Canon Pixma MG6150

It lasted 10 years. I used refilled generic Cartridges, Now printer has blocked. Canon Service advises, to buy a new one – 1 very satisfied with settings of Grayscale or color 2 very satisfied with features/controls, easy to adjust before printing, click on Preferences. 3 The printer worked faultlessly by cable connection, I have not used a Bluetooth connection. 4 Never had a Paper jam with new paper. Avoid printing on to pre-used paper, it may sometimes jam. 5 Had… Read more
excellent color printing results onto printable CDs and DVDs.
The Printer Installation disk includes a Lable print program which is dead-easy to use, for adding text and pictures, any style, size, and color. You can also create covers for a Jewel-box for the front, inside, and back page, the same way as those available for Sale. As this printer is no longer available, Canon informs me there is a new one # TS 9160 with similar features.
The ink drinking machine! – Absolute shocker! Takes ages to get ready to print and in the process uses great amounts of ink. What happens to all this ink? I turn it on and probably five minutes later it might be ready to print. Recently it has decided it will not print black only colour. Changed ink cassettes and performed head cleanings to no avail. Even the print test pattern has no black. On its way to a one way trip to the tip. Canon assist useless.
My life <3 – Colour, scanner, double sided print. All the functionalities I need. Abit slow sometimes to print. the refills are cheap online! It is pretty reliable and the pictures are decent. Not extremely amazing but good enough. I got it second hand from someone else and its still in good condition despite the years (not sure how long they used it for). Show details
Poor Ink Usage – Not impressed with MG6150, Scans Ok and is my main use, but I find printer ink usage is horrendous. Don't print many pages a week, and then mainly b/w or greyscale. But it seems I have to replace cartridges just about every time I want to print! And why do the colour cartridges run out so fast when all I'm printing is b/w or greyscale? And can… Read more
anybody tell me why the Scanner won't work if the ink is low!
Very expensive cartridges, and supplied in opaque black so we can't see how much ink is in the cartridge when new.
Print quality can be good, when all cartridges are new, but deteriorates quickly as cartridge's run down to even half full as per indicators.
Don't think I've had any jams.
This has put me off Canon as a brand altogether – Bought this a couple years ago, I got a couple good photos out of it, but it's otherwise been a waste of money. The scanner never worked, I purchased it for the printer, do I didn't need to use the scanner for quite a while when I bought it. I tried going through Canon's product support, and all I received were copy and paste answers, sometimes… Read more
referring to 3 or 4 different models. After weeks of going nowhere, I just gave up, with a grudge against the Canon brand. Other than that, print quality is OK, not great. Takes ages to print, or turn off/on, and the WIFI never really worked.
Wasteful and inexact – I've had this printer for 3 years - now it's stopped printing in black: no amount of head cleaning or alignment makes any difference. The amount of ink used is phenomenal (and expensive). The colour reproduction in photograph printing is poor; don't think of using this printer if you're serious about photographing artwork or anything with vivid colour.
Good average Multifunction Printer – Does a good job, been reliable for a few years. One problem is that is uses, gobbles up, colour ink, when printing in Black (monochrome), which is wasteful and adds significantly, to the cost of feeding it. I can only assume, that it cleans the print head, regularly, whenever printing, Hope that Canon make sure, that ink used on current model printers, isn't excessive.
All is done to get your money – Besides the high price of the short-lived cartridges, this printer: - uses a lot of your color ink for maintenance each time you print in black (text only), - refuses to print in case any color ink is empty, even if you tick "greyscale". It is possible to override this, but not from the windows driver, rather from the printer itself. - prints… Read more
greyscales with the (color) instead of (grey+black) or black only. What is the point of greyscale then? I could force the print despite a color missing, and all the grey images are blueish because it does not want to use my black ink except for text, instead my printer likes mixing my expensive color cartridges to make a grey colour, even with the "fast printing" ticked.
Really a disappointing vision of engineering.
Stay clear of this one – Nice print, but that's all that it's got going for it. The interface and software is terrible. Forces you to keep all colours full, even if you only want to print/copy in black and white. I bought a full original Canon colour kit for around $160 and as we don't use it regularly, got less than 20 prints out of it before it dried up.
Ink runs out super quick – I do not usually write these reviews but I just wanted to warn people before buying one of these that it uses up the ink really fast, for example I have brought the Magenta cartridge a few weeks back and after printing 20-30 pages at the most, not even full colour images, I am already getting a message that I will need to replace the cartridge soon. I highly recommend looking for an alternative printer that doesn't use the same volume of ink.
unenvironmental printer – The MG6150 uses enormous volumes of ink at every start up. Since Xmas 2011 I have replenished all the cartridges at least twice and only for a handfull of documents - not even one in here. Can't select Black & White print (except for copy). The warm up time is horendous, try leaving it for a minute and print a new page - another warm-up and yet… Read more
more ink wasted.
Wastes ink. Long warm up, another long warm up if the printer is idle for a minutes or so - more ink wasted
No problems – I've been more than happy with this printer. It works perfectly all the time. I've had no problems using non canon branded inks. I have no idea why the first few reviews were so bad. It worked perfectly straight out of the box. The wireless function was very easy to set up. receommended. works as expected.
Worst printer canon has built – This printer does not print properly useless you align print heads everytime you use it and the print quality is very bad. Resetting the software doesnt help. Canon themselves are not interested in the problems l have so if you buy this tool, you are on your own. Not recommended for anyone who likes a hassle free printer. Problems with disc printing, will not colour print properly, maintenance interface is useless, printer has a mind of its own.
I agree, we haven't been able to print properly since we bought it.

Canon produces a great printer/scanner again – My Pixma MP630 stopped printing yellows and I went out to buy another. The MP630 is no longer available so I came home with the MG6150. I didn't really want to because the MG6150 uses 6 later-generation ink tanks and my collection of spare ink tanks would be useless, but I needed to do some urgent print jobs. After a while it became apparent that… Read more · 3
the MG6150 is an improved MP630 in an all-black casing, a good thing because I liked the old printer's output quality.
The jog wheel on the MP630 felt loose but the MG6150 buttons are touch sensitive (I soon learned to not drum my fingers impatiently on the top cover while waiting for the machine to go through its pre-printing routines* before spitting out hard copy). I thought it was missing a lot of buttons until I realised that they are hidden but light up & become visible when needed.
I do mainly graphic-intensive printing (no photos) and the output is every bit as good as that of the MP630 (i.e. excellent). It seems a tad faster and text in the high-speed draft mode is darker making draft mode suitable for general correspondence and hopefully saving some ink.
All of the functions of my old MP630 are there including auto duplex and CD/DVD printing. Duplex printing is slow but apparently that is because of the drying time needed before re-feeding the printout through the rollers.
It has wireless but I'm using the USB connection.
Set-up: others have complained about this but I found it wasn't problematic - it didn't take long to unpack and remove the protective stuff. The print head and ink tanks installed easily and unlike the MP630 they felt reassuringly solid and in place when clicked home. The software took about 15 minutes to instal on my Windows XP machine but it went without a hitch or the need for intervention. I used USB connection not wireless, which would have simplified the set-up process for me though.
Scanning: I haven't used the scanner much but it seems to produce good quality scans.
Software: when I used the scanner I was disappointed that it auto-cropped small images in ridiculous and unacceptable ways and I couldn't adjust it or arrange multiple scans into one file, then I read the manual (yes I'm male!) and discovered that it has version 4.0 of the MP Navigator EX software - it just didn't put a short cut on the desktop when the software was installed.
I was pleased to see optical character recognition included. It is basic and the output appears in Windows NotePad so it isn't formatted - plain text only. However fully featured OCR software is expensive so the bundled OCR is handy and can save a lot of typing, even if you have to format it yourself.
*Speed: print times are generally fast - if you ignore the occasional delay before it starts to print. I complained about this in my review of the MP630 (http://www.productreview.com.au/p/canon-pixma-mp630-advanced.html) because they happen randomly and sometimes seem to go on forever, there is no message on the LCD or software print dialogue box to explain what is happening or how long it will take.
I know that ink printers need occasional pauses for periodic maintenance such as cleaning the nozzles but it still very frustrating because it is unexpected and you aren't informed what's going on.
Build quality: it seems to be better built than the MP630 e.g. the paper tray slides in smoothly where the MP630's tray didn't, so I'm hoping that the occasional paper jams that I suffered with the MP630 are a thing of the past, but time will tell. Good quality output, better build quality than MP630. Occasional irritating pauses before or during printing.
So easy to use – No need to fiddle around to do what you need to, Whether it be print, scan or copy! A perfect addition to any family, student or even grandparent!! Like everything!
Great photo print quality – Found there to be too much packaging. Time to set up printer was tiresome. Not being good with computers I found the instructions hard to follow and the printer is supposed to be wireless. When I came to the section to input the pass phrase I got lost. I could not find an explanation of what the pass phrase was or could be found. In the end… Read more · 1
I had to go out and buy a USB cord. Now it is up and running but did feel quite stressed out by the experience. Quality of photo prints or normal document prints is great. A little bit slow though. Haven't used the scan option yet but look forward to experimenting to utilise the machine to it's full capabilities. I found the price comparable to other brands if not better but you need to shop around for the best price. Looks great too. Too much packaging and too many booklets and paperwork. Have not had to change toners yet but believe they are quite expensive so will need to shop around for the best price for these too.
This is a fantastic printer, absolutely love it – Have always bought Canon products and as my old faithful Canon printer had finally given up on me I then had to start looking for my next one. Had a read of the reviews and was pretty happy with the positive feedback so all I can say is I’m so happy with my new Canon MG6150. Even installed it myself! The colour is good, prints fast and so far I am… Read more
more than happy to have bought it. I love Canon products as they are so reliable. The price did worry me a bit as I thought $299.00 was a bit much, but so far it has been worth it.
Excellent photo shop quality printing, very easy to setup and use – I purchased our Canon printer 3 months ago to replace a previous canon printer that we had had 7 years. Canon know how to make a good printer. It took approx 25 minutes to do the very easy setup process and then the printer was up and running. This printer is an excellent product and has very good colour reproduction with photos. Any photos that… Read more
we want to keep are printed on the canon.
I highly recommend this printer to anybody looking for an affordable and excellent quality printer.
Excellent print quality and great value – Needing to print 6x4 photos for a course I was doing I became very frustrated with my old Canon MP460. It was quick enough and colour photos were acceptable but there was no way I could get a decent black and white photo. Now about to start another photographic course, I decided to bite the bullet and finally decided on a Canon MG6150 after… Read more
reading favourable reviews. It was within my budget and was on sale locally at an excellent price.
While the setup process is tedious with so much plastic protective crap to remove, print head and 6 cartridges to install and a terribly slow installation of software, the end results are very much worth it. I set up the machine for wireless network printing.
Text print speed is amazing and the 'standard' print quality is as close to laser quality as you can get from an inkjet. It was also surprisingly fast.
Duplexing is a lot slower and the text looks grey but should be adequate for drafts.
Photo printing in colour looks stunning. Black & white is also very good with no colour cast. Photo printing speeds are quite slow but this won't be an issue with me. Print quality both for text and photographs is excellent, easy to use once set up, fast text printing, good value for money. Lengthy initial setup, relatively slow photo printing.
Excellent – A great value for money printer that handles a lot of jobs very well, the ink cartridges are not really expensive, and wireless capabilities make it an essential part of my home network. Easy to use, and I love being able to print directly onto CD's and DVD's. It also has a "silent mode" which makes it very quiet when printing a lot of pages. … Read more
Photo prints are fantastic (it's a PIXMA, of course!) especially when using the special photo papers.
The large TFT display is easy to follow (once you get used to it).
Has 6 ink tanks, so replacement cartridges aren't really expensive.
It's wireless too, so works great in the Home Network situation. Rather confusing "properties" section when beginning to print. I find that the "Quick Setup" tab will actually over-ride the "Main" and "Page Setup" tabs - so unless you have "Print Preview" ticked, you end up with a printed page that is not really what you want.
Quality prints, affordable price – Our family had always purchased Canon photo products (cameras, slrs, scanners and printers) so when the time came to upgrade our MP610 it was an easy decision and choice with the MG6150. As with all previous Canon printers the amount of protective packaging is very reassuring if a bit daunting. Since we already had four previous Canon… Read more
printers we were quite used to the lenghtly process of setup and software installation.
our house has a well setup wireless and wired network so this printer will be used for all sorts of printouts (photo, doco etc) scanning and DVD\CD printing from few PC's and laptops around the house.
Overall the network setup was good and easy, the quality of prints are excellent and we are very happy with photos, posters and text documents.
The DVD\CD printing is also of good quality, however we have to ask who was responsible at Canon for changing the startup protocole? Here is our example, you open the Canon DVD\CD cover designer software, design your DVD cover, press print, power on the printer, move the DVD\CD "caddy" to open position to put in the blank printable DVD\CD and what do you get? the printer startup routine asks for the "caddy" to be removed and closed! only to be prompted again in few seconds to insert the "caddy" back in again.
We presume this is to avoid any delays when printing text and documents.
In the end we are very happy with the MG6150 and will definietely purchase Canon printer in the future. Quality, costs and ease of use. Some software aspects and design.
