Don't Buy This Machine – Over-priced, slow and under-performing. I've ownned this machine for just under two years. I bought it when my wonderful Seiko Royal Cap Pro was retired to the holiday house: what a disappointment the Gaggia has been: - The Accademia has two boilers BUT it only has one pump so you can't make coffee and steam at the same time. (the Seiko has two… Read more
pumps). My fault for not appreciating this at the time, I know. However, the machine is still very slow and takes along time to make steam after making coffee. - The internal valves are plastic and the 'multi valve' in mine split and leaked water within the first year. The repairer advised not to use the flavor-intensifier (which increases brew head pressure) to avoid this happening again. - The rinse cycles at start-up and shut-down use so much water that you are forever emptying the drip trays and filling the water tank. - If it runs out of water mid-cycle, it aborts the brew instead of letting you top it up to finish. Same with beans. (The Seiko doesn't do this) - The dregs bin is flimsy and mine is broken: Segafredo refuse to replace it saying it is normal wear and tear. - The software user interface is ridiculous, using a non-intuitive combination of physical and touch-screen controls. Eg: Hot water requires requires a physical button press and then a touch-screen menu selection. - My machine very intermittently refuses to power on. The fix I have discovered is to unplug the machine, wait a minute or two, plug it in and try again. Segafedo want me to send it back to them for three weeks or more (at my expense). If they can't reproduce the fault, my warranty then expires (2 years) and the machine faults again, I will be on my own. - The milk carafe feels fragile and I don't think it will last long. The micro-switches which detect the milk carafe position do not operate positively and the carafe must be jiggled to get them to operate.
On the plus side, it does make a decent coffee when everything is dialed up to max. However, my confidence in the machine's longevity and backup is pretty low. I'll look elsewhere next time.
What a shame! – 5 months old, and it has been in for repairs 2 times. The milk container replaced, o rings and a leak. After only 3 coffees you need to empty driptray. Show details

Great espresso machine but..., – I bought a Gaggia Academia band new. I have owned it for 3 years now. I use Alkaline water so I have no need to use the filter. I descaled it 4 times but only as a precaution. I have no residue at all. This machine is still going strong. There are two draw backs, the milk frothier is made of plastic and I had to buy a replacement because there is… Read more · 1
plastic pieces that will break off regardless of how careful you are. The second drawback is that the grinder and milk frothier is noisy as hell and will wake you partner up. I wish they sell a silencer cover like they have for generators. I’m currently looking for a machine for the RV that’s quieter.
Coffee wholesaler – Having been in the coffee industry for over 30years and sold numerous espresso machines I purchased a Gaggia Academica in 2010, since then I have made over 15000 espresso cups and the unit is still going strong, the best part of the machine is how quiet it grinds and the pressure in frofing the milk. I have never used the auto milk frofer as it is… Read more
always to bubbly and doesn’t have that fine texture. Now that I have sold my business and retired I feel this is the best semi industrial coffee machine on the market. To maintain a good operation continue to decals it monthly and try to use filtered water. Best coffee to buy at a reasonable price BRAZIL blend from ALDI $13.99 kilo. Good coffee making, enjoy.
Gaggia Accademia Unreliable – I have a Gaggia Accademia now for ~ 5 years, the receiver tray started leaking after the 1st year, but I repaired the silly looking "cable-type grommets" in there with glue, as it was flooding my kitchen counter regularly. But now, serious leakage has developed from hot water leaking when the pump is pressing the hot water through the ground… Read more
coffee, so in the end I only get half a cup of coffee and the rest of the hot water is - again - on my kitchen counter.
What a crap design and what an unreliable machinery is this very expensive - if not totally overpriced - Italian over-promoted piece of junk! Does Gaggia have any sensible response to my complaints??? Don't buy this machine, I would recommend to everybody. = Annoyed Customer in Penang, Malaysia =

Disappointed – After owning 2 seaco machines for over 10 years we changed to Gaggia. This machine has been back for repair twice in one year and is going back again due to no steam function. Machine leaks and has caused rust in the machine. My seaco odea go was $899 and lasted many years. Shouldn’t be paying $2400 for a product that can’t last 1 year. Very dissatisfied Show details

Very convenient and easy to use – My previous machine was a SACO Talea Touch Plus which worked very well but began to have a couple of small problems after its long 10 yrs of daily use, so after much research I decided to get a Gaggia. It is very easy to use, makes a great cup of coffee and with the unique aroma coffee settings the machine adjusts itself to different grades of… Read more · 4
coffee after a few cups to perfect the brew from that particular bean, of course you can also adjust the strength of each coffee differently to the preset temps by moving the dial at the front. The machine has 3 coffee settings Expresso; Cafe(medium coffee)`; Cafe` Lungo (long coffee), and a steam or hot water button. Each of these settings can be adjusted to suit. On the right there are all the milk settings, Cappuccino; Latte` Machiatto ( more like what we call a Latte`); Latte` (frothed milk only) and a Clean button for the milk jug. We make a lot of cappuccinos so we do end up having to refill the water tank a little more often than you would if you were only making black coffees as the machine rinses itself after each coffee or frothing of milk. The milk jug is great, we had the silicone tube replaced with a slightly narrower one so it would produce hotter milk. The jug sometimes splatters when making frothed milk but I have learnt that if the jug is freshly cleaned it is fine and if the jug has been in the fridge, I just press the Clean button and it will steam the milk line clean of any residue and then froth milk without splattering. It is very easy to use and to set all the different coffee types to your preference with minimal cleaning day to day. There is also a separate frothing nozzle which will allow you to dispense hot water for teas or froth milk with a little jug. The unit can be set to turn on at a particular time in the morning and then go on standby after the time you have set, e.g., one hour where it will first rinse and then turn itself off. A very efficient and easily to use and maintain coffee machine which makes great coffee! Highly recommended!
Impossible to recommend – Purchased new February 2014. Despite cleaning the brew group regularly and performing all maintenance tasks when prompted and using appropriate products purchased from the supplier, this machine has been extremely unreliable. No problems with any of the coffee functions, but the milk and cleaning functions on the right-hand side of the machine… Read more
have been problematic. In for warranty repair three times for a total of twelve weeks. May 2014 - no milk buttons worked - thermostat replaced. March 2015 - after similar problem over two months valves and boiler replaced. June 2015 valves and carafe replaced. Now milk functions work only intermittently. Not happy!

Extremely Reliable – I have previously reviewed my Gaggia Accademia Coffee Machine and just wanted to give an update 12months or more on. This machine has faithfully made me 2 - 4 cups of coffee everyday since I have owned it (and it was secondhand). Recently, after I neglected to do the full descale (which machine reminds you when needed everytime you turn it on)… Read more · 1
for quite a long period, it refused to finish clean so I turned off machine for a while and tried again.
It did the same thing so I left machine for about 10 days whilst I was away.
On my return I thought I would have to get it serviced but tried to turn on again anyway.
Lo and behold it finished the clean and has been running perfectly ever since. (it needed a holiday too)
I bought this machine after reading reviews that Gaggia was a well made and reliable brand.
I find this to be extremely true and would not hesitate to recommend this machine to anyone.
November 5th 2017 Update: Updating review posted in May 2015
More than 2 years on from previous review, this machine is still going without a hiccup. I neglected to do the clean for quite a while and it didn't complain just kept going, producing great cups of coffee. This machine I purchased second hand (though in new condition) in 2014 and has been going strong ever since.
Highly recommended.
Fantastic Machine! – Straight out of the box this machine required very little adjustment to the settings. The measures of espresso and milk were fantastic for Mach Latte and Cappuccino. Milk temperature was also perfect and I was a little worried as a lot of automatic machines have trouble frothing the milk at a reasonable temperature. The ability to easily adjust… Read more
espresso strength on the fly is also great for individual coffee perfection. Great choice and highly I recommend. Milk frothing was perfect, looks awesome and ease of use. Water level can catch you out if not careful as it is only about 4 cups worth, otherwise PERFECT in every way!
looks superb, good coffee, Have grown to like machine – Eventually bite bullet and bought an automatic machine. Unfortuately after Gaggia Evolution all the instructions and eventual cleaning has reduced my enjoyment of making my own lattes. The carfe spits soya milk over machine and floor, experimented with different milks to prevent. Makes great froth, coffee at touch of buttons Grinds the beans, programmable, 3 froth programmes excellent spits thick soya milk Show reply
