and took a little longer to dry, still not a big issue. I could see when the sun hit the tiles, they were streaky and as a result didn't look that clean. Within the first month the water tank had cracked and I had to buy a new one $25. This lasted maybe 2 months and had to replace again. All I did was put water in it and one of the descaling sachets in it. Then the screw top on top of the water tank started leaking and the water would pool around the bottom of the steamer. No replacement parts were available for months. In the end I bought a cheaper $120 Black & Decker steam mop and have had no issues. Lucky I can use the pads from the Haan steam mop.

and a dog, our floors get messy quickly, especially with crumbs, dirt and hair on both our timber floors and tiles.
What I like most is that it vacuums and mops at the same time, so there’s no need to bring out a separate mop and bucket. It saves a lot of time when doing a quick clean of the kitchen or living areas.
The lay-flat HyperStretch design is really useful as well. It can slide under furniture and our bathroom vanity quite easily, which means I don’t need to move things around just to clean underneath.
The anti-tangle roller does a great job picking up long hair and pet hair without it wrapping around the brush. After cleaning, the self-cleaning feature is also very convenient — just press a button and it cleans the roller so it’s ready for the next use.
Overall it’s been a really practical cleaner for busy households and makes everyday floor cleaning much quicker.

Mayhem, keeping my floors clean has always been a challenge. The Tineco Floor One S9 Artist Steam has genuinely been a life changer in our home. Dog hair, muddy paw prints, food spills, and everyday messes are now so much quicker and easier to clean.
The HyperSteam Technology easily cuts through sticky messes and grime without harsh chemicals, which gives me peace of mind with both pets and a toddler. I also love the HyperStretch Technology, as the slim, lay flat design makes it easy to clean under furniture where dog hair usually builds up. The triple sided edge cleaning is great for getting right into corners and along skirting boards.
Overall, this has been a complete life changer in our home. It’s made cleaning up after dogs and a toddler at least 10x easier, saving me time and effort every single day. I genuinely don’t know how I managed without it

As it was intermittent it was about another 3 weeks before the pads stopped spinning and the steam randomly stopped. Luckily I managed to get it on video. I sent the video to which they responded they would replace the mop IF I sent a photo of the mop with the cord cut. I have three dogs and a very large area that needs mopping, it could take a couple of weeks before I received a new mop so I advised them I would send them a picture of the cord cut once I had received my new mop. They refused. Bearing in mind this is a two month old mop which I first reported issues with only a month after purchase this is ridiculous. I have contacted ACCC who will hopefully get a better result than I did.

happy. Currently it seems to cost $300, which is a great value IMHO.
The tray was falling out because the lock was not sitting deep enough to work. The mop was replaced by warranty with one that had exactly the same falling out tray. It feels absurd to read the Dyson replies below - on one hand, they have an engineering team that created a pretty decent product, and on the other hand 2 years later they write meaningless replies to the people who complain about that tray instead of just rectifying a basic design defect. The mindless corporate machine at its finest. Btw, the lock can be easily fixed by heating it up with a plastic welder or construction fan and bending outwards.
Otherwise, the mop is easy to move around, cleans well, does not leave much water and, even though it does not have suction, picks up debris from the floor if there isn't too much. Contrary to what they write in the manual, you do have to clean and dry the brushes immediately after each wash. If left inside, they get stinky within hours.
The base of the mop is not great. It does not support the weight of the appliance well, so replacing the brushes and the tray is not a straightforward exercise.

Did ok on the gloss finish flat rubber. Found to get stubborn dirt off, need to pass over more than once, but that stands to reason as this is a machine made to be "gentle" on surfaces. The design is sleek and modern, making it easy to maneuver around furniture, and it glides across the floor smoothly with ease. It heats up quickly, and within seconds, it is ready to use. The steam power is amazing and I even can control the amount of steam. The VX89 sanitizes my floors without the need for harsh chemicals, which is not only better for the environment, but also for the health of my family and pets. However I always use my Microfiber Flat Mop to wipe the residual water of the hard floor in order to absorb the little moisture and fluff which are left behind by the steam cleaner. It also aloes to walk on the floor right away. The mop pads are easy to attach and remove, and the fact that they are machine washable saves me money in the long run. The water tank is large enough ( 330ml ) to cover a good amount of space, and I appreciate that it produces constant steam throughout the cleaning process, making my floors gleaming clean. Overall, I would recommend this steam mop to anyone in the market for a reliable and effective cleaning tool. Surprisingly it a comes with several attachments such as Carpet glider, Concentration nozzle and Cooling tray. Unfortunately it does not come with measuring cup to refill the water tank. I hope the unit will last longer than my Kmart Steam Mop which was a terrible disappointment.

How do steam mops work?
A steam mop, also known as a floor steam cleaner, is a home cleaning appliance that uses steam to mop hard surfaces such as sealed hard floors, ceramic tiles, linoleum, stone and marble.
After you fill up the in-built water tank inside the unit, you press a button to start the heating process, and water is heated up using an in-built heating element. When the mop’s ready to be used, the appliance will indicate this to you, for example through a green light.
The steam is then conveyed through the appliance to the cleaning head. It makes contact with the floor through a porous cleaning pad.
The application of hot steam loosens dirt and caked-in grime on the floor, which transfers to the mop pad.
What is the difference between a steam mop and a steam cleaner?
While a steam mop is specifically designed to clean hard floors, a steam cleaner has a multi-surface purpose. Depending on the product, you can use it to clean a variety of surfaces - including hard floors, carpets, upholstery, and sometimes showers and the outside of cars.
Steam cleaners also use hotter water than steam mops, producing hotter steam to kill firm-rooted bacteria in carpet fibres and shower tiles.
Is steam mopping better than regular mopping?
People who are loyal to the process of steam mopping prefer both the effectiveness and convenience of using a steam mop, compared to a regular mop. Here are some reasons why:
Hot steam has been scientifically proven to effectively kill bacteria and dust mites, more than the luke-warm water you’d use while mopping.
The effectiveness of steam also eliminates the need to use any cleaning solutions with chemicals in them, which can be hazardous to health and also represent an additional cost.
You won’t need to lug around a sopping-wet mop and bucket with you. Once you fill up the water tank, everything you need to clean with is contained within the unit. It's a time saver, as you won’t be stopping to wring out the dirty water and re-wet the mop.
Being used on these floor types: unsealed timber, waxed timber and cork tiles. With these unsealed surfaces, steam can slink into gaps or under the floorboards, which causes the panels or tiles to expand.
Mopping large spills or heavy stains, and these will require individual attention to remove first, before using a steam mop
Tasks that vacuum cleaners would normally perform, like picking up dirt and debris. This is because a steam mop has no suction function. Make sure to vacuum your space before steam-mopping it, otherwise you could have lots of stray wet hairs and bits of dirt decorating your floors afterwards.
If you don’t want to wait around for a steam mop to heat up, or bother with ensuring a cord is long enough as you move between different areas of the house, a traditional mop and bucket may actually be easier for you.
Cordless operation, as while there are currently cordless hard floor cleaners, there aren’t any battery-operated or cordless steam mops.
Hard Floor Cleaners
These look similar to upright vacuums, but do more than suction dirt and debris. Functions include vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing and drying hard floors.
The surfaces suitable for hard floor cleaning are the same as those safe to be cleaned by steam mops. Again, avoid unsealed surfaces.
These are usually more expensive than steam mops because of the wide variety of functions they offer for hard floors, from around $100-$500.
For example, the popular Karcher Hard Floor Cleaner, the FC 5 Corded Jarder Floor Cleaner, can vacuum and mop hard floors in one step, making it slightly pricier than entry-level models, at $399.
Hard floor cleaners, as their name suggests, will also work on hard floors - but just like steam mops, the floors should be sealed to avoid steam warping the flooring.
Factors to consider before buying a steam mop
Ease of Use
The convenience of using a steam mop will only be enjoyed if your appliance is easy to use. Keeping an eye out for the following can help reduce the total time you spend cleaning:
- Heat-up time: All steam mops take some time to heat the water inside the tank. 15 seconds is considered a quick heat-up time, will other, slower appliances can take around 5 minutes.
- Running time: How long your steam mop can stay powered until its next water refill depends largely on the size of your water tank.
- On-the-go water refills: Steam mops designed with a water boiler require you to turn the appliance off, or wait for it to cool down before you can refill the boiler. This is a safety measure so the steam doesn’t scald you. But if you’re in it to win back some time, choose a steam mop with a water tanked that can be opened and refilled at any point.
- Cord length: Opting for a longer cord will make it easier to steam mop a larger surface area without having to continuously unplug the cord and re-plug it into a socket that’s closer to the area you’re currently mopping.
Water Tank Capacity
This is one of the single most important factors contributing to the effective performance of your steam mop.
The more millilitres a water tank can house, the longer a steam mop can clean before requiring a refill. An average sized water tank is around 500mL.
Large water tanks
However, larger water tanks (600mL or over) are more convenient for larger households, or if your house has a lot of hard-floor surface area to be cleaner.
A larger water tank is also likely to produce hotter, drier steam, which means less water left on tiles or floorboards afterwards - and a shorter drying time.
Keep in mind that a heavier water tank will result in a heavier appliance to cart around as you clean. If you have back issues or can’t strain in this way, a smaller water tank may be more time-intensive but safer for you.
Small water tanks
While a smaller water tank (around 300mL) is theoretically suitable for apartments or smaller spaces, most models are cheaper, and built with lightweight materials that are less durable.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Water tank
Using distilled water instead of tap water can keep your water tank in better condition, as hard mineral deposits are less likely to build up. These deposits can then transfer down into the nozzle near the mop head, which will cause steam to be blocked from escaping properly.
Cleaning pads
Microfibre cloths are the best at trapping dirt and grime, and they’re also easy to wash. You’ll need around 2-3 per mopping session, since the pads pick up grime and become grey quickly, so require changing to avoid spreading around wet dirt.
Look for a steam mop that provides at least 2 pads with your steam mop purchase. Some models are also sold with pads made from different materials. They can range from soft and gentle to more abrasive material (for scrubbing), making them suitable for cleaning a variety of floor surfaces.
Price
On average, most steam mops cost around $150. You can snag a cheap model starting at $50, or if you prefer to splash out, you’re looking at around $500 or over.
The price will depend on a number of factors, such as the build quality, size of the water tank, brand name and reputation, and the number of included features and accessories.
Common steam mop accessories
- Handheld function: A detachable handheld cleaner is part of the steam mop, and can pop out to function separately. This can be useful for spot cleaning or quick cleaning.
- Lock switch: allows continuous steam to be released, without you having to constantly press down a trigger nozzle.
- Swivel head: an oldie but a goodie, allowing you to easily get under furniture and around nooks and crannies. A more angular mop head (such as a triangular mop head) will also help with cleaning edges and corners.
- Carpet glider: allows you to steam mop carpets. Since the steam mop is still not purpose built for cleaning carpets, it works better with removing light soiling.
- Window cleaner: some steam mops have a handy attachment that lets you steam the windows, while the cleaning mood has taken hold.
- Brushes and jet nozzles: allow precision steam cleaning of specific areas; typically with smaller surface areas. This includes cleaning in-between shower tiles, or cleaning the oven.
- Adjustable telescopic head: refers to the height of the mop stick. If you or family members are tall, the mop head should become high enough for you to mop comfortably, without hurting your back and making you lean down the whole time.
Wrapping up
Finding the right steam mop involves weighing up three main things: price, the size of your space, and how often you mop. Larger spaces will benefit from a larger water tank - however this makes for a pricier steam mop, and also makes it heavier to cart around. If you mop frequently, consider spending a little bit more on additional features that will save you time, like a longer cord that lets you mop more of the house in one go.
