Brother XL-2230
15 reviews
Brother basic sewing machine Model XL2230. Easy to use – This is a very good machine for entry level sewers and experienced sewers. I love this little machine that is solid, sews smoothly and quietly. The stitches are perfect, it's quiet and easy to use. I have grand daughters and several similar machines. I believe that most people with complaints don't understand how the basic mechanics of a machine… Read more
works! If I can maintain a few different brand machines with all those problems stated, anyone should be able to. ie: the bobbin has to sit correctly, tension needs to be exact at top and in bobbin, needle must suit fabric and the bobbin area should be cleaned out regularly.
Had it for years – I have had for ten years. Have used on and off over this time. Still sees perfectly. I can tell you why there are bad reviews. I’m confident the person who got there’s from cash converters had an incorrect bobbin, as I had this exact issue once After pulling it out after a few years, fixed instantly when I used one of the bobbins it came with. Excellent machine, have made many projects with it Show details
XL-2230 READ THE MANUAL – This is a great machine if you can get find one. I notice a couple of so , so reviews. I guarantee if you read the instructions , you will not have problems. I sewed and sewed with this machine. At the very least 2o tops ,8 pants . Hint the warranty on this machine is 25 years ! Now what company would take this type of chance ! If you do not read… Read more
the instructions , you are heading for disaster for sure. This is also labeled as a professional machine. READ THE MANUAL !
awesome! – It is really helpful for beginner like me. Just read manual book properly and you can use it. The machine helps me to shorten jeans and skirt. No need go to tailor, just do by yourself. Save money and efficient. So many stitch you can choose. I bought it second hand, very satisfied and useful!
Great for casual use – I'm far from an experienced seamstress, but I do a bit of basic stuff on this machine (hemming pants and curtains, repairing clothes, etc). I've had it for a couple of years now and have had no trouble with it at all. Replaced a few needles but that's it. I've found sometimes that the bottom thread stitches a bit loose but that's probably more to… Read more
do with my incompetence, and not really a major issue with the basic stuff I'm doing. Overall happy with this, and a great beginner or casual user machine.
Ripped Off – I impulse bought my xl 2230 26 stitch brother 2ndhand from Cash Convertors. To be fair, the salesman did offer to demonstrate how well it sewed. Next time they want to show you, take them up on their offer. I wish I had. Haven't sewed for years. I left for work and was away for a week. 2 days after I returned I set it up ready to sew my new… Read more
curtains for my new bedroom. I was horrified and upset when I saw the loose stitching. I persisted for about 30 mins. Everything was inserted and set up according to the manual. Quality thread, yes bobbin inserted the right way up. Nothing but wasted thread. I packed it up ready to return it to the store, only to read the warranty was only for 1 week from the date of purchase.
Don't but cheap, buy a bargain. The look, easy to thread up and the display is very clear. Loose thread, no tension. Therefore it didn't work.
Nothing but trouble – I'm a beginner sewer and learnt on this machine. Whenever I have used it something has always not worked....no kidding....every single time. It has never given me a perfect use. I'm glad it came as a present.....I would be peeved If I actually sent money on this thing....waste of time, money and effort! the light worked most things....not made for very basic use....use it as a door stop!
Great Machine – I have this sewing machine, I am on a very tight budget, picked it up in a sale. I make ALL my childrens clothing, I quilt and I make items for around the home - knits, denim, twill, cottorn, etc and have never had a problem. Have managed to shir, quilt, everything with ease. The only problem I have is the button hole isnt the best - but I dont use it anymore as I have a snap press. Price, ease of use, simple, button hole is average
Not happy – I got my brother for mothers day 2011 and ever since then I've had nothing but trouble with it top stitch always loose catching the fabric. For the money that my partner paid I expected more from my machine in future I will not buy it not even for my daughters Was easy to use Catching fabric
Ok for beginners – I bought this when I was learning to sew, for half price. I'm glad I didn't pay full price. It usually works ok, but it will drop stitches (in the middle of zig zag, it will do a few straight stitches then go back to zig zag), chew cloth, the bobbin thread becomes tangled inside, the foot become loose...I wouldn't buy it again but at half price it was ok to learn on Simple to use Things often went wrong
II bought a brother xl-2230 second hand but I realise that I had the parts where you put the bobbin missing including the boobinholder
Great – Easy to use, awesome machine as I haven't really sewn before it was an excellent beginner machine. I now love sewing with it and will never buy a machine because I think this one does everything I need. Esspecially loving the easy setting maker, don't have to bother with a million setting knobs.
Bad – Overall, this sewing machine might have been cheap to purchase, but waste of money in the end. Wouldn't recommended it! This machine was relatively inexpensive and does all the basic things. I've had this machine for about 2.5 years, and it's now ready to go in the rubbish bin. The bobbin sits very loosely in its compartment, which makes the… Read more
thread tangle easily, and leaves loops as it sews. I now am unable to even get the bobbin thread to be pulled up by the needle, so sewing isnt possible.
cheap and nasty, dont even bother – I am a first time sewer and thought this machine would be perfect for me. I went through so much thread and material that i packed it up and havent brought it out again as i thought it was my inexperiance that was stuffing up the stiches and the bobbin was always tangled.I have since learned that it wasnt me, it was the machine being cheap and… Read more
nasty and you get what you pay for. I am looking forward to sewing again soon. I wont buy another brother. The price i thought was good at the time and it looked basic for new sewers. Bobbin tangle and the stiches were messy and loose. I couldnt fix the tension ever.
My son bought this machine for me as I didn't have one. I am the repair and alteration person in… Read more (+1 reply)

Know better, choose better.
Really bad experience – Same thing happens to us also. Bobbin is loose and thread gets entangled. Spoke to the Brother support. She was very rude. I said why do you make all moving parts made of plastic. She is said it is not meant for heavy stitching or long lasting. She also advised us to purchase some $600 machine. She said it is not meant for sewing dresses etc. It… Read more
is only for certain repairs. If this is the case why can't they call it Cloth repair machine. They should give some meaning ful titles to their products. Brother also get it made from China. I don't know how much they would be paying the manfuacturer and how much margin they are putting in their pockets. The companies are getting very greedy nowdays. Inexpensive Poor quality, doesn't stitch well, useless after 1.5 yr.
Good – If you are just starting out and deciding whether you will like sewing or not then this machine will get the job done. The stitches may not look like a million dollars but that is all on the inside anyway. Minimum servicing and easy to use and very easy to thread. I was an absolutely start from scratch beginner and this machine was fine for me.… Read more
Yes it's loud and likes the chew a bit of material when you aren't holding it correctly but it has done me well for 4 years and I have made everything from curtains to dog beds and baby's clothes. Will occasionally hop and tangle the cotton up - there is usually some warning when this is about to happen like when it isn't feeding the material properly.
