Piece of crap – Every single page there's a paper jam. I will never again buy a Brother product. This piece of trash has caused so much stress and wasted paper, I'd been better off if I didn't have a printer at all. Show details
Brother is making me wait on repair – Evolve Equipment Management (Brother service agent) insisted on a new set of inks be supplied by me before they would do a warranty repair on my Brother printer. Given that a new set of inks cost more than I paid for the printer and in Brothers own terms and conditions they state that consumables are not covered by their warranty, I refused to… Read more
supply a new set of ink.
Evolves Service Manager refused to begin work until I did supply inks.
I complained to Brother who, agreed to send a set to Evolve- that was 4 weeks ago.
I'm still waiting for my warranty repair and haven't hear anything from either Evolve or Brother yet as to the status of my repair.

"I have just spoken to Evolve and they advised me that the machine has just arrived. You can drop by anytime and pick up the replacement machine. (Brother 20th October).
The printer was there and after unpacking and installing the software it has been working fine since.
My email to Brother- "I haven't heard from you regarding my replacement printer?" (20th October).
Brother response:
Good inexpensive printing – Print quality good. Because of cartridges having no chip generic cartridges are easy and cheap to buy. Printed about 6 cases of A4 (90 000 sheets) in the 3 years I've had the printer and it is still going strong. A3 printing good from AutoCAD. This is my network printer and it serves Apple Ipads, and also my Windows 10 laptop and Windows 7 Desktop no connection problems.
Great printer – I have been using this printer since September 2013 and have found it to be reliable and easy to use. I have used it for printing and scanning A3 plans. I paid $208 at Officeworks. I think it was a bargain. I have had no problems. If I was buying now I would get the one with two paper trays.
Am I the lucky one? – I have been using this printer for the last 3yrs and it's been working perfectly. I have been usign scanning, faxing and printing. ( Some A3 printing as well) . I think this printer is great value for money. Maybe I had horrible printer before (Lexmark) so that I might feel the Brother printer is great?? It's shame that the printer gets too… Read more
many bad reviews, but I might be the lucky one.
I am still using this with windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and I haven't updated any PC to windows 10 yet. So once I upgrade my computers, then I might have the same problem.
Constant paper jams/misfeeds – We had high expectations for this printer. It failed on all counts. From network connection issues to constant paper jams this printer was essentially non-functional from day 1. There was no support for or solution to the jamming problems. This printer is the reason we will not consider Brother products in the future.
Please dont by this printer ,waste of money – It always have ink head problem plus it takes lot of time to print. Cheap & really bad for all! It should be banned.
A printer? No – ... A brother? Yes, it behaves just like a little brother would, annoying you to no end by not working properly and jamming papers every 2nd page or every page on a bad day... Stay away from it!
Not worth the buy – Total piece of junk. Worked lovely for a little while and then like everyone else says it's then constant paper jam, no paper fed, bloody annoying.
Was OK, now it's a piece of junk – I was using the printer but upgraded to os x, reinstalled the new drivers for OS x downloaded from the Brother site specifically, followed all instructions precisely, and now nothing works. Can't even see it on the system. Went through the process again, deleted the old files, and now I have a heap of junk where a printer used to be. The quality… Read more
was always pretty average when it did work even at the highest setting. If you intent to upgrade to MAC OS X and have this printer just throw it out and buy another brand after the upgrade
Printing costs extraordinarily high – I've owned literally dozens of printers over the years and this was my first brother unit, which I purchased for the A3 scanning capability. Have had the printer powered on now for approx 4 months and having printed only a few documents I was shocked to see the low ink warning come on across basically all of the ink cartridges (these are suppose… Read more
to be fairly high capacity!)
A quick check of the maintenance system showed the unit had only printed 50 odd pages yet it exhausted approx $130 worth of ink!! (There is a trick to generating a system report which shows the actual power on hours, page prints etc) So that works out to a bit under $3 a page cost?
Anyway I contacted Brother assuming they would ask for it to be returned and reinstate the lost ink but to my total surprise I was told that this was normal and won't be fixed..
I then asked for escalation to a senior technician who again confirmed also that it was normal for brother printers to do this. Apparently while they are plugged into power they chew through ink in randomly in self cleaning cycles. This also explained the noise every few hours from the printer while it was turned off (cleaning itself)
Although all printers need cleaning cycles I've never in the last 20 years of working in IT seen an inkjet printer cost so much to run or need to cycle this often! Most of mine have been Canon's, Epson's or other brands and you will get close to the rated capacity of the cartridges even with low usage.
Looks like this will be the first and last Brother especially given Brother cannot see the problem with a page costing nearly $3 to print.
Beyond the ink here is my feedback:
1. Very noise as it constantly cleans itself
2. Setting up network scanning is like pulling teeth and in the end I gave up. Even with an IT Computer Sys Engineering degree.
3. Wasn't able to get it working on key operating systems, their software is not built to every OS and even though the download site says there is software this isn't exactly right, support at least confirmed this much was true.
4. Software is rubbish compared to that offered by other brands, I'm particularly use to Canon tools which I thought was average until being forced to use the Brother software and tools!
5. Scanning is pretty hopeless, scan resolution is mediocre, basically no intelligence onboard to do image border detection or alignment that I've come to expect in a multi-function. It's a scanner from the dark ages.
6. Print quality was pretty average on plain paper. (and that's without realising it was costing $3 a page)
7. Support were "unsupportive" and could not provide any useful information. Have been made to wait weeks for them to get back to me.
8. Scanner often jams
9. Even A4 Paper tends to "fly off" the printer every time unless you have the flimsy support bracket fully extended (given how massive size of the unit is pretty sad it needs this) You can't really leave the arm out as it gets in the way of using control interface, so you end up closing it up and constantly chasing flying paper around the office.
Pretty disappointed with Brother. A3 scanner Wastes ink and therefore my money, support horrible, software horrible
Paper jams galore – It worked well for a short period. Now I can't print anything due to paper jams constantly happening. There's nothing causing the jam, it just doesnt feed through properly. I've tried everything. I mean everything. Brother, you let me down. I would not recommended this to everyone as it is a waste of money and time. Print quality was fine when it could print. It doesn't work as a printer should

1 star - and that is only because it can scan an A3 page – Worst printer I have ever owned, first of all it takes ages to start printing and then when it finally does, it 99% of the time jams the paper or feeds multiple sheets through which results in one page of document being printed on to 3-4 sheets of paper, clear the paper jam and repeat the process, crossing your fingers that it won't happen the… Read more
next time. wastes a LOT of paper and ink. It also seems to use a lot of ink anyway or maybe it's just because I have to print each document multiple times. I strongly advise you to buy a REAL printer for printing and keep this only for a scanner. scans A3 paper jam, paper misfeeds, eats paper, doesn't print and uses a lot of ink
Good printer if paper does not jamb. My printer is 3 months old it has a permanent paper jamb… Read more
Buy it to print nothing else! – I bought this printer/MFC thinking it was a bargain. As an A3 printer and copier it is a bargain, but as an MFC it is not. I have had continual problems trying to scan and fax yet I repeatedly get error messages that tell me there is no connection yet it prints like a dream? I try and get support for this and all I seem to do is get directed to… Read more
internet sites to purchase 3rd party computer programs I just want my problem solved without losing my printer - Arrggh!! great A3 printing and copying Poor support, poor intergration with the PC
100% frustration, 0% printing – I am always getting non-existent paper jam messages. I've also had problems using the manual feed too. I have tried completely re-booting the entire system, including re-installing all device software and updates as well as following each step in the instruction manuals about setting up wireless printer connections. We've even researched other… Read more
help/FAQ sites about fixing the issue and tried some of the recommended solutions.... NOTHING has worked!
I have had this printer for just over 2 years and it has always caused me issues since the first year I got it. As a uni student, it is particularly frustrating when you need to print off uni assignments or lecture notes from home.
Never again Brother, never again. It's slow, but prints well when it works constant problems with paper feeding and paper jams, not worth the effort.
Great unit for the price- very cheap A3 scanner – I wanted an A3 scanner but most A3 scanners range from $500-5,000. After researching this machine I came to the conclusion that it was an average Multifunction printer. But some features swayed me to purchase the unit. these were, A3 scanning, A3 printing. It wasn't until I set it up at home I realized what a bargain I had. It installs on a… Read more
network and/or PC USB. It can scan A3 to USB stick, sd card, across the network to another PC. It can print double sided A3. Print quality is good for standard office style colour presentations- I have not tested photo printing. Extras include - Fax ability - from remote PCs or stand alone. auto doc feeder for fast scanning, printing photos from cameras and usb sticks. Ink costs are comparable with other brands on the market today. All for $278 and I know it can be bought cheaper at other stores. I gave it four stars because I think for photographs my Canon may still be slightly better. Cheap A3 scanner and double sided printer. Nothing so far.
Absolute junk! Do not buy! – I was very excited when we first bought this printer because not only is it A3, but it is also a fax, photocopier, scanner and the print quality isn't too bad. However..... every time I want to print even one meager little page which should take 1 minute, I am mucking around with it for at least one or two hours trying to get it to print. I have… Read more
spent 2 hrs on it tonight and am walking away without a print. Its either 'not online', or the computer won't detect it, or it says it has a paper jam (even though it doesn't and you've followed every prompt to resolve it), it says the ink tank is out (even though it's not) or it won't detect the manual paper feed. I am this close to throwing it out the window out of shear frustration! When it does print it is fine, but the amount of problem solving you have to go though to get it to print is beyond rediculous... and it is every time!!! This is the most unreliable printer I have ever owned. My advice would be to spend the extra money, and get yourself a good one! I will never buy Brother again! print quality not bad, when it actually works Problem after problem, after problem - not worth the stress.
Sounds more like you may have a problem with your PC or Network.. I've had many Brother printers,… Read more (+3 replies)
