Oakley Isn’t What It Used to Be — Product Quality and Support Have Both Declined I’ve been an Oakley customer for many years and have owned multiple… Read more
Oakley prescription frames and sunglasses since around 2010. What originally made me loyal to the brand was the combination of comfort, durability, sporty design, and the feeling that Oakley products were genuinely built to last.
Unfortunately, this recent experience has left me feeling that both the product quality and after-sales support have declined significantly compared to what the brand used to represent years ago.
My Oakley Metalink prescription frame developed cracking on the temple arms after around two years of careful normal daily use. The issue itself was isolated only to the temples — the expensive prescription lenses and the rest of the frame remained in excellent condition. I was not even insisting on a free replacement; I was more than willing to purchase genuine replacement parts if they were available.
What disappointed me most was discovering how little practical support existed once an issue actually occurred.
I first contacted Oakley Customer Care and was referred to OPSM because the glasses had been purchased there. I then contacted OPSM Customer Care and provided detailed information, photos, and the full background of the issue. Unfortunately, most of the responses I received were generic copy-pasted policy templates that did not meaningfully address the actual situation or provide any practical solution. For something called “Customer Care,” the experience felt surprisingly impersonal and procedural.
Meanwhile, Oakley advised that replacement temples were unavailable through their channels, while OPSM suggested I check with Oakley for spare parts. In other words, the customer was effectively left stuck between disconnected support systems with no clear repair pathway.
To be fair, the local OPSM store manager I eventually dealt with was polite, professional, and genuinely attempted to help within the limitations of the system. My criticism is not directed toward individual staff members. The issue is the broader support infrastructure itself.
What surprised me most is that: • the Metalink frame is still a current model, • the temple arms are mechanically detachable using screws, • yet there appears to be no genuine spare-parts pathway available through Oakley in Australia.
This contrasts sharply with my older Oakley frames. I still own two older AirDrop MNP frames purchased years ago, and despite heavy long-term use, both remain structurally solid on their original components to this day. That long-term durability was exactly what made me trust the Oakley brand in the first place.
For a premium brand, I expected at least one of the following: • access to genuine replacement parts, • a proper repair ecosystem, • coordinated support between Oakley and OPSM, • or some form of reasonable goodwill assistance given the issue occurred within warranty, and I have identified only marginally outside warranty.
Instead, the overall ownership experience felt highly fragmented and surprisingly disposable for a brand that continues to market itself as premium.
I still appreciate Oakley’s product design and styling, but this experience has significantly changed my perception of the brand’s quality consistency and long-term ownership experience compared to the Oakley many customers came to trust years ago.

The issue is the nose pad. After about 8 months of use the nose pad started falling off on a regular basis, until I lost it while hiking a few months later.
Didn't think to claim warranty and simply when looking for a replacement one. Oakley Stockists didn't have it and would offer replacements that did not suit the glasses.
Have since contacted Oakley Australia who have advised that they don't offer the Unobtanium NosePad as a Spare/Replacement Part.
Turns out it is Unobtainable.
