"Tears of Red" - Author Judith Dun This is a fast-paced spy / mafia / crime tale with complex characters which keep you guessing until the end. I found myself waking up in the morning thinking about the key characters, which is the sign of good character development. I can see the possibility for taking some of these characters, and their dangerous adventures, into new books. Well done Judith Dun. Well worth the read! Show reply

The Kobo Libra arrived within days of ordering. Well and good protected packaging. Turned on straight away and downloaded my Kobo account to the new reader. Nice to be able to read in bed without turning the lights on. Show reply

I ordered and paid for a book in February A few weeks later I was told it was on back order. There was no further communication so half way through May I contacted them to be told the book was out of print and could not be supplied. This little fact did not stop them advertising the book or taking my order and payment Very poor communication and service

and giving them one more chance. It is definitely the last straw now and all the apologies and account credits in the world are not going to convince me to buy from them again. Two months ago, I put in an order for about $100 worth of books. One of them was sent relatively quickly (no problems there) but as for the other two I have heard nothing but crickets. Not a dickybird about either of them. One was a pre-order that was released on 7 May, and I allowed an extra couple of weeks for this item to arrive at their office so that they could send it. However, it should have been sent by now. I could have ordered it from USA myself and received it over a week ago - and for half the price!. Booktopia always seem to be experiencing delays. It happens every time, and it wears thin. They need to either get their act together or put a rocket up their suppliers. I suspect both. Delays can be forgiven if they happen once or twice. These things happen. But not continually. And what really annoys me more than anything is that they never contact customers to let them know about any unforeseen issues. They always wait for you to chase them, and then wonder why you're cranky. They even had the cheek to send me an email about my membership being due to expire and to send in another order to keep it going. Excuse me!! How about sending me my last order first! I'm not going to keep sending them money for books that take until eternity and beyond to get here. I've sent a couple of emails about this order, but so far have heard nothing. I'm hoping this review might put the wind up them a bit to get a wriggle on. If the books cannot be delivered promptly, I want my money back. I've had enough. I certainly wouldn't recommend this company to someone undertaking studies through university or college. Their courses would be finished before they even received their textbooks!

27 May 2024 I have finally received a response, and as usual, it is the same tired old excuses they always use of being unable to source stock and of waiting for another 30-35 business days before they have more (and they can't even guarantee this time frame)! At least they have cancelled my order, but to add insult to injury I have to wait another 1-3 business days to get my money back! Why not immediately? I can't understand why they have books available to buy on their website if they cannot keep their promises to source them. This is extremely deceptive and very bad business indeed. I am never ever buying from them again! I will go to Amazon now, and rest assured that at least I will have these titles within a couple of weeks. I should have gone there to start with instead of wasting my time with these scoundrels!

 Follow-up  · I would not know how Booktopia are nowadays. I have not purchased from them since that last order. The last thing I heard quite some months ago now was that the business closed down but has since been re-opened. I’m giving Booktopia one star because they refused to honour a perfectly valid gift card after the business changed ownership. I contacted them expecting a simple resolution, but instead received an email explaining that any gift certificates issued… Read more

before 3 July 2023 are now “no longer valid” due to administration — and that they’re not offering refunds or credit for them either.

In other words, customers who paid real money for gift cards are now left with nothing, and the new owners have chosen not to honour those obligations. Being told to “lodge a claim” through an external form instead of receiving support from the company itself just adds to the frustration — and they never reply.

It’s incredibly disappointing to see a well‑known retailer take this approach. A change in ownership shouldn’t wipe out customers’ money, and it certainly shouldn’t be the customer’s problem to chase compensation through an administrative process.

Based on this experience, I can’t recommend Booktopia and will never spend my money there again unless they reinstate the gift card.

 Follow-up  · I did try using the gift card online, but it came up as invalid. The card was still well within its validity period — it had another year left on it — and it was for $50.

was hoping to get it signed by the author in May in Brisbane. Gutted that I have to present a damaged book….yes it was in a cardboard sleeve, but it was far too big for the book ….needed bubble wrap before carefully placing it in the box. I take such good care of my books, so it left me upset instead of excited.

 Follow-up  · Thanks Booktopia for promptly dealing with my issue of a damaged book. I was immediately offered a new book, or a full refund of my purchase if requested. This has fully restored my faith in buying books online in the future.

Valid order with valid address and valid credit card delayed a week to be "verified". WHAT? – What sort of company takes an order with a VALID DEBIT CARD and a VALID ADDRESS and then delays sending the item for a WEEK because it then has to be "verified"? Verified, HOW?!!! Moreover I didn't even find out about this until I wondered what was happening, because their second email went to spam. So what have they been doing for Gmail to think that?

I am very suspicious that this is either a delaying tactic to wait for stock or a cover for falsely advertising stock they don't actually have.

If this order is not fulfilled I will be taking them to VCAT for breach of contract.

I am really not in the mood right now to be screwed around!

im very pleased with the Clara black and white Kobo e reader i purchased from booktopia. it arrived quickly and im enjoying using it. ive had the kindle reader for ten years and prefer the Kobo as i can borrow books via the Libby app which i cannot do on the kindle. the site is easy to use and i have bought books from the booktopia site which belong to me not Amazon/Audible. will be cancelling those subscriptions. Show reply

I have tried contacting Booktopia through their messaging system—since no phone number is available—but have received no response. Yet again 8 books that are marked as in stock trickle in one at a time over 6 plus weeks. I cannot keep track of what i have paid fir, their commu icatiin is awful, and i MUST remember not to use them in future.
