Breville Coffee Machines
5.0 from 8 reviews
Pros: Well thought out functional machine.
Cons: The water tank did not seal right off and leaked to start with, but after it was clicked in a couple of times it has been fine since.
Overall: The smart grinder has been the tricky bit to get right. To begin with we were making finer and finer grinds, only to find that the shots were taking over 60 seconds to extract. These were bitter to taste. Dial back the amount by one click, a nice firm tamp and the shot is done around 30 seconds. A perfect coffee. Play with the grind after that.
The other thing is to buy freshly roasted beans, and shop around. This machine will really show up a poor batch of beans.
The Smart Grinder and the coffee machine really do go together.

Pros: Performance, design, steam power, quiet operation - almost everything!
Cons: Nothing. Perhaps the ony negative is that you'll drink twice as much coffee after buying this machine!
Overall: Up until recently I'd gone through two Twin-Thermo Block Sunbeam machines (EM6910), but when the last one broke down again I decided to buy the Breville Dual Boiler. Sure it's another step up in price (600-700 more) , but I had initially promised myself to buy a Simonelli Musica which would have cost even more.

After reading so many positive reviews about the design, I took the plunge and I must say that I'm absolutely amazed. The design and technology built into this machine is second to none in this price range and it easily competes with professional machines costing thousands more.

I also purchased the BCG800 smart grinder at the same time and it's a great match for this machine but I won't go into details about the grinder here.

Every aspect is well thought out on the BS900 and build quality seems superb. When first unpacking the machine you will be more than pleasantly surprised to find a year's supply of water filters included. You also get a set of cleaning tablets to ensure timely machine servicing is initially taken care of.

Setting up is as easy as pie. The water canister can be filled from the top via a spring loaded lid or you can remove it for easy cleaning. An added feature is a swivelling foot which levers into place via a control under the drip tray. Another great feature is that the water canister overflows into the drip tray in case you over-fill it from the top - fantastic!.

The group handle is professional quality, plus you have the option to purchase a naked portafilter for this machine which lets you fine-tune your brewing technique in ways that other cheaper machines won't let you do.

Performance is absolutely amazing! I didn't think that a machine could make so much difference in taste to my coffee because I'd already been quite happy with the brew produced by the Sunbeam. Let me tell you - there's no comparison. Best thing is that you can get repeatable performance and near perfect extraction each and every time.

You can read lots about the exact features in the machine elsewhere, but there's top of the line technology built into the brewing mechanisms in the Breville, which shows when you taste the coffee.

The steamer is again no comparison to a thermo-block design. In fact there's so much steam power on tap that the designers have given this machine a three hole output on the wand, which I'd never seen before in a home based machine. Making perfect micro-foam takes no effort and is whisper quiet.

You'd be nit-picking to find any fault in the design. The only change I'd wish for would perhaps be that they move the light for the steamer to point down towards the drip tray, but that's about it.

Cannot recommend the machine highly enough if going on "bang for your buck" performance. It comes with a two year factory warranty and I just hope that the components are high quality enough to last double that.

If you love drinking a good brew - just buy it and don't look back.

Pros: easy to assemble, simple to use
Cons: a bit on the expensive side
Overall: I purchased the Breville Dual Boiler BES900 Espresso Machine after my old one packed in. I had read a few great reviews on the internet about this machine, however they were all from overseas sites. After reading all the reviews, etc, I decided this is the machine I was getting. I don't particularly like fully automatic coffee machines, as I don't think they make a coffee as good as semi manual ones. I purchased it from Harvey Norman. The salesperson couldn't really tell me much about it, as he said they were just released, and he also seemed dumbfounded as to why I did not want to purchase a fully automatic one. I am so glad I went with my gut feeling. The Breville Dual Boiler BES900 makes a fantastic coffee. The crema it produces rivals any coffee purchased from a coffee takeawy store. The instructions that came with the machine are easy to understand, and the machine is really simple to use (my husband can even use it). I would definately recommend anyone wanting to purchase a domestic coffee machine to have a look at the Breville Dual Boiler BES900

Pros: High quality, beautiful to look at, fast and reliable, amazing shots and perfectly steamed micro-foam milk
Cons: Zero problems and nothing wrong after 500+ shots
Overall: The Breville Dual Boiler is my 5th machine in a line of upgrade-itus machines in an attempt to get a boutique style espresso experince in my home. I am a serious enthusiast and have spent the last year and a half deciphering all the components and technique that go into making the perfect espresso and cappuccino. This is the only machine out there that I have found tht makes this possible without purchasing a GS3 or some incredibly expensive pro-sumer unit. Once I purchased the Breville Smart Grinder (which is incredible and makes perfectly ground even coffee grinds) and spent time with different pro barista's dialing this baby in (which was me learning how shots should look, feel and taste) this machine delivered big time.

Incredible results, incredible consistency, and you can taste the tiny nuances of each type of coffee you put through the machine. I only use serious coffee less than 10 days old from date of roast from either Red Brick in London, Intelligenstia, or CREMA in Nashville where i live.

The build quality is excellent as well and I have flown this machine across country (in a custom Pelican case) and checked it on airlines and it is built like a tank. Take it out of the case, wait exactly 6 minutes for it to heat up and then start pulling awesome shots!!

It also steams milk like a champ! The first time I did it I got perfect micro-foam and have been pouring latte art ever since.

Cleaning and maintenance are a dream as well with its simple "clean me" signal it gives you every 200 shots. Put in the cleaning filter in the group head, drop in a little cleaning pill, and 10 minutes later your ready to rock.

I have pulled at least 500 shots and it works like a charm. Love it!!

Pros: Repeatability of perfect espresso. High value features such as heated group head, managed pressure control, and excellent steam wand. Solid yet gorgeous construction.
Cons: I wish the shot clock would automatically appear when pouring a shot (instead of having to manually select it). Note however that virtually no other machine even has a shot clock.
Overall: Takes practice to get the perfect espresso, but no more than any other machine in its class. Very high sucess ratio. Bundle came with Breville Smart Grinder. A lot of excellent technologies that quietly contribute to the perfect espresso.

The portafilter looks and feels solid and of high quality, it does however contain a removeable plastic insert inside (presumably to reduce temperature fluctuation when pulling shots). Most advanced users will remove the insert from day oneas it adds no real value and just hinders cleaning.

My over pressure valve was calibrated incorrectly out of the box — pressure regularly shot up to (and sometimes passed) 11 bar. Promptly fixed by Breville NZ, now it works perfectly.

Pure pleasure to use. Would buy it again.

Pros: Excellent quality and very high quality coffe making.
Overall: Let me start by saying that I love my coffee. So I needed to find a machine that could basically replicate coffee that I would buy from a great coffee shop and equally good barrister. The Breville Dual Boiler machine does just that. Perfect crema too.
