Pros: Neat - comes with everything - printer, fax & photocopier
Cons: When a fax is coming through it tries to work out whether it is a call or not - it does not automatically register that it is a fax coming through.
Overall: Occasionally have problems with printing or connection. It worked for a while but maybe because i didn't use it for a few weeks while I was away it has totally stopped working - error kept saying change ink but when I put all new ink colours it still wouldn't work. To send it for repair would cost too much.

Pros: Nothing good to say
Cons: Black won't print no matter what I try. Also keeps getting lost on the woreless connection. Waste of time and money
Overall: This is a very ordinary printer. it is unreliable in almost every aspect of use. maybe it would be ok if used daily, but if that is required then they should advise before purchase. This is a carppy printer.

Pros: Reduces clutter on my desk.
Cons: Unreliable printing.
Overall: Worked fine for a year or so, but eventually I reached a point where I had to do a cleaning cycle every day to get a good print. Then black stopped working completely, even with new ink and many cleaning cycles in a row. It's impossible to reach the print head so now I gotta throw the whole thing away. Time for a new printer.

Pros: Compact size, excellent print quality, decent capacity cartridges.
Cons: Printhead clogs too easily.
Overall: I used this mostly as a printer for about 1 year and it was great, until the ink ran out. I used a cheap refil kit to refil it a few times and it still worked fine. Then I left it unused for a few months...

When I tried using it again, the black colour wouldn't print properly (missing fine lines) indicating some clogged nozzles in the printhead. No amount of deep cleaning cycles or excessive printing would clear the blockage. I'm talking several days of trying, even flushing the ink through with special ink disolving fluid could not fix it.

The problem is that the printhead is buried deep within the printer and is basically fixed in place, so you cannot manually clean it. I would have had to send it in to be repaired, at significant cost. So I'm back to using my trustly old Canon BJC-85 which is simply excellent - even after sitting unused for over a year.

I would buy one of these again if I got it cheap, but I would make sure I don't leave it unused for any longer than a couple of weeks. I think this applies to all modern bubble jet printers, especially if you use DIY refill kits.

Overall: I have had a MFC-640CW for a couple of months now. I hate it. It never seems to do the same thing twice. The most annoying thing the delayed cut in on the answer phone. It last about 4 seconds and it just gives the impression the line has gone dead, hence you get loads of calls but no messages, people just hang up. On the plus side, it's great to look at and does free up desk space and the print quality is very good.

BUT if you need you phone answered - stay away. I registered my problem with Brother and an engineer did come back and tell me the delay was unavoidable because the machine was working out whether the call was a Fax or not. I have had machines before and this should not be the case

Overall: Officeworks (SA) had these machines out on special for $279 on 7-9-06. Anyone buying this unit for the phonehandset/speaker phone, as I did, will be very disappointed. They are of very poor quality and speech distorts. I have disconnected the handset and plugged a Panasonic cordless phone base station into the extension phone port and it works as the brother product should. The speed dial compared to other earlier models is hopeless. Printing, faxing, scanning and answering machine seem ok and I havent used the camera card reader yet.
For what I paid I guess I expected too much.
