Love this lens – I had the big choice of either getting a 1.2 or 1.4 Canon 50mm lens, after much deliberation I ant ahead with the 1.4 and having had it for a few months now I am more than happy. Brilliant for getting those depth of field shots, crisp images and my go to portrait shot lens now! Well priced, light weight, quiet af system, good to use for both photography and video. not as imposing looking as the bigger F1.2 lens. :)
Not as good as the Sigma – I used one of these lenses for years, until I came across the Sigma 50mm 1.4, then I realised that Canon had once again rode on their name to carry an inferior product. I mean, its a nice piece of glass but $400+ doesn't match what you are getting. The Sigma, although much larger, is much much sharper. Seems to let more light in at 1.4 for some reason too. Can't complain there.
Another problem I have found is with the focusing, it struggles in low light and eventually the motor seems to break for some reason, then you end up with a lens that you have to manually focus or pay a fortune to repair. Pretty good image Overpriced and poor build quality.
This is my go-to lens, couldn't live without it! – I bought this lens over 12 months and since then have used it every day. It is a fantastic portrait lens, fast focusing, crisp and takes excellent photos. I upgraded from the 1.8 and the difference is immense - I would recommend this lens to anyone looking to do photography on a professional level or enthusiasts who want to improve their current equipment. Fantastic, sturdy construction Bit expensive
