really expensive ones , and decided there wasn't much on the market that was impressive or lasted like old school mowers. Eventually, i decided on on the masport , mostly because it had a guarantee to start in 5 pulls. So its been 6 years, and im so happy with it. It still it starts, mostly within 2 pulls. I only use BP 95 unleaded. Change the oil once a year, and have never had any trouble with this mower. My son in law brought one, and he has had it 2 years, and has had the same experience. I'm really impressed, given the modern world of inbuilt obsolescence.

brought it to service after, this mower hardly pulls alot of fuel, even for 2 lawns to mow, the fuel is hardly touched, I love the big catcher on it, you dont have to empty it that often, maybe twice maximum per lawn, it is so easy to start, especially that its a readystart so no priming required, it starts first pull on full throttle. I once had to mow in the rain and it was just perfect. Another quality is the build quality, its strong, and nothing is plastic, apart from the catcher and engine cover, I do use and abuse this mower when I cut the grass, and it just does excellent, buy one if you find it, you will get great quality out of it.

manouverable and handle twigs. For years I used a 19" Honda push mower, an excellent machine, but it was getting hard to start and took ages to mow the block. I was hoping to find a suitable electric mower, but found it difficult to identify a tough affordable machine. I looked at the professional version of the self-propelled 21" Honda, but it was very heavy. My son suggested I look at the 21" self-propelled Masport Pro Power, which was lighter and seemed capable to do the job. Although I haven't had it long, it is getting plenty of use now spring is here. It's easy to start (one-two pulls), has heaps of power and I only need to use it on the lowest speed. The lawn takes half the time to mow compared with the old Honda. I find it easy on the hands with very little vibration. The catcher is used on the good lawns and the mulching plug under the trees. I find that I need to monitor the amount of grass going into the catcher so as avoid it becoming too full and harder to empty. I am really impressed and pleased with the purchase.

Does not compare well with its granddaddy, but... is okay – I'd had a Masport of nearly identical configuration for 34 years - it had almost died, needed major (uneconomic) maintenance; purchased this one in a… Read more
bit of a rush, sold mostly on 5-year-guarantee. I simply can't see this one lasting 34 years! What's better: (in 34 years) * motor - more powerful, quieter. * blades - unexpectedly robust * wheel bearings and wheel size (but not the wheels) * metal height adjustment (was heavy duty plastic, still worked on the old one) What's worse: * catcher is 'cheap, plastic' instead of heavy-duty plastic and metal; * catcher also blows to both sides - is a disadvantage if you're 'vacuuming' or trying not to spray glass doors * rear cover is same plastic as catcher instead of metal - way too weak * has no hose-connector/hole for simple clean-while-running * wheels - despite having better bearings - are fashion-over-function instead of function-dictates-form, 'mag wheels' design is bound to catch sticks at some point. * chassis is pressed steel and seems 'lighter' than the much thicker pressed aluminium of the old one. What's the same: * height adjustment system * handle and handle folding system (is at least, same level of robust) * base-plate, round, 4 blades (don't get anything else! - these are the least trouble, long-term) I had simply given away my old one to someone who was going to take two old ones and make one good one - and wondered if I'd made a mistake! Other: * it has a mulcher insert of the same too-light plastic, can't see that last 34 years either. * there's an optional side-eject rear flap - simply would not handle heavy-duty volumes of grass, can't see it working without clogging, too small an exit vent. I didn't buy that. Use? It works. It's light enough for my wife to push it around our large suburban block. The motor is powerful enough - a mere 7.4nm torque rating, but! - to cut through 40cm lush grass - shin-deep - with a bit of too-fro allowance and to cut through 20cm dry grass at a walking pace. It's quieter. Summary advice? I actually 'needed' an ICE (internal combustion engine) mower, but for 97% of people with suburban blocks smaller than the traditional 1/4 acre - it's time to go electric. Lawnmowers first, cars second. Electric mowers cost more initially but the running and servicing costs will pay the difference back in 2-3 years and then you'll be ahead for 10-15 years.

you would find around the normal home.
I would give it 5 stars on actual performance cutting grass but I have dropped a star because of the stupid air filter design. The crankcase ventilation and the carburettor inlet are on the inside of the filter, if the filter blocks up the engine starts running on its own oil. If this engine dies I will transplant a Honda motor onto it.
The mower is light and easy to operate. I removed the deflector on the discharge chute and let the grass come out the side at full speed. With the deflector gone it will cut as much as you can push the mower into and it will not clog in wet or dry grass. Knee high grass in this configuration is no problem. The cut can be a bit ordinary if it is fully raised but at normal grass mowing heights the mower does a good job.
Make sure all your knobs are tight on the handles as there sometimes can be a bit of vibration as the deck is pressed steel.

better. Talked into the Masport 550 as I don't have a big lawn. Had a Masport before that was excellent therefore I didn't take much convincing. Ran well for a few months and then, after about the 10th time using, became harder and harder to cold start. In the end it took over 20 pulls to start. Took it in for a service and found that the spark plug had oiled up. This simply shouldn't happen after such a short time. The whole build quality is way down on my previous Masport and I believe, like most other companies these days, it's not about building a quality product but about cost cutting and scrimping any way possible. This is the last Masport product for me.

Early review of Masport Cleveland 18” 460mm six blade hand push reel [cylinder] mower: This heavy, solidly built, six blade reel mower… Read more
when well tuned is an excellent, quiet and smooth running grass cutting machine fit to cut any size couch or buffalo lawn in any reasonable condition. It is best purchased by those who are willing and able to assemble it, adjust it, maintain it, lift it and push it.
I purchased it new as a “special order” from Bunnings at a $20 discount with my Powerpass card. I was tiring of my old heavily modified 5 blade Victa razorcut [handle cushion replacement, proper strong handle screws, rubber tyre treads, refabricated centre attached hubcaps, constant restraightening of the soft metal blades and especially especially the plastic pinion gears which I was constantly having to reshape with a file due to quick wear by the metal pawls and remake the metal pawls to size.]
On the Cleveland’s box it mostly accurately states: “ Built strong and tough to last. This handmower will continue to perform year after year because it is built with quality materials that are just better. · Solid rubber tyres for superior traction · Aluminium wheels with steel drive pinions and pawls · Lightweight and durable fabric catcher · Adjustable height adjustment · Heavy duty bottom blade and cylinder”
The Cleveland’s 17 kg came packed in its box with instructions to be assembled. As per previous reviews the instructions are poor, so I largely ignored them. The chunky t-handle assembly starts with the insertion of the lower parts through their guides in the frame. Guide slots hopefully will prevent the annoying occasional handle detachments I have experienced with all my other lighter push reel mowers. The handle bolts must be very tight to avoid twisting. I figured out the grass catcher and catcher hook assembly just to get it out of the way as I usually do not use a catcher. Though I tried it and rediscovered why I do not like these partly functional devices on this style of reel mower. Later I took the flimsy catcher hooks off their sites at the ends of the roller because they bent and were in the way.
The Cleveland has two modes [ie “adjustable height adjustment”] of cut height adjustment, both of which are a bit fiddly and slow in comparison to other solutions. This is necessitated I think by the heaviness of the machine. The roller height is changed by using the rather large black plastic handled screws on either side. [ My beloved but now unavailable 5 blade AL-KO 38HM uses a spring loaded quick pull out - push in mechanism.] Nevertheless roller adjustment is the easier of the two methods. Roller height change is the only way any of my other machines’ cutting heights adjust. The other way requires a 13 mm spanner to first loosen the wheel axle nuts on either side of the frame and then use the lever /pin in hole mechanism on each side of the frame to move each axle along a curved slot on each side of the frame. Then the axle nuts must be retightened. Care must be taken to ensure the two wheel axles are properly centred on the frame sides before tightening so the rubber tyre does not rub on the frame. [All the other reel push mowers I have use a single axle joining the two wheels across the frame.] I discovered this rubbing problem on one wheel in the process of adjusting the cutting height by this method and wondering why the wheel made a noise and was an bit stiff afterward.
I was cutting the retired aged pensioner wheely walker dependent neighbour’s quarter acre block with a mix of overgrown couch, buffalo and fallen bamboo leaves. His ride on mower had belt issues which cost him as much as my new Masport to fix and which he could could not afford. This mow job required multiple height readjustments to my new machine and a few passes to accomplish. The Cleveland will not cut high grass on a low cut height setting. As with all manual reel mowers, blade jamming with grass clumps and twig debris requires a quick reverse of the reel with the shoe to unclog and continue. Investigating the wheel noise friction issue, I removed the small and out of harms way plastic hubcap from the solid aluminium wheel. [...as opposed to the dysfunctional and too easily caught large plastic caps on the Victa Razorcut’s slippery easily worn plastic composite wheels] With a small flat blade screw driver I removed the chunky c-clip securing the wheel to its axle. Inside I found the well greased steel pinion gear, itself secured with a circlip to the cutting blade axle. It was not going any where, but this I noted would have to be removed probably with the aide of circlip pliers for future reverse spin lapping paste sharpening of the blades. There was a bit of small grass debris in the mechansim which I did not think was interfering. But the wheel axle I found to be off centre to the frame and thus the rubbing necessitating the 13mm wrench again to fix. I secured the wheel carefully using my pliers to ensure the c-clip was well bedded into its groove in the wheel axle, then popped the hubcap back onto the wheel. I have not adjusted the reel to blade knife height yet as it came perfectly tuned from the factory.
The nature of the design of this type of reel mower means one cannot get close to a wall or fence edge, so would require another machine such as long handled shears, etc.
This is the most quiet, smoothest manual reel mower I have used including the “ no touch” AL-KO 38HM, the Victa 16 in Razor Cut, the Flymo H40 and the Bosch AHM38. It is heavy to lift but remarkably easy to push on relatively level ground. Used properly it is up to the task of mowing any couch or buffalo lawn of any size. Very satisfying.

before you start up. The only downside is it's very heavy, unless you're fit, I'd stay away from this mower, by the time I finished mowing my lawn, I felt like I just did a full upper body workout. on first use, Put the mulching plug in,this is where.the expectation dropped Mulching is very bad as it doesn't disperse the clippings as my Honda does. As you.mow,it leaves a trail of clippings beside where you have just cut It shouldn't do that, which means.you need to go back over the same line of cut to.try and get rid of the grass..The job takes longer.than what it should..
