Brother HL-2140 / HL-2142

Worth the money – First off, the cartridge refills for this printer is affordable, and I have been using this product for 3 years now. It can be used easily, connected through USB, but it only prints 1 sided. I would have to manually print 2 sided pages, and the paper gets jammed very occasionally when printing both sided. In all, it is not much of a trouble and very affordable! Show details
Excellent And Trouble-Free – This is an excellent laser printer. Easy to use, trouble-free, always prints neatly, economical (for as long as you find a supplier for the toner) at an estimated cost of 3.6c per page using the toner that yields 2,500 pages. I never had a problem with this printer for 4 1/2 years. However, after a certain number of pages, the drum unit needs replacement. The drum unit costs A$170 and a new laser printer unit would be much cheaper to buy.
Cheap, Reliable B&W Printer for Home – I wanted to find a cheap and reliable solution to expensive colour inkjet printers - mainly expensive cartridges. By giving up colour and switching to a mono laser printer (Who needs colour when you have Officeworks/Big W etc?) we have been able to drastically reduce our printing costs. This printer was $44 on sale at a printer cartridge shop. The… Read more · 2
reviews for this series of printer were good and the stats said it would produce 1000 A4 pages before needing a new cartridge and it has. No problems for 5 years or more. Other printers will probably be as good but now you know this one is good, and if you see it or similar on the shelf for a reasonable $$, don't hesitate. I think ink jet cartridges are so over-priced they force people to buy a new printer before buying a replacement cartridge. Cartridge manufacturer price gouging should be banned. In the meantime, a laser printer will help reduce this unnecessary waste. The quality is excellent. Less waste, low purchase and running cost, great quality Only black & white at this price
Cheap workhorse – Bought it a couple of years ago as cheapest replacement for a Canon laser. Finally ran out of toner but compatible cartridges are <$20 on ebay so I'll keep it running for now. Seems likely to jam if you switch it on with a job already in the queue - better if it warms up for a few seconds before sending. To be honest I don't really like this… Read more
printer but it's hard to kill and the wife seems happy with it. Cheap, acceptable print quality, toner lasts well. Noisy, feels flimsy, jams a bit more than I'd like, bigger and uglier than some.
Basic black no fuss, easy to use, good yeild from toner, ideal for home, business use – Have used many Cannon brand printers and inkjets, just like the brother better, good solid workhorse. Does not give any trouble, 2 minutes to clear a paper jam, 5 minutes to change toner. Wished I bought 2/3 and put them in the cupboard for the future. They are on special now for around $48 if look hard or be quick. If you use Reflex, not many… Read more
paper jams, if you wants to print 2 sided, you just reload the paper after it cools down and print the other sides, I used it for brochers for my tour, and has done many copies. If it says you are out of toner, you just take out your toner drum and find the toner level window , put some tape over it and you get another 200 pages out of it.
Bad – I decided not to buy the Brother while looking for a replacement for a solid little Samsung ML2010 which will NOT work with a Mac OSX upgrade, whatever I do (Sam. don't upgrade his drivers too often!). I rejected the brother because I thought the build was a bit flimsy but mainly because of the split toner cartridge and drum arrangement. This… Read more
reduces the cost of carts, though not by that much ($75 against $100-125). After 10K to 20K copies you are looking at replacing the drum. Officeworks had the printer for $139 (compared to around $120 for a Xerox or HP) but the replacement drum was $209. Given that the printer has a drum in it already and a cartridge and a lot more besides, how can they justify such a disgraceful price for a replacement part? Almost 150% of the new product! When the time came, you'd simply throw out the printer and buy a new model, right? I hope they're not claiming any environmental credentials anywhere.
I found this simply outrageous, regardless of the quality of the printer. Lower cost toner than opposition models. Paper tray is fully enclosed. Flimsy build, ugly design, cost of consumables.
Excellent – Compact, light, economical, easy to use, reliable, and fast. Good quality prints. Great for student & home use. Accepts low cost generic cartridges, no problem. If you need to replace drum, just buy another printer, its cheaper than the replacement drum & comes with a new full size cartridge as well for under $100 if you shop wisely. If it does… Read more
have paper jam, which is very infrequent, very easy to clear. Would buy again. Small, light, economical, easy to use, reliable and if it does have paper jam, which is very infrequent, easy to deal with.
Bad – Cheap and easy to use. Printer cartridges are not cheap - almost as cheap to replace the whole printer. In my experience toner cartridge needs changing too frequently. Easy to use and cheap to buy. Very helpful at the service centre and offered to send me one free toner cartrigde to replace the two I have gone through in 5 months (and I do not… Read more
print more than 100 pages per month)! Hopefully I can get a few more prints out of the next one. I purchased my HL2142 in May because my old printer died (it was the model before this one and I was very happy with it). After two months I had to reprace the toner cartridge @$80.00. Then just today the toner light came on again 3 months after replacing the old one. I would have printed much less than half of one packet of paper( less than 200 sheets). If this continues we will not be keeping this printer as we got it because laser printers were supposed to be more cost effective.
Excellent – I love this product, have purchased 2 for work (and am getting another one for our other branch) and have one at home, good, solid, reliable, no problems, no error messages, sets up on my network without any problems. Love it! Very well priced, cheap cartridges (ebay $25 ea delivered), reliable, compact, hidden paper tray, loads heaps of paper.
Good – I purchased the HL-2140 from Joyce Mayne for $84 this month (March 2011). I have only printed out 61 pages, so I am no expert, but it still reports 100% toner left, no jams so far, (just keep your paper dry). Easy set up, low noise when printing, no noise in sleep mode, paper tray enclosed in printer and printout sits on the top of printer with… Read more
no need to fold anything out. Good quality printing. Interesting information about the printer provided when you print out the printer settings. Warranty is for only 12 months. Replacement Original toner is more than new printer. I hope when the time comes to having to get toner I can get it cheaper somewhere else.
Quality Printer – The printer is a laser jet so it prints flawlessly with minimal problems. It is also very fast and has a massive toner yield capacity of well over 1000 pages. Brother always make reliable and trustworthy printers so its no surprise to me that they've earned a good reputation. In terms of noise, it is moderate. While turning on, it warms up and… Read more
can be irritating, but while on standby, it is completely silent and while printing, it emits the same amount of noise as any other printer.
The advantage of having a laser jet is that it gives flawless results, the paper is smooth with no smudges like ink jets, and it has a very fast printing rate. The toner capacity is above average so I wont be replacing it for a while. If it ever runs out, buying a new one would actually cost a lot more than the printer itself. However if you buy online, it is substantially cheaper costing around 20 bucks on ebay/amazon.
When opening the printer from the front, the cover feels like its about the break in half because the plastic is so thin, the opening/closing mechanism could do with some adjustments because it is very difficult to close.
Overall its an excellent printer and it would only cost around 30-40 bucks now. note, a wireless version of this printer has come out which means that there is one less cable Printing quality and high toner capacity Quality of plastic and cover opening mechanism
Good – I got this printer to do daily prints quickly and with costs in mind. The last printer I had had multiple cartridges which were expensive to replace and a pain. This printer supercedes all that. I do my prints and they're done with a minimum of fuss. I didn't get it for quality but the quality is good anyway. I have no complaints, it's doing… Read more
everything I wanted and the cartridge it originally came with is still going strong. A good buy for it's low cost. Fast, reliable, reasonable quality prints. Nothing yet.
Good – I got this to replace an inkjet as I was sick of the cost of cartridges. It has been an easy to use high quality machine. The cost of running it seems quite economical. It was easy to set up and to use. I am very happy with the speed that the machine runs and the clearness and clarity of the print. It gives a professional look to my assignments.… Read more

Good – If you just want black and white printing, dont even bother with an inkjet. This is cheap to buy, and much more economical on the cartridges. It does a better quality print also. The size is another bonus - it is quite light,. Relatively cheap to buy (got it under $100). Does a good quality black and white print. Not constantly replacing… Read more
cartridges like in an inkjet printer. The price of replacement toner. Havent had to replace it yet, so it is lasting a while, but the toner costs almost as much as the printer itself - should still be much more economical than an inkjet.
Good – A very good printer for school children, Uni students, small office or for home. If you plan to save money and does not print regularly this is an ideal solution. Small size helps you to handle it easily. I have saved lot of time and money using this type of printer as a student. But it does not have auto doble side printing. So you have to… Read more
manually feed papers for double side printing. but still there is an easy option for double side printing in print setup.
You can save toner also a lot by selecting 300dpi and medium or low quality printing. But still you can get better quality prints using above setups. Very good for students and home office

Very good clarity. I have tried and printed upto 3000 A4 pages from the original toner cartirage (Expeted prints per cartirage is 2500). That means you can save a lot.You can save toner also a lot by selecting 300dpi and medium or low quality printing. But still you can get better quality prints using above setups.
