Pro's Asus continuously update the firmware so if there's a bug it soon gets fixed. -8 LAN ports: ideal for anyone with more than 4 ethernet devices -Wifi 6 (AX) connectivity -Exceptional range: We can see the router 72 metres away at a friends place going through multiple walls and 2 other houses -Surprisingly fast wifi 5 speeds close to the router i.e. >350 Mb/s Chromecast/Google streamer -Reasonable speeds when a further away e.g. ~60 Mb/s on Wifi 5 ~20 m away, at the far end of a garage at the far end of the property, going through brick walls, tin roof, filing cabinets, etc... -Lots of features e.g. Mesh & ability to pass through multiple IP addresses (we run 2 VOIP lines Optus & Vonex) -Rock solid reliability: Zero crashes. No need to regularly reboot. -Good longevity (never had a router fail) -Works straight out of the box -Passing through IP addresses is fairly easy -Advanced settings are fairly easy to find, use and access -User friendly graphical interface
Con's -Wifi 6 (Wifi 7 would be nice) -1 Gb/s ethernet: If you have Gigabit internet or move data around at high speeds this may be too slow
Bought this router for $350 (1 year old)... it was $516 new. Overall a great purchase

ASUS RT-AC88U
- Price (RRP) $379
- Frequency BandDual-Band (2.4GHz, 5.0GHz)

Faulty WiFi, unusable – Easy to set up and use, with decent range for 2.4Ghz and good WiFi speed. But after a few months the WiFi began to suffer errors where it would be… Read more
"connected" but without internet. Wired devices on the same router would continue to work fine. Power cycling the router would see it working fine again for a couple of days. This irregular operation behavior worsened over time and eventually meant that I had problems even trying to use connected devices through Google Home like Spotify connect. After much frustration, I replaced the Asus with a decent Netgear RAX200 and it's been flawless. On the basis of this experience, I could not recommend this device to anyone.

basic router supplied by IP does not cut it. The Asus seemed to be low cost for smaller home, and packed with features, free firmware update+trend security for life of router+more. Easy setup(though I did need a little help from Asus Support, very good). Concurrent use of 2.4Ghz+5Ghz. 5Ghz for TV+Tablets achieving 105Mbs consistency, and 75Mbs at 30m outside. 2.4Ghz good for mobie phones, printer, Google home, smart lights etc. Using for 6 weeks solid performance. Note: If updating firmware on WiFi, place your device close to the router, as specified in Setup. Very happy with purchase from Amazon and support from Asus.
ASUS RT-AC86U
- Price (RRP) $279
- Frequency BandDual-Band (2.4GHz, 5.0GHz)

Works well but its approach to network management could be better – On the upside the RT-AC86U does offer decent performance and its not too hard to set up, mostly. Where it falls down for me and my family is its… Read more
approach to network management. Finding devices on a network is not well configured, so identifying specific devices, is hit and miss. Its counter intuitive interface for parental control time management is going to confuse a lot of people (it did us initially as it asks you to specify hours "not on line" as opposed to hours spent on line) and is not as a consequence easy to set up. It consistently dropped the ball when it came to daylight saving too.
All in all an OK device from our point of view that would have made more sense had it been better at network monitoring and taken a straightforward approach to parental controls.

trend security features and a MESH pair for better coverage, but boy... They simply do not work out of the box, nor after five frustrating hours of firmware updates, factory resets, mesh pairing, reconfiguring... I could not get ANY of the Wifi channels stable, and xbox plugged directly into the mesh unit couldn't get an IP address nor connect to wifi.. several devices were refused connection for "wrong password" when it wasn't, despite trying all the legacy WPA2 connection methods.
In the end I've given up, the firmware is clearly a mess, and the units to put it plainly are not fit for purpose and are going back to the shop for a refund.
I'm a 30 years long IT pro, used to setting these things up for other people, so you can bet I was up until I was so frustrated I could hardly speak... this will keep me awake tonight!
ASUS RT-AX58U

for two main reasons: the incredible number of LAN ports (it has 10 in total, including 2.5G and 10G options, which is way more than the standard 4) and the fact that it’s future-proof with WiFi 7.
This router was incredibly easy to set up. The ASUS Router app had a simple, step-by-step process that got me connected in less than 15 minutes.
The performance has been flawless. I haven't experienced a single disconnect to date, and the stability is rock-solid, even with dozens of devices connected. I'm extremely happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful, reliable router that will last for years.

across the home and was pleased to see the Asus Expert Wifi EBM68 mesh system, consisting two AX7800 triband Wifi units, on sale at PLE Computers post Christmas 2024 for $599 (the single unit sale price was $299). Whilst it is marketed for small business use, it is also suitable for home use. The routers use Wifi6 technology. Whilst not the more recent Wifi7, I felt it was a good time to get Wifi6, as it is less expensive now, yet a big step up from the older Wifi5 system I had been using.
Set-up: It is easy to set up the Asus mesh wifi systems out of the box. The trick is to have both routers plugged in and on with a solid blue light before attempting to setup the home network. The main unit should be connected to the modem The second unit should be about 1 meter away from the main unit. The main unit is clearly labeled with a sticker across the front with QR codes for easy download of the Asus Wifi Expert app from the App store or google play store, depending on your device. It was straightforward to access and set up the main unit using the supplied login details and app. You are prompted to update firmware of the main unit when you do this. I suspect this resulted in delay in connection of the second as a mesh node unit. That said, I went for a 20 minute walk and when I came back it was connected as a mesh node. I then updated the firmware of the second unit using the expert app.
Use: Signal strength is strong throughout our home now, without drop off at the edges as there was previously. I have good connection in much of the yard too. Speeds hold up throughout as well.
Having smart wiring in our home I have wired backhaul connection between the units, though this is not necessary to achieve the same speeds.
No more Wifi drop outs around here and no complaints for me, or from any other family members, who are quick to announce when internet connectivity is interrupted! :-)

Reliable, well designed, but App install is a hit/miss – Context: using as wifi mesh wired/ethernet backhaul for a single storey long narrow home (10x30m). Pros: - nice design: black, elegant,… Read more
minimalistic, great finish all around. - functions well: we've had great fast coverage all around the home, reliable and no drops as of yet (been using it for 3 weeks now). Designers did a great job packing the antennas into this small, elegant cube. - fast set-up when using wired backhaul using website asusrouter.com - each node has WAN and a WAN/LAN inputs, which means any can act as a main router and the other 2 will act as the nodes - Can be connected by wired/ethernet backhaul (much faster than wireless backhaul connection) - doesn't overheat, safe to touch when used extensively, kid-friendly - Customer service surprisingly very good, very responsible, very knowledgeable with very little wait times
Cons - horrible experience setting up using the App (even over wired backhaul). Just don't use the App and use the website to setup. - pricey if you're paying full price. I would wait for a sale (got mine price matched with Amazon Aus by JB HiFi) - feels light (mostly plastic construction), could potentially break if drops from a shelf - each router/node requires a powerpoint connection. Powerpoint connection a little bulky, and may not squeeze behind cabinets etc, so your furniture may need to stick out more
Overall, great design and great reliable coverage. The App install is a hit and miss, I recommend using the website to install. I'd recommend to a friend if its on sale.

Constant dhcp generic errors, you do something like use the url filter, firewall or modify the qos settings and the router will just crap the bed and refuse to handshake or connect with the internet. Try setting up a schedule, yep you bet craos the bed again Try putting in a guest network, nope doesnt like it, oh but the trend micro option to sell off your private internet traffic function works of course . Ive persisted with this utter piece of crap for the last time, ive ordered a TPLINK with better features for a cheaoer price and tomorrow, oh i cant wait, im gunna smash this thing to bits with a massive sledgehammer. I will never willingly buy crao asus products again.

it looks like it's still working, nothing shows up in the logs but it just won't connect to any devices in the house. Sometimes it keeps the connection to some devices but drops others. This happens multiple times a day. No amount of troubleshooting has been able to isolate the problem, let alone fix it, except I found out many other Asus users also have this issue and nobody has any idea what's causing it, except for suspected terrible firmware. Asus support seems to have no idea either. At least now I know why it was so heavily discounted (50%) when I purchased it.
Beware: If you commit the sin of forgetting your Asus account login password (not for the router settings page, but for the inevitable app that you need to download for any kind of electronic product nowadays), the router locks you out. There is nothing to do but factory reset the whole device and start again from scratch. A password recovery email or backup security questions would be extremely helpful here! But nothing like that exists for the Asus router. In short, this unit is going to the recycling centre and I'm buying something else, anything but Asus. Do not make the same mistake I did: stay away from Asus.
Update, I've settled on a single AX11000 (eight antenna) unit, and this has remained more or less… Read more
