up and the drive was fine, the board was gone so I can still access the data which makes the obligatory 3 separate backups for critical data. This system is almost bomb proof.

erased. Shutting down the computer & unplugging all cables then restarting didn't achieve anything, ran disc first aid on it with no errors reported. Will be returning to the store & buying a SSD but definitely staying away from Seagate, this isnt the first time ive had a seagate hard drive fail, all the data gone.
Faster than I expected for a HDD – I needed a portable external hard drive to do a Windows system image back up. The previous year I changed the old internal HDD 900GB to SSD 2TB and I… Read more
thought it was overdue for a backup. I had 1.2TB to back up. First looked at an SSD but was 3 times the price of a HDD. So I settled on a Seagate One Touch 4TB in Space Grey colour.
The trap for young players is that it is formatted in exFat. Windows will only to system image back up if the drive is NTFS so I quickly copied the small amount of files on the new HDD and proceed to do a quick disk format in NTFS.
My estimates was the write speed sat around the 125Mbp/s mark, which was comparable to a big old 3.5" Seagate Desktop External HDD I had. My old laptop HDD which is now in a portable enclosure only manages about 112Mbp/s so was a noticeable improvement. Took about 3 hours to back up 1.2TB off the internal SSD.
I did do a speed test with a small 250GB external SSD which clocked 280Mbp/s. I'm not doing full image backups and restores everyday so I will stick with this HDD solution for a few years yet.
Terrible product and they don't bother to replace items under warranty – I have gone through 3 of these external hard drives in the last 2-3 years. At first they worked well but the last two have died within the warranty… Read more
period. First one I managed to save the data myself 2nd one I sent to them to repair it. I waited a month to be told my data is not saveable and if it was still under warranty the would send me a replacement. Never received a replacement despite having conversations with the customer service team before sending it off that it was under warranty still and they would send me a new one. I will never purchase seagate products again.
Terrible Charger – The charger port is unique, trying to be different doesnt work if the quality is poor. Do not waste your money on this low quality harddrive from hell. Buy if you love to lose your files.

09/08/25. After backing up roughly 8TB of data including important documents and client work, on the 15/08/25 (a week of owning) the unit failed and I was unable to access my data and files on the brand new drive. After going through their support process, which involved hours of troubleshooting and eventually having to send the unit to one of their recovery labs in USA to get my data recovered, I was then issued a replacement unit. This alone was such a terrible experience to go through and although their customer service was somewhat helpful in this process, it still never took away from the horrendous experience of their product failing and almost losing 8TB of important data.
I eventually was sent back my recovered data on different drive (which was already beyond an inconvenience as not having access to the data on that drive meant delaying client work and pushing projects out). They then also sent me a brand new replacement 2big 20TB drive on the 16/09/25 (a whole month of waiting for a replacement and for my data to be recovered from the faulty unit) , which I didn't open and use immediately as I didn't need that storage right away and frankly was a little nervous to even use due to the experience I had just had with the original.
At this point I was just happy all my data was recovered and that I was sent a replacement which I would eventually use again when I really needed to and didn't think much of it after that.
Then came last week 12/03/26, when I finally needed to open my replace 2Big doc and use it as I had exhausted storage on my smaller external drives. Enough time had passed from my previous experience that I was excited to finally get to use the product I had originally bought for this very reason. I unboxed it, read the installation manual to ensure I did everything correctly and then plugged it into my laptop...then nothing. It wasnt mounting or showing up. I unplugged it and looked up all the troubleshooting methods for getting it going, but the same thing happened. The light on the front of the drive which should normally be blue when its in and working was staying red and the drive was not showing up on my laptop anywhere. I then tried every other port on my laptop, different usbc-usbc cables I had and still the same result... I then tried to plug it into my partners laptop and proceed with the same troubleshooting methods to no avail.. I was beyond angry and frustrated that this was happening again, just thankfully with nothing important backed up onto the drive.
At this point, I went onto their support chat and proceed to endure the same process as the first time which was again frustrating. Eventually I requested a refund, as I had completely lost confidence in the product’s reliability and was not willing to go through the process and cost and time of sending another faulty drive off and waiting for a replacement with no real guarentee the replacement would work, even with their support saying they will ensure it works etc, the same thing they told me last time. So despite experiencing multiple failures, Seagate declined to offer a refund and instead insisted on continuing with their replacement-only policy.
And what makes the situation worse was the process required returning the faulty unit before receiving a replacement, handling packaging, logistics, and time costs myself, and the potential cost of customs duties and delays.
So regardless of trying everything in my power to get some kind of justice for this terrible product and customer experience they just keep coming back with the same story and leaving me to bare the consequences of their unreliable products and them taking very little accountability in this matter. So now I will need to go through their replacement process once again, and honestly will likely just try to sell the drive to recoup some of the cost. But the time costs and energy spent on this far outweighs the cost of the drive itself (AUD$1699 at time of purchase).
For a product and company positioned as a "professional-grade" storage solution, both the reliability and customer support fell well below expectations and are just unacceptable.
It is quite disheartening to think that despite all of that, all I can really do now is spend my time writing this review of my experience only in the hopes that it helps someone else from going through the same experience.
Based on this experience, I would not recommend buying products from Seagate or LaCie.

professional.
Seagate makes it impossible to contact them so you loose: *your money you spent on the hard drives *your work stored on the hard drives *then you loose your time vainly searching for contacts at Seagate or having to sort through endless frequently asked questions that don't apply still not to be able to fix the problems. *Then you loose even more time and even more money in vain taking the hard drives to tech professionals who can't get them working again either.
I have a Seagate expansion desktop drive as well that just died for no apparent reason taking with it years of hard work too. Seagate are the WORST hard drives I have ever used. They are total rubbish. 3 out of the 4 that I have had died. I have only ever had the Seagate hard drives fail.
All the other hard drives I have continue to work without fault.
Seagate pale in comparison to Apollo Imation portable hard drives and My Passport portable hard drives which are by far better value, more robust and after years of work still dependable.
The worst part about Seagate is that they are more than happy to take the doe but then intentionally make themselves totally unavailable to avoid dealing with customers when their products predictably fail.
In front of me right now I have well over $400.00 worth of Seagate useless junk that has entrapped hundreds of thousands of dollars irreplaceable work, thousands of important personal files and almost all my families photos.
I would not buy another Seagate under any circumstances. I warn other not to buy Seagate products. It is too risky to pay for and use a product that will predictably harm my business operations again by failing and taking my and my customers digital assets with it.
