was agreed that if the machine failed again under warranty I would get a refund and look for another brand to purchase.
I'm interested to see if Breville can explain how 2 Coffee machines have failed within 12 months, and the brewing quality is poor. I needn't have bothered with the extended warranty as the machines are such low quality they are failing early under 12 months.
My thoughts and experience having used multiples of these machines are that this is built in obsolescence. Breville are possibly producing this product with declining quality and longevity.
I do not recommend this product if you expect more than 10 to 12 months from it.
It does have a couple of features that may be handy, if you do happen to buy one.. A Timer to pre-set your coffee brew to switch on so it is brewed at a predetermined time, and a clock. A 'strength' button that illuminates. I did try this but haven't noticed a difference in the brew.
I'm very disappointed in this product as I loved how this was once a reliable well priced Coffee machine, but no longer.

excellent. It was shipped with the incorrect hopper but Breville were quick to ship out a replacement. There was a small learning curve at the start, but the on-screen guidance makes a big difference and quickly helped me dial in the coffee just right.

It’s definitely an expensive machine, but if it’s within your budget, I’d absolutely recommend it.

My machine has started leaking, a slow seep. It is constantly sitting in a puddle of water. It was only a couple of months old when I noticed it and I spent the next couple of months making sure it was the machine, not user error.
Now to the customer service, or lack thereof. To have my faulty $1,100 coffee machine looked at, I have to pack it up, take it to a post office and send it back to them. They'll look at it and decide what to do from there. We'll be without our coffee machine for at least two weeks, not to mention the inconvenience of having to return such a large machine.
I've been a faithful Nespresso customer for 15 years. I'm on my fourth machine. Had I realised their faithful clients are now being treated as a number, I would have bought the Breville Barista I was considering.
Note Added: After lengthy discussions, Nespresso were able to resolve my machine problems to my satisfaction. Despite Australia Posts's usual attempts to mutilate a successful conclusion, I am now enjoying my morning coffee, made with with my non-leaking Virtuo Creatista. Thank you, Nespresso.

the best endorsement I can give any product.
My previous machine produced excellent coffee throughout its life and required no servicing. The only noticeable decline after nearly a decade was reduced steam pressure for milk texturing, which is understandable given its age and daily use.
I purchased the new BES920 in the Sea Salt White finish, and it looks fantastic in the kitchen. The colour gives the machine a modern, premium appearance and is a refreshing change from my original stainless-steel model.
From the very first coffee, I could tell the machine was performing at its best. The heat-up time is faster, the steam pressure is significantly stronger, and milk texturing is quicker and easier. Most impressive was the espresso itself. My very first shot extracted beautifully at just over 9 bar, produced excellent crema, and delivered a smooth, balanced flavour. With medium-roast beans and a brew temperature of 94°C, the result was one of the best coffees I’ve made at home.
Having used the same model for almost 10 years, I was able to appreciate how much performance had gradually been lost in my old machine without me realising it. The new BES920 reminded me just how capable this machine is when operating at full factory performance.
Over the years I’ve looked at many other espresso machines, but I never found a reason to move away from the Dual Boiler. It offers outstanding espresso quality, excellent steam performance, and reliable day-to-day operation. For home coffee enthusiasts who want café-quality coffee without spending several times more on a prosumer machine, I believe the BES920 remains one of the best choices available.
I would happily recommend this machine to anyone. After 9.5 years with my first BES920, I purchased the exact same model again without hesitation. For me, that says everything.
And now another machine still in warranty that this one was replaced with and still have another 7… Read more
