If I was to try an alternate brand of 'combo' (like the Sonys or Panasonics), I would consider something like this. Nice silver finish, easy operation, remote offers most functions, easy to understand on-screen menus. Simple setup.

I've had this unit a few years. The VHS side has been excellent, whilst the DVD side used to play DVDs when i first bought the unit however over the past 5 years it keeps saying "disc error"
