Overall: I've had this printer for years (5?) and I've definitely got my dollars worth out of it. Although it took me a long time to get the right setting notes for university turn out great.
Jamming is a problem so you have to figure out a way to prevent this (printed pages sometimes get sucked back into the machine and jam it). I go through almost 1000 sheets per semester which costs me a set of colours and 2 black cartridges (and I always print in colour where possible), and the ink I get is really cheap online (about $35 for B+B+Y+C+M). Nowadays it's probably slow at printing. It's shaky but this doesn't seem to effect the outcome.
Cons: Chews through ink like you wouldn't believe it. As far as I can tell it won't print in black and white if a colour cartridge is empty, so you can be out of yellow ink but can't print a simple black and white word document. Spends 10 minutes cleaning itself before printing anything.
Overall: Not a good printer. You get what you pay for I guess, but then you end up wasting LOTS of money on cartridge refills. I would not recommend this printer to anyone.
Pros: A brand new machine costs cheap. It can scan and print. It has a photo printer. The scan quality is great, you can even adjust the resolution to the desired clarity.
Cons: It can only scan up to letter-sized documents. I wish the scanner can also accomodate legal-sized documents. The ink is so expensive. You can only print so little with one set of cartridges. After I used the printer for some time, the error "Clean Unable" appeared and the machine became unusable. Because the User's Manual and instructions on the Brother website were so vague, I had to bring the machine to a service center to have the thing fixed. I was charged a high amount for the service. Why did Brother not put in its manual how to fix this thing in the first place so that I can also save money? Plus, it's really a hassle to bring the machine to the service center when I am so busy. The manual should show how to fix the machine. Also, if the problem is in the printing process alone the whole machine shouldn't be affected. What I mean is, it should still be able to scan. But no, the whole machine just wouldn't work unless the printing problem should first be resolved.
Overall: Brother printer sucks, I will never recommend it to anyone. Initially it works so well, I thought I got value for my money. Ultimately, I realized that it costs so much just to afford the ink cartridges and its maintenance. It is such a bother just to bring the machine to service centers. I wish I could just fix it at home. Plus all the parts you are required to pay as replacement for those that conked out. I took care of my printer very well, I just couldn't understand why it should malfunction. I'm expecting another malfunction that will force me to fork out money on my underused printer.
Pros: Hate it Hate it Hate it do not buy it or Brother EVER
Cons: It Jams constantly. Access to the Jam is terrible. You have to buy a new printer once it Jams. Also the Scanner does NOT install on the software if you ring the help desk they will tell you to screen dump the error and email it to them. Their service matches the machine - CRAP!!!
Overall: This is the worst printer ever. One jam and you have to buy a new one as there is no access to clear the jam. The scanner does not install from the software and the service offered by Brother matches the quality of the machine CRAP! Buy anything else it cannot be worse than this. Please tell all your friends Don't buy BROTHER!
Pros: It is inexpencive. Copys, scans and prints all in one.
Cons: Mine lasted only 15 months before it stopped working all together. it was just out of warranty.
Overall: I bought this machine because it copied, scanned and printed. I only payed $100 for it. I did have to go out and purchase the cord to connect it to the computer seperately which set me back $16. i was disapointed about that. the image quality is reasonably okay. i have seen worse but i've also seen better. i'd probably rate the quality of printing photos to be 7/10. The worst thing about this printer is that it doesnt seem to be built to last. i only had mine for 15 months and it suddenly stopped working. i was unable to fix it myself and it was out of warranty so i replaced it with a different brand. With this one id say you get what you pay for.
Pros: It's a good all-in-one and I got this at a low price. Good cheap option for the home office.
Cons: Paper drawer constantly sticks, I've never managed to open it it a single go. Chews through a lot of ink. Software is clunky, memory-hungry and invasive.
Overall: I guess it comes down to: you get what you pay for. I got my Brother DCP-130C for cheap from The Good Guys, and that's pretty much where the good stuff ended. It's impossible to use the paper draw conveniently - the paper feed controller jams against the back of the draw, meaning you need to jiggle the draw 10-15 times just to change paper. Changing ink is straightforward, but doing something as simple as putting in the USB cord requires you to firstly lift the scan bed and then route a USB cable through a series of small clips, praying that you have enough play left in the cord to be able to actually plug it into your computer. It prints OK, but quality degrades quickly over time. Not by any means a user-friendly machine, it's not helped by the Brother interface - hundreds of megs of 'functionality' that chews through RAM and doesn't actually add any real value.
