A joy to cook with – The ease of use and the instant rapid heat is fantastic, love the booster function. Best of all it is a dream to clean.

controls when turned on are so small, I needed my reading glasses to use them. I enjoy my cooking and could foresee the stresses of having glasses next to me for cooking not to mention the other complex settings on the panel. That was the deal breaker even though I was offered a replacement for the faulty one. Then there would be the additional cost of reinstalling by a certified electrician. I have a Bosch pyrolytic oven and wanted a Bosch induction cook top to kind of match up. Sadly that wont be happening as they all seem to have the same controls layout. I have since purchased an IKEA unit that is so simple to use, no complexities with easy to read controls and half the price !!

local Good Guys. Unfortunately when I got there, the 3 different types, of well known brand names, were not in stock currently. That left me with the option of waiting for something to come in, or go with this Technika option, a brand I had never heard of. The salesman was quite positive about the brand, stating that they are Australian made although maybe the parts come from China, but what doesn't these days. I take the salesman's advice very lightly as obviously they just want the sale. Although he did manage to get me over the line when he mentioned they have a 5 year warranty, which was well above the 2-3 year warranty of the other leading brands that I was looking at. I decided to give it a go, it was affordable, supported by a large retailer being Good Guys and even if I only get 5 years out of it I would be more than happy with that. I am an electrician so that helped that I didn't have to get anyone to install it for me. And if you did have to pay someone it should be maximum one hours worth of work if the sizing is correct and the bench already cut out. Within an hour I had it installed and up and running. It is all touch control which I like as our old one had control knobs which ended up breaking and they just build up with gunk over the years. It is super easy to control and operate, has a premium look and feel to it despite being in the cheaper end of the market. It is super easy to clean as it is basically just a plane of glass. The controls can also be locked so it will not auto turn on or kids cannot accidentally use it. Have been using it for about a month now, every night, and am very impressed. Will see if it continues to perform but so far I would be happy to give this brand a try on other things also. If I ever have to deal with customer service I will return and update this review as that can be what makes or breaks a quality brand and product.

Beyond offering me 5 different types of cooking options it gives me the ability to cook 2 different types of cooking at the same time. How creative and prctical! For example I can steam fish or veggies, create a beautiful pot roast, boil pasta, potatoes or even just blanche my vegatables. I can also deep fry or I can even do low temperature cooking with induction, which mean I can perfectly melt chocolate. It's precise, it is also fast due to the boost function, is also responsive and accurate ensuring I get perfect results every time. Easy to use electronic dispaly with timer function, energy efficient and all accessories are dishwasher safe. I love that it's safe and you can lock the panel so children can't turn it on. water for pasta from cold using power boost takes about 90 seconds (obviously depends on the amount of water more water = slower. less water = faster).
By comparison, our previous conventional electric cooktop took about 7-9 minute ballpark for the same amount of water in the same Tefal saucepan.
Gas cooktops in previous rentals took around 4-5 minutes for a similar amount of water in the same saucepan to come to boil.
From what I gather, ones experience with induction is heavily dependant on whether ot not your saucepans are Induction compatible. Our Tefal handleless saucepans (see my other review for details on them) have been Induction ready for years, possibly even design optimised for induction with big thick bases so maybe that helps a lot with getting the power out of induction.
Back to the cooktop..
Power modulation is quick, not quite instantaneous but close enough. Bump it up a few seconds later its there bubbling away, bump it down, moments later the heat is down.
For example, cooking poached eggs is a breeze - boil the water using power boost, drop it to power level 7. poached eggs ready to serve in less than 7 minutes from cold water start.
The slide to cook function using the left side is cool. The power is set to hot close to the front, middle power in the middle and simmer at the back. You just physically place the saucepan to the power level you need at the time. It's hard to really explain but it works well in practise
Individual timers on each of the 5 coils are nice.
Individual "Burner" controls are nice too - our old electric cooktop you had to go into each "burner" one by one to adjust them which was a nuisance when two or more pots on the cooktop. This is just touch and set as needed.
The pause function is nice as it keeps food warm but not cooking which is good when sequencing food ready for serving.
There is a useful residual heat indicator for each coil to let you know if the cooktop is still hot.
And if you put a pot on the cooktop, a light will illuminate to show you which control it is for.
The much else to really comment on - it just works, and is fast and responsive. Not really sure what else is required out of a cooktop anyway. Too early to know on long term reliability but being from a brand under the Electrolux group, I expect many many years. Time will tell but so far so good.

unit rather than the glowing red/ electric, and nothing like solid hotplates. I can control temperatures better than gas and it will slow cook very well. I reheat frozen/ leftovers on this rather than microwave. AND cleaning is so easy- just wipe the flat glass sheet (no knobs). Nothing burns into the surface as it doesnt get hot enough (heat is in pan).
May not be suitable for a large family, as it really only has 3 cooking zones but the wattage of the unit meant I didnt have to rewire an older stove power circuit.
Heats cookware rapidly and is easy to control- simple to use (some can be nightmares to operate).
Very pleased so far, and will be interested to see how long the markings for the controls and plate locations last (or if they rub off).

To have the glass replaced by a service technician will cost $975 + $158 call out fee including 20 minutes of labour + $25 for every 15 minutes after that. It's daylight robbery and such a bad environmental policy. So cost prohibitive. Everything I buy lasts for years. I will never ever buy Bosch again. They're relying on their name. working perfectly again. The printed circle does not indicate the actual heating zone eg, the largest is only 210mm... most makes and models seem to follow this convention though. Touch buttons are frustrating - the smallest amount of water or a lightweight object on the button area makes it beep and turns the whole cooktop off - again maybe they are all like this for safety reasons. Fans can be noisy if you run multiple hotplates or put it on max power. Its my first induction cooktop... coming from gas... these things are fast and give you great control. If you use a large diameter pan it needs to have a very heavy flat base to heat evenly. Be very careful with non stick - high heat kills them, gas was a bit more even/gentle - I've changed to heavy stainless and carbon steel pans.

How is it? Horrible. Constantly changing fan speed when not required. You can empty your pots after finishing cooking, turn rangehood off, put pots back, and it turns fan on again because it's still hot on the cooktop. No steam or fumes anymore, but Westinghouse knows best.

Excellent cooktop – I like this induction cooktop a lot. I chose it to replace a Bosch one with the most awful fiddly controls which I could not tolerate any longer… Read more
after struggling with it for almost a year. I wanted a Miele as I’d had one before, liked it and knew the controls were simple, but the cutout dimension didn’t quite work. So I chose this one instead, and am very pleased with my choice. The beveled edge is most attractive, and having no frame also makes it super easy to clean. Most importantly, the unit is as easy to use as my previous induction tops (excluding the dreadful Bosch). Simple — just switch the unit on (one touch), then select the plate and power level. Even easier, pop a pan on the chosen plate and it highlights that one for me, so I only need to select the heat level. Increase, decrease or turn off individual plates is just one touch. (The Bosch? Don’t ask — multiple touches of a tiny target, grr) I agree with another reviewer the front controls are a bit close to the plates and as you aren’t supposed to put pans on the controls, this is an issue. It won’t recognise a small stainless steel saucepan I have used without issue on another cooktops, amd aim disappointed about that, so it isn’t perfect. But to me these are minor gripes compared to its ease of use and sleek design. Fast, efficient, easily cleaned, attractively styled and so so easy to use. Everything a good induction cooktop should be.
What are induction cooktops and how do they work?
An induction cooktop turns your pan into a cooker itself by using electromagnetism to create heat energy inside the pan instead of applying external heat to it. This cooks your food more quickly, evenly, efficiently and safely when compared to other types of cooktops.
How exactly does this work compared to gas or electric? 'Induction' in the title stands for electromagnetic induction which means electricity is generated using magnetism. Under the stovetop is a magnetic coil that generates a fluctuating magnetic field. When a compatible (ferromagnetic) cooking instrument is nearby, it is heated up via the magnetic field.
In theory, if you were to place your hand on top of an induction stove, you will not feel any heat. (Warning: do not do this after cooking as the stovetop may still be hot from your cooking pan being on top of it).
The other types of cooktops to choose from include gas, electric and a combination of both induction and gas cooktops. These include 2 induction surfaces and 2 gas, enabling you to have the advantages of both.
Pros and cons of induction cooktops
Are you considering an induction cooktop for your kitchen? Here are the main advantages and disadvantages of using this type of cooker.
Induction cooktops are great for those who want to take their cooking seriously - the extremely reactive surface makes cooking much more precise and efficient. However, for many, this costly installation will require buying a whole new host of compatible pots and pans. Induction stovetops are also easily scratched by sliding pans. However, if you take care of them, they can be a valuable addition to your kitchen that can save you in electricity costs in the long run.
It's important to note that if you have a pacemaker (which works by monitoring electrical activity in your heart), it may be safer to choose a non-induction cooktop as it can interfere with your pacemaker. Keeping a safe distance of at least 60cm/2ft is recommended, but remember to consult with your doctor before making your purchasing decision.
Induction cooktop sizes and cooking zones
Extremely versatile, induction cooktops can range from having 1-5 cooking zones depending on your need.
Portable induction cooktops allow you to cook anywhere with an electrical outlet including a dorm room, an RV or at a table to keep your hotpot warm. They can also work as an extra burner for a busy or small kitchen.
In case you want the advantage of an induction cooker without committing to installing one, portable induction cooktops offer a more compact, affordable and easier to use solution than a fitted benchtop induction cooktop.
Induction cooktops that can be fitted into the kitchen typically come in four sizes. 30cm is usually the smallest size and can accommodate two cooking zones. It's suitable for single or couple households.
The most common sizes include 60cm and 90cm. 60cm can hold three heating zones quite comfortably and possibly four, although this might be cramped. 70-75cm can fit four zones very comfortably and 90cm can have up to five zones. This may be useful for large households or recipes that require a lot of multitasking.
Every kitchen and household is different so the size you choose should take into account the space you have available and how many people will be cooking at once.
It's useful to have a choice of large and small cooking zones depending on what you'll be cooking. It's recommended that the large cooking zone has a diameter of 21cm or larger for the most efficient and even heating when using large cookware. Induction cooktops with defined cooking zones will be easier to use than those without.
Features to look for in an induction cooktop
Now that you've decided to make the switch to an efficient induction cooktop, here are some handy things to look out for in your cooktop model:
Safety features
Safety is a very important feature to consider when buying a stovetop unit as many accidents occur when a stovetop is left unattended. Similarly, if you have children running around the house, it's useful to invest in some safety features.
Safety sensor: This feature monitors the temperature at the bottom of the cookware and adjusts the power output automatically to avoid both cookware and cooktop damage through overheating.
Power on light: These lights should be bright and obvious enough to indicate when the stovetop is on so there are no accidents, and an additional 'residual heat' light can inform you of when the cooktop is still hot after use so you do not touch it.
Auto switch-off: When your stove goes unused for long periods, this feature will automatically switch it off, making it safer and more energy-saving than other cooktops.
Timer: For stock-making, steaming and other slow-cooking tasks, having a cooktop with a timerthat shuts the stove off automatically after the desired amount of time could not only save you from accidental fires but is also a convenient feature to have.
Pan detection: With a pan detection feature, there is no need for an on or off switch. Simply placing your pan on the cooktop will activate the heating element and removing it will switch it off so you never forget.
Child lock: For those with toddlers running around, you won't need to worry about them hurting themselves with a child-lock that can be activated and deactivated before and after use.
Ease of use
Above all else, you'll want a cooktop that is easy to navigate and heats your food efficiently. Look for these features to ensure you get the best product:
Power rating and requirements: Most induction cooktops range in power from 1000-2000W, with those on the higher end heating up quicker and being more expensive. Depending on how quickly you'd like your pot of water to boil will depend on what power you require.
Since they use a lot of energy, some models may require special power connections. Check the wattage requirements before purchasing. For reference, an everyday plug has a 10Amp connection whereas induction stovetops may require a 20A, 32A or 42A connection which has to be hard-wired by an electrician.
Controls: You'll want to know how to control your new cooktop, therefore it's useful to take into account the positioning of the controls and how reactive they are - especially if your model comes with touch control. Some models have the controls on the front and others, in different locations but make sure they are not too close to the elements. Touch controls also offer the extra luxury of being very easy to clean.
Automated cooking: Many features automate elements of cooking so you don't have to do much work or pay much attention. An auto-heat up/booster setting will allow you to heat food quickly to a high temperature and then automatically reduce the heat after a set amount of time - without you having to do any of the work. Similarly, you can set a timer to have the stove turn off after 10 minutes so you never over boil pasta again. A keep warm function then allows your food to stay at a constant warm temperature as you and your guests go back to get seconds.
Cost: Induction stovetops tend to range from $60 (portable) to $5000 with those in the higher range offering convenient additional features such as an integrated and quiet cooling fan, a pause button that temporarily locks your heating settings as you clean around it, digital readouts of temperature, a framed vs edgeless design, booster heat up modes and more cooking zones.
