Maton Guitars
Great for high rise living (and back problems!) – I have had my EMBW-6 Mini Maton (that's a blackwood model with the pro pickup) for over a year. I had heard it at a wedding and was so impressed.… Read more
Back problems were giving me issues with my full size Maton, and living in a high-rise apartment I wanted something I could play full tempo without annoying the neighbours. At first I was a bit disappointed and it stayed in the cupboard for 6 months, till I played it on an acoustic rather than electric amp (doh!), then I fell in love with it. It just came alive ( and of course the AP5-Pro pick up in the blackwood models is a big part of that). With the pick up set as recommended by Maton, and the amp on flat with a bit of reverb it is beautiful in highs mids and lovely resonant bass. So you have plenty of scope to play with the equalization. The build is solid and the case is bullet proof. The back is happy, the neighbours are happy, and I would buy exactly the same again if I had the time over. Stretch your finances to the blackwood models if you can.
vintage cw 80 – i was lucky to find my cw 80 built in 1980, and it is truly amazing.it was under a guys bed for ten years and he put it up for sale, even with old… Read more
rusty strings it had a tone,i have had a refret and use galli lucky star strings, the tone is wide and clear and the dynamic range is huge as it responds to the lightest touch and gets louder as it gets played harder, but still keeps its clarity, most guitars have a limit to the volume but this one gets really loud, the projection is exellent. i really do like the vintage matons, they age so well and are solid,i have never seen one crack or split.and some can be one of a kind for sound and tone, well worth paying top dollar for a good old maton. and as my luthier says'if its still straight after 40 years its not going to warp ;its a great guitar to take to jams and porch parties and of course everyone wants to buy it,its not for sale..
No regrets – I bought a Maton ecw80c and had no regrets. The sound was sharp, neat, and vibrant which impressed me greatly. I couldn't leave it anyplace because it appears to be scratched easily. I'll be buying the acoustic 916 soon.
Absolutely beautiful guitar – After playing a "Hondo" guitar my mum gave me for 40 years ago I finally decided to upgrade to a more expensive guitar. I chose a Maton because my… Read more
friend has one and he loves it, also the lower end Maton's are in my price budget. I chose the S60 because basically it was the only Maton the music shop I went to had and I liked the sound and it's feel. I've owned it for nearly 2 years now and I would highly recommend anyone upgrading to a medium level guitar to buy the S60. The quality, sound and feel is amazing and well worth the $1400.
My little musical friend – The Maton Electric Bluegrass 808L is a purchase I made more than 20 years ago. It has survived thousands of performances including sweltering… Read more
Australian heat, pouring English rain and a guy that initially used it as a rhythm guitar to smash out some grungey rock. On 2 separate occassions I forgot to add a humidifier and loosen strings on international flights. The bridge has slighlty liftedd as one would imagine. The resilience of the Maton EBG 808L is matched only by its craftsmanship and epic tonal quality. Boasting an AP5 Pro pickup this is a magnificent performing guitar and an excellent studio player for all levels of musicianship.
Amazing all rounder – I’ve been playing for 30+ years and this is the nicest all round guitar I’ve EVER played, beats all the famous branded USA made guitars I have had… Read more
(and in some cases still have). Great set up out of the box, beautiful action, split coils open up a huge range of sounds from twangy to dirty metal. The case is next level, leaves every other factory supplied case for dead. On the downside I struggled to fall in love with the factory strings, found them a little hard to bend but they did have a really nice feel under my fingers. As mentioned by someone else the pick up selector is the reverse of what is considered ‘normal’ but it’s easy enough to live with. Since buying this beauty around 6 months ago my other guitars have not left their cases.
Maton JB4
Maton JB4 no. 1152 – I was lucky enough to get a gig as bass player after many years on guitar. Took my time and checked out many basses. Settled on the JB4 with flat… Read more
wound strings. Dimarzio PJ pickups. Beautifully made at the Maton factory. It feels good every time I pick it up to play and I'm very happy with my sound. Thanks Maton for putting a lot of thought into this bass.
Superlative Quality Finish and timbers – This is a vaaaaassssst improvement on the old FG150 I bought in circa 1964. However, although it is a real showpiece to behold, it has a couple of… Read more
problems: 1. The bridge has very sharp edges and corners such that I have to watch my pinky when strumming and picking. When I first started using it my right hand little finger finger needed a little band aid protection after getting damaged by the bottom front corner of the bridge. Maton can fix this by a bit of chamfering around the perimeter of the bridge. 2. I am not completely happy with the sound of it. I have a Taylor LKSM whose sound blows the poor little Maton away. I haven't played the Messiah all that much but I have had the LKSM since September 2002 and played it at many gigs since. I think that the Maton needs considerably more playing in.
I have restrung the Messiah twice since I got it using Thomastik Plectrum and Spectrum strings. The Thomastiks have a softer tone than the Elixrs that I use on the Taylor. The next restring will be with the original Elixr Nanoweb lights.
The Messiah is a truly beautiful instrument but I wonder if a Jumbo configuration would give it a beefier sound.
