Rotel RCD-06SE Review – Well I already owned a rotel amp so the built quality of the RCD-06SE was no suprise. Solid construction, heavy & simply design. Of course it… Read more

employes the WM8740 DAC chip from Wolfson which replaces the Burr Brown DAC chip (I still a big Burr Brown fan). I hooked it up to a Rotel RA04SE, B&W DM602 speakers with chord interconnects & got straight to business. The first impressions where #+%*@, What have I done. I had already sold my arcam player so there was no going back now! I was dissapointed and regretted my purchases. I hoped that it would break in and sound better as time goes by but in the back of my head I knew I had stuffed up but didn't want to admit it to my self. I had read the what hifi review and thought they where being generous with there poor review (they have been wrong before) I started leaving this player on repeat all day to try and break it in. Fast forward 3 weeks from then and everything has changed. This really is a CD player that is very average out if the box, it needs time to run in and settle down. The RCD-06SE is excellent at being able to let you sit back and enjoy the music rather then picking at it which is exactly why I sold my Arcam CD73, I just couldn't sit back and enjoy it. After a good 15 hours of run in it becomes gentle, engaging and displayed what it's made of. Bass is very well controlled, mids and highs are detailed with well rounded vocals. It is everything that's it's not straight away out of the box. But as I said the best thing about it is it just lets you enjoy the music with out becoming tired. I can have it on all day without the need to turn it off because I have had enough. The RCD06SE for me is very similar to a Arcam Cd73 BUT it's enjoyable and that's what it comes down to. Detailed well rounded sound, Built quality unheard of at this price. Poor out of the box experience, needs time to shine
