I’m impressed!! – I initially purchased this shaver just replace my cheap Aldi one. I am so impressed with it that I felt compelled to write this review. I genuinely don’t write reviews, in fact this is the very first review I have written. I love this shaver. Compared to my previous one and any shaver I have ever owned it works beautifully. It caters to my sensitive skin, nice close shave and it’s so easy to clean. The self clean auto function in the charging dock had me giggling like a school boy because it impressed me so much.

Shaving used to be a burden and a chore, now I look forward to shaving. I highly recommend this shaver not only does it hit a home run in affordability but also functionality.

Purchased in at Kogan.com for $134.

Don't bother wasting your money – This razor is terrible. I bought this shaver in the Black Friday sales. I get breakouts and skin irritation from manual razors, and this one is marketed to have skin sensitive technology and can be used wet or dry. First use was a horrible shave. I used shaving foam with it and It left patches of hair intact pretty much all over. I nicked my lip when trying to go back. So I stopped. The second shave I used a shave oil because I couldn't see how well it was doing with the foam. Although I could see better, the quality fo the shave was low. Third time I tried dry and gave up because it just won't give me an all-over smooth finish.

I've watched instruction videos on YouTube because I thought I was doing it wrong. But frankly, its shaving and it shouldn't be hard.

I will say that in the patches where it worked, the shave was really good. And it can be used in the shower which I also liked. But overall, I won't be using it to shave my face.

Purchased in at Shaver Shop Online store for $149.95.

Won’t turn on – This seemed like a good alternative to a safety razor blade until it stopped working after just over a month. It would be fully charged but not turn on. I had to plug it back into the charger for a few seconds to get it to work. A bit of a pain if you are already wet in the shower. So I got it replaced. I would not buy a Braun again and have already ordered a replacement from another company.

Hopeless – By far the most useless item I have ever purchased. I simply cannot get a close shave and it leaves a lot of hair behind. When you pay $100 plus I expected something much better. I had to replace my Panasonic ES8 109 as new cutters etc cost almost as much as a new one. I bought the Braun as all the stores were out of the Panasonics. The Braun is a good shaver cuts well however it doesn't have a trimmer. Good battery life, good power. The big MINUS is the so called easy clean feature. Under the cutting head on either side… Read more

are openings where excess shavings fall out so the head doesn't get too clogged. Bad idea! Having a shave after showering the shavings will stick to damp skin. If you're wearing clothing like a suit or shirt especially if it's a contrasting colour to your beard get the lint remover out! I've got fair hair and it's a nightmare when doing that quick touch up shave if I'm all suited up to go out. I decided to risk it orderd $19 cutting heads etc for my Panasonic on Ali. Stunned 100% as good as new. I still use the Braun but not all the time.

Better than expected for a low-price shaver! – There are many Braun Series 5 electric shavers. It can be confusing when trying to select one - based on various reviews online. This one is the Braun Series 5 / 51-B1000s. My partner and I looked at a few Braun Series 5 on the market and chose this one. -First of all, it was cheap, we bought it for $149 a year ago. At the time, it was a bargain.… Read more

-Secondly, it charges quickly, within 50mins for 1 hour charge. This is good, believe us. Other shavers take too long or the charge duration is poor. -Third, its a better-than-average shaver for most guys. It shaves well on most areas of the face. Under the nose, it does require another pass. And under the chin, it does require another pass. If you have flat hairs or grey hairs, it will struggle a little bit. But we have found even with more expensive shavers, the same occurs. The finish is a reasonably smooth shave. Its even better if you wash your face first. The shaving experience is also better. On the box, it says the shaver is good with beards. This may be true, but you need quite a few passes with this shaver to get a smooth result. - You can also use this shaver with a wet face. And again, the shaving experience is better. - In addition, you can wash this shaver with water/a little soap. This is unusual for most shavers - but it helps clean out this shaver better. - This shaver also shows you how much time you have left. There are 3 visible dots on the handle which become less visible as you use the shaver. When you can only see 1 dot visible, you basically have about 5-10 minutes left to shave. Once the charge is gone, it shows a red 'electric' image on the handle. Its time to use the given cord to charge the shaver. The cord isn't very long but adequate in most cases to reach a power point. - One poor point with this shaver is the 'head cover'. The cover may well protect the shaver head while not in use, but it can easily flip off - making it fairly useless in its 'protective' application.

Overall, we would recommend this Braun Series 51-B1000s for most men looking for a cheap but fairly good electric shaver.

Braun S5 accidentally put into hot water & dettol – I have always bought Braun from this section of retail. I forgot to take the S5 out of my carry bag when the bag got mould all over it on bathroom floor. I placed the bag - with the shaver inside it not knowing it was in it - then put the in very hot water and Dettol. realising what I have done, I wiped it down & got it to charge up in full. It works as though nothing has happened!! brilliant Braun!!! Show details

Fantastic Shaver – Purchased this shaver for my Dad for xmas and he absolutely loves it. He was initially a little worried as he had heard the series 7 was better, but it did not disappoint. Charging Stand IS available for Series 5! – My husband needed a new shaver. Mostly has had Braun shavers for the last few decades so he went for a new Series 5/5140s. He only uses it for shaving the corners of his mouth and the dimple on his chin to save on cutting himself!! He says it does a good job for that. He hasn’t tried it as a wet shaver. complete the shave! He prefers it that way as he claims he gets a better result for him.

What I found annoying was that all his previous Braun shavers had come with a charger stand. Somehow we assumed this one did too. No it didn’t. (I think there are other Series 5 that come with some sort of self cleaning stand that was big and bulky and more expensive)

I let it lay about in the cupboard for a few weeks, taking up extra room, before attempting to find out if there was a stand that fitted.

I rang the Shaver Shop where we purchased the shaver. No, nothing sold like that!

I tried Proctor and Gamble who are the distributors of Braun in Australia. They sent me to a WA supplier for parts. He couldn’t find anything on his system and said there wasn’t anything available! (A subsequent email to P&G did suggest I contact other parts suppliers - in other states, I suspect.)

I then resorted to good Dr Google and found a link to Statewide Services in Coburg Victoria that had a Series 9 charger listed. On closer inspection the wording on their webpage said it would fit a S5 and a whole lot of others!

I ordered online and it has arrived today. IT DOES FIT!!!

The crappiest piece of shaving tool I ever bought !!! – I write my review without any prejudice. Mr Braun, I am confident you read and value your customers' feedback, you analize them properly and try to improve your products, so please sit down when you read mine. I am trying my hardest to contain my anger !!! To state accurate facts: 1. I have used Braun shavers for the last 50 years, always happy… Read more

with your products, until my latest purchase. 2. I bought this shaver about 6 months ago; I choose again Braun over other brands in the shop and use it three times per week. 3. to start with, who needs a full set of unusable gadgets to shave my legs, pubs, chest, back, the head and my schnauzer? I basically just want to shave my face !!!!! 4. I have a $15 electric toothbrush which I place in the charger base instantly, whereby this Braun shaver takes forever to locate the hole underneath to plug it in the base charger, almost as long as finding my wife's G spot !!!! 5. the previous Braun shaver I used, I removed the head in order to clean it by pressing a button on the side; with this model, I am cracking my nails constantly and swear when I remove the current head; who the hell came up with this torturous design ??? 6. with the previous Braun, I started shaving by removing the longer hair first, by shifting the starter switch up; with this model, I start by placing the approp. gadget, shave, then remove it and place the normal shaving head - see 5. above (result: cracked and damage nails). 7. once I start shaving itself, it shaves ok. 8. at the end of the shaving process, the torture continues, as I have to remove the head to wash it, then place the shaver back in the charger - see 4. above. To summarise, shame on the incompetent employee that came up with the design, the Chief Designer/ Engineer that approved it and Mr Braun himself for employing these two. Mr Braun, are you even looking at the products you sell, and is somebody in your organisation testing them?? I would make all three of you remove and replace the head of the Series 5 shaver continuously for an hour, then another hour place the shaver in the base charger, so you all suffer the way I do !!! It is disgraceful, and all three of you - hang you head in shame !!!!

I lived and worked in Germany and Australia for German companies for any years, never ever have I seen such design incompetence !!!!

I hope you change your personnel and design, however, I will never buy your product again !!!!

Buyer beware, replacement foils are VERY expensive! – You have to replace the foils every 6-18 months depending on how often you use it and how coarse your beard is. And the price is astronomical: currently $70 on Amazon. So you can buy the razor for about $100-150 on eBay or Amazon, but they get you on the blades. It's a bit like buying a printer: machine cheap, consumables dear. Show details

Compared to what I have used for nearly 40 years this is rubbish – I have had a beard for near 40 years and have used everything from cheapie K Mart hair clippers to Phillip's mid range products, without doubt this is the worst product I have used. It does not cut close, it leaves clumps, it pulls, it cuts the skin. In short it is a disaster. Pretty poor performance, lousy after sales service – My wife bought me this shaver for my birthday to replace a cheapie from Aldi. To say that I am disappointed with its performance is an understatement. You have to go over an area, again and again, and if there is more than one days growth, it takes twice as long. I don't have a heavy beard, so it should do the job easily. I've tried everything… Read more

that is suggested in the booklet, but it still does a very ordinary job. At least someone could have spoken to me about the problem. No answer at all from the last E mail. Very poor effort Braun. Don't waste your money on this product. I would never buy a Braun product again if this is the way they treat their customers. I hope that someone from Braun reads these reviews, and bothers to contact me.

Good at first but hard to clean, prefer Phillips rotary – This shaver has a feel of solid quality in the hand. The motor feels and sounds powerful, and has a stronger vibration than my previous shaver, a Philips rotary. The stronger vibration takes a little bit of getting used to when you're against bone. works fine as long as you don't try to go too fast.

However: at first the shaver gave me a nice close shave but now after about 5 months of use it's leaving too much stubble. I wonder if there is a stubble build-up inside the foil where I can't see. I've cleaned the shaver every day as the salesperson advised me: rinse through the foil with water, and then spray with "Shaver Guard" cleaner spray daily. My shaver didn't come with the Braun 'Clean & Charge Station' and I didn't think I'd need one since I could keep my previous shaver clean by dissassembling and cleaning it out; but the Braun doesn't seem to dissassemble like the Philips. So I'm disappointed about the drop-off in shave quality after such a short time.

Unreliable! Even the replacement shaver has failed! DO NOT BUY – I haven't used an electric shaver for about 30 years. electric shaver another try. I settled on the Braun Series 5 wet/dry shaver, without the cleaning station, as it seemed to be the sweet spot with regards to price vs performance. I didn't buy the cleaning station as I have too many bits & pieces in my bathroom already & didn't like having to buy cleaning/lubricating solution into the foreseeable future. The shaver is easy to clean under the tap & I give it a spray of lubricant/steriliser after each clean. I started out using the shaver 'dry', but then tried it wet, under the shower. I found the wet shave to be better for me, I guess the water allows the head to move more smoothly over the skin. The shave is not as close as my old Gillette Mach 5, but the convenience of the electric shaver makes up for this. It is also quick & easy to do a quick touch up with the electric shaver, if I am going out to dinner etc.

UPDATE: It is now 17 months since I bought the S5. It stopped working, while on a 35 day cruise (lucky the on board shop had disposable razors) & was serviced in May 2019. On 4th Nov, 2019 the shaver started to turn off intermittently, during a shave (fully charged). I put it on charge again, which only took a few minutes. When I turned the charger off the shaver started running by itself!

I contacted J A Appliances (the Australian Braun Shaver service agents), who asked me to return the shaver again. This time I do not want it repaired, but want it replaced or the purchase price refunded. I will report on the outcome .....

Update: 15/11/2019 I have received replacement. This is the latest Model S5030. Thanks to Procter & Gamble, the Australian agents for Braun shavers, for the prompt replacement.

Update 2: 23/01/2021 Well this week the replacement S5030 shaver has started turning itself off randomly, 2 or 3 times during each shaving session (Fully charged). I had just purchased a new foil .... waste of money! I have ordered a new Braun Series 9340 shaver, hope it's more reliable than the S5030 & S5140S models.

Worth Your Buck - BEST REVIEW – I have sensitive skin and I used this for 2 days now and I had no irritation. It's very smooth and cuts my course beard precisely. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars because I don't really care for the design to much. just died for no reason.

I did some research with the current crop of Braun shavers available. I was never going to get the Series 9 as there is no way in hell I'm going to pay in excess of $350 for a shaver. It then came down to Series 5 and Series 7. Even the most basic S7 is $300. I checked out some reviews and found that there is hardly any difference between the Series 5 and 7 in the way they shave and the quality off the shave. The differences were mainly cosmetic.

I found the S5 with Clean & Charge Station at Harvey Norman for $175. What a bargain!

Once I used it for the first time, I was amazed. My face was as smooth as smooth and felt like I had just shaved with a blade. Even under the neck area where every other shaver had struggled to give a close shave, it was very smooth. To top it off the Clean & Charge cleaned this shaver better than any other I had tried. The others seemed to partially clean the shaver head but still left remnants of whiskers behind. Not with this one as when its cleaned, the shaver head comes out looking like new.

I 100% recommend this shaver.

Great Shave for my growth rate – This unit cost $149 and is called simply S5. The receipt says it is the 5140S. It replaces an older Braun shaver I had (8750?) This is a much better shaver. smooth but I prefer it anyway. It suits me because I can shave everyday comfortably. With a blade I have to wait for the second day for a good shave. Shaving under the chin is very good but you have to know the technique. You do the opposite of what you do with a blade. Look down, do not look up to stretch your neck. Stretching the skin reduces the contact surface and makes it harder to shave closely.

Highly recommended for those who want a comfortable shave everyday but have a light growth rate. A big improvement over my older shaver which was not a wet/dry model.

Frustrating – The controls on the razor are where you hold it, so you keep turning the rotating head on and off. Rotating head is an unnecessary gimmick anyway. The trimmer is too short and stumpy to work well. Very hard to clean the hair from the cutting blades. Cannot find replacement heads, and its only 12 months old. Avoid, badly designed.

Excellent shaver – In short: excellent. This model (5040WD) is waterproof so it can be easily cleaned. It can be used when talking a shower, but I never tried. Shaves closely, additional trimming blade works very well as well. Very small disappointing peculiarities: it is not as small as I expected, and rather noisy. However overall I am very happy with the results, and would highly recommend it.
