Almost a Land Rover but at a fraction of the price – I had a TD manual for almost 12 years, bought when 2 yrs old with 34,000km and reluctantly traded it recently with 180,000km. I was sorry to see it go. It could climb any highway hill in 5th gear with ease and the few times it was taken off road it was excellent, especially in low ratio. You can get adults in the rear row but it isn't… Read more
comfortable and doesn't leave much room for luggage. We have had seven in (with a large roof box) for 2 weeks around the South Island of NZ. You can get two road bikes in standing up (front wheels off), but interestingly there is more space in the Honda Jazz (don't ask) I replaced it with - I can get two mountain bikes upright in there (again front wheels off).
I had been told by my mechanic for a year or so to 'get rid of it' before it got expensive. I did have a problem with the injectors that cost NZ$ 1,000 to diagnose and fix, so like all common-rail diesels you have to hope it remains reliable as the bills can be big when things go awry.
It was a reluctant sale for me, even though I don't need a 4WD any more and the new car is so much cheaper to run.
Crunching noise when taking corners – Drives well, very limited space in the back two rows.. Could not seat adults in the 3rd row because there is no leg room that being said I have successfully installed 5 car seats and a booster seat on multiple occasions but getting children out of the third row is a challenge in its own right.. I get around 350kms around town and 600 kms if… Read more
highway driving
Drove a 380km round trip and developed a leak in the diff which has resulted in a nasty crunching sound when taking sharp corners
(Like car parks, driveways or u turns)
It grabs half way through the turn followed by a loud crunch
Diff has had all seals replaced and service but the crunching sound seems to be here to stay ... Any ideas what it could be have to do the same trip again next weekend ... Don't particularly want to take the terracan with this issue..
Also if I hit a speed bump at 10-15 kms the car selects 4wd low without the switch moving the light on the dash comes up though..
Purchased with 194000kms now sitting at 199080
Regretting spending $4990 on this car
04 Petrol, manual model, Has served me well – Reluctant purchase, but it has served me well. Got 80k out of my last tyres, and could have pushed them longer, Air-con and heater works excellent, Heaps of room inside. Easy to switch to 4wd on the go. It would need a lift kit to go serious off roading all the time, as the ground clearance isn't real high, but it still handles the rough stuff… Read more
o.k. Stereo sounds pretty good for a car of that age. It has absolutely no wind or road noise which I love. I have taken this car on a few long distance trips on the freeway and the outback, plus round town driving, it has done all this with relative ease. I bought this with 130k on the clock and I've put another120k on it. purchase price, reliable, quiet cabin(minimal road noise), easy to switch to 4wd. Ground clearance.- for serious 4wding, it would need a lift kit. Also the rear two seats are designed for kids.
Jan 2024 Update - Still have this car, has 510000 kms on it now, at about 400000 The gearbox got stuck in 2nd gear, so I put a 2nd hand gbox in from the wreckers, other than that, still going strong.

Best car I have ever owned – I have a 2006 2.9 ltr turbo diesel auto which I bought with 187k on the clock in 2017. In 2018 I used the Terracan to tow our 1.5 tonne camper trailer around Australia for a year. It never missed a beat and tows that weight quite easily. It is now up to 295k and still going strong, I'd love to say I always service it regularly etc but I am a bit… Read more
slack on that, still it keeps going anyway. Only bad issue I had with it was when I had a dirty fuel filter and didn't realise, as soon as the engine got hot it would go into limp mode. $65 for a fuel filter and 5 minutes of my time and that issue was fixed. This is the only car I've owned where random people will come up to me to talk about their Terracan and how much they like it. Very good cars and well worth owning, especially if you can find one with low km's on the clock.
tyres – you must have the same type and depth of tread per axle which is normal, the awd vehicle you must have 4 tyres the same type and tread depth, I hope this helps... I had my terry since 2008 Turbo Diesel SLX demo model and change the oil every 5000 kms with synthetic oil and had no trouble at all. Show details
Lovemyterracan – Hi everyone, i own a 2006 2.9 ltr turbo diesel terracan, which i bought in August 2017. I use it for travel and around town. Last year she had a blown head and needs a new motor just wondering if a 2004 motor will fit. Show details
2005 turbo diesel bought december 2017 – bought this for a steal off gumtree with 150k on the clock at $2300, it did need some work the owner had done some backyard mechanics on it busting an oil seal plate changing the timing belt, to fix this cost another $2000 still good value. since then the only trouble i have had has been the fuel preheat relays, no one knew where they were located… Read more
even the local auto electrician, so services after initial repair have been about $3000 including the tail shaft replacement, fuel preheat element replacement, 2 fuel preheat relays, rear brake pads, idler arm, front shock rubbers, sway bar links, to be fair i have done some very rugged off road usage, it now has about 170k on it fingers crossed nothing major goes wrong like it has for some of the others on here, overall for a turbo deisel off road it is cheap, it has also been great for towing plenty of power
Awful car, COMPLETE LEMON – So we bought a 2004 Hyundai Terracan turbo diesel model from a car yard second hand in March. It is now December and we are having to send the car to the wreckers because we couldn't in good conscience sell it to anyone else. Within three weeks of getting the car, it kept overheating, and nothing they did seem to fix it. Turns out it blew a… Read more
head gasket. So the dealership did the right thing and replaced the engine at their expense.
Now the car is cutting out while driving, sometimes starts and sometimes won't. Been told by a mechanic that it's likely metal in the fuel rail.
Have had so many problems with this car I wish I never bought it. It's clunky, shudders when braking, and is very uncomfortable to drive.
The car has had so many problems that I just don't trust it anymore. I would never ever recommend anyone to buy one. They stopped making these for a reason.
Reliable and cheap – I bought this car from a friend, making me the third owner. It had 185,000 on the clock. He had reliably changed the oil - that was it. I too have changed the oil every 7000kms. It’s now done 230,000kms and is still going like a dream. It drops plenty of oil but nothing out of the ordinary for a car with so many kms Its been 4x4 used and driven… Read more
up the east coast of Aus twice. It’s also the daily drop off for the school run.
Fuel economy is awful, but who cares? If you are buying a v6 terracan for economy then give yourself an uppercut then go buy an echo.
Good bang for bucks – Was our only car, so used for everything. Economical on trips, but when something goes wrong, parts are not easy too buy, and are very expensive. I am in the process of selling it now, as I can not afford to repair and maintain it. The fuel system needs total replacement, costing between $4000 and $5000 dollars, due to picking up some dirty fuel at a servo. Will never buy a diesel car again. Show details
Foxy Wholsalers – Same car yard 2 months later and a $6000 engine repair bill after 8 days of ownership. Suspension totally rebuilt with a delaminating rear tyre thrown in as well. After 10 reliable years with a Sportage I thought this would be the bigger brother and better built. Good points are it’s a big strong car for a reasonable price, bad points are the same… Read more
with any common rail diesel motor - if they break they cost a fortune to repair. Front suspension is the torsion bar style ( like a 1973 Valliant) and wobbles/creaks and generally has to be driven well below the speed limit to remain safe on the road even after $1500 in repairs.
2006 Turbo diesel radiator problems – I've just brought a car off Foxy Wholesalers in Brisbane, drove it 440km in under 19hrs. Rang caryard told me it was my problem. Car is pumping water from the radiator to the overflow, it shut down. Does anyone know if it would be the thermostat or the radiator that is the problem? Show details
2002 petrol model unfortunately was a headache – We wanted to like this car, the size and seating capacity was perfect for us but unfortunately our particular car was nothing but a money pit and needed endless repairs starting with the engine being rebuilt after the car continually went into limp mode whilst driving, the starter motor went, another $1700 motor repair, punctured break line then… Read more
an alternator bearing problem and the transmission was starting to go. We never took it off road but we discovered a fortnight after buying that the car yard who sold it to us sold it in bad condition.

Running 1 lakh plus kms..still running strong without any problems – Hmm nothing seems to be wrong with my Terry. Running 1 lakh plus kms still running strong..replaced clutch plate and brake pads till now.. No issues with the engine.. Sometimes i see check engine light turning on after hitting 140kms speed.. Don't know the reason..might b loose connection problem..dealer said injectors need to be serviced which is common in all the vehicles..gotta replace fuel filters.. Love my Terracan. Show details

dont buy – Had a 2002 terracan since 2006, didnt realise if you do a tyre you have to replace all 4 to keep the same amount of tread on them all. least a new set of tyres every year. Finally on tyres, it uses an odd size, so they are expensive and barely stocked outside major cities. Late 2008 a butterfly came off the manifold and went in the engine, took ages and 3 mechanics to work what was wrong. Hyundai replaced the manifold even though out of warranty. Last year less than 30000kms later the same thing has happened with the manifold that Hyundai supplied. This time it did a piston. Looking to replace the engine and wondered why engines are so expensive and without explaining why I wanted one I was told by the supplier that he cant get enough engines as they drop butterflies of the manifold. comfortable Thirsty and unreliable, expensive to repair
Could be alot better – Radiator problems! After driving upon cooling overflow bottle does not refill radiator, This lead to low level of coolant in radiator. Good – This is a good value for money vehicle. I would recommend the Terracan Highlander to anyone requiring a medium to large 4WD vehicle, especially considering the fact that some 4WD alternatives cost twice the price. services that the alternatives. We purchased our Terracan 2.9 CRDi Highlander from Garry and Warren Smith, Oakleigh Victoria. We would recommend the Sales Department and the Service Department of the Dealership as being professional and good to deal with. Our first long trip was to Maryborough, Queensland. The car performed very well and we got 9.5 Litres to 100km travelling at 110km per hour using Cruise Control. I am not sure how the petrol model economy would perform. The car performed well in heavy rain and on a long stretch of very wet gravel and dirt road. The car was stable when being passed and overtaken by road trains, no sign of being blown around. The Terracan is very well put together, doors fit, no rattles, excellent finish. The car is very quiet at highway speed and has good acceleration. The rear seats (6 and 7 )are not required by everyone and should be an optional extra. We have removed the seats and are left with ugly holes in the otherwise great trim. The clock is unusable in daylight and in the dark. The clock should be moved into the drivers eyeline. The location of cruise control button requires the driver to look away from the road to operate it. This is dangerous and should be moved.I am told ( by owners and by Hyundai) that the improved suspension system should be fitted, especially for towing. This being the case the car should not be sold without it.
Good – We are generally happy with it. Economy good but not as great as I was told or expecting. Getting around 600 kms a tank around town. Not bad tho considering size of vehicle and performance. Not sure about looks. Maybe a bit old fashion but in a way makes it more appealing. Sort of ugly but in an interesting way if that makes sense. Adventure pack… Read more
helps out in looks dept. I'll say it again but needs to learn from the territory in ride comfort and features. Having driven the territory there is no doubt the terracan is the more capable off roader but hold on because standard suspension is a shocker. We will soon upgrade but there goes another few grand and value of vehicle is getting harder to justify.Hyundai have done pretty well and surprised me enough on test drive to buy one. Engine is bloody good for a diesel and I own two Mercedes Vito diesel vans. Beats them hands down. If Hyundai make the changes I have suggested I would consider buying another otherwise its back to Ford!! Great engine with plenty of power. Surprised me for a diesel as very responsive with smooth delivery. Plenty of acceleration for highway overtaking. Very quiet inside cabin, top marks there. Has a solid feel about it. Appears to be well built. Comfy 6 and 7th seat for kids being wide enough teenagers. Very light feel in steering but yes you do get use to it. Suspension lets the vehicle down. Kit should be standard. Wake up Hyundai you have done the same with Sonata. Build a great vehicle but fit inferior suspension. Could have been more creative with storage compartments "lack of". Clock is in arkward position. Side and rear airbags should be an option or standard for Highlander. As should Sat nav and reverse camera. Maybe use ford Territory for 7 seat design and storage ideas. With these would be perfect package. Without, a Diesel Territory will be my next buy. Oh and Headlights not poerful enough. Will be fitting spotties.

Good – In all honesty and fairness to Hyundai and the dealers, All submarines leak, and airoplanes crash, but when the average joe invests a total of $51,000 australian you do not expect to be a testing ground for Hyundai Korea and Hyundai Australia, This is an amazingly good vehicle with the potential of blowing off any other Fwd and Awd vehicles, I… Read more
find that altough I spend a lot of my time driving it , I hate getting out of it, it is so comfortable on long journeys, and the performance from a small deisel is remarkable, I worked for a European Manufacturer and did a lot of european testing of vehicles, and I feel that I know what I am talking about.Hyundai needs to test these vehicles in the same manner that I have, continuous, and constant driving at high speeds, an all roads and inner city driving, If your average retiree buys a car like this ,it will take him 2.5 years to reach the milage that I have done or even longer, the problems that I have suffered would not surface until a very later stage, if at all. as a N.S.W. sales and Marketing Manager, for a Victorian company ,I tested out 16 other makes of 4WD and AWDrives, nothing compared with the Hyundai Highlander, It's ease of accsess, and comfort ,with a flip up back tailgate, and the capacity to take my Machines and consumables in the back, all enclosed in a secure Grey Felted Box, with slide.( removed The Back Seats)I would not hesitate in having another one as a second vehicle, I Luv it, I love the rumble of that little diesel working for me. Go and get one for yourself,I dare you to take a short drive, and be satisfied.TELL the salesman "If you want my Business Give me the keys for a whole Saturday", It will be worth it.It has Comfort, Practicality and a good price tag.The bitter taste from all the previous problems, is now a far cry from the nice feeling I have when I am on the road. look forward and welcome any other comments A great feeling vehicle, previously owned a diesel triton turbo. NO COMPARISON, the higlander is a great deal better than a lot of other vehicles I tested. I average 800klms+per tank, before the light comes on . I cover an area from Ballina to Eden and Bondi to Bourke, I pull up at motels and have a stretch and ready to go again,no fatigue. This vehicle is a great performer on and off road for what I do,If I want to rock hop I'll buy a tractor ,and if I want to swim a car I'll buy a boat.Great highway vehicle with plenty of vision, handling and comfort, yes I agree it needs sat nav, and reversing radar, and a few other little goodies, and Please re locate the cruise button, and more controls on the steering tree. Well !!! 4,000 klms in to owning it I had 2 transfer cases , 2 front propshafts and a diff, replaced,Broke down between Gosford and Berowra NSW ( How embarrassing not to mention the frustration. All happened at 120kls, not nice) This is due to the first propshaft being warped for some reason,I am now up to 50,000 kls, since March (05) and all I 've had go wrong is continuously blowing lights for some reason ( Please someone help) is this common??.I also found out that all tyres have to be rotated on 5,000 kls intervals, because of the constant AWD system you cannot afford to have any difference in the size of the tyres, if for any reason you blow a tyre and have to buy a new one the transfer case will suffer, this is a simmilar set up as the late 90,s and 2001 and 2002 Volvo XC 70's, Hyundai needs to look into this problem , DON"T expect the salesman to tell you, he does'nt know.Do your Homework when buying, and ask questions, lots and lots of them. Fuel filters are extremely High in price, around $232+gst, Oh and you know that you can actually get the parts from somewhere else as long as they are genuine and get your dealer to insatall them.? that's what I do, amasing how much you save, driving light globes are $14.95 a complete sealed unit, cannot just change the globe.a basterd of a job to change the globes, especially the parkers, contact me and I' tell you an easy way of doing it, the technician did'nt even know how to do it.There are other little problems ,like a continuous buzz from the right hand corner of the dash, it took 6 months to trace it, I found out that the innerguard is too close to the outer guard and because of the diesel engine vibrations, it resonates untill 2000 rpm then it disapears, a little piece of boogie board foam fixed it.The holes in the grill are far too big and can cause a lot of problems when small rocks or large flying bugs go through them, problem solved, wire mesh on both top grill and bottom grill, double sided black foam tape and stick the mesh on , a ready made grill protectors. I cannot afford to have problems when I am in the middle of nowhere, I also agree the headlights, are far too dim for my liking, a new set of 4000 series spoties will solve this problem.Accessories are hard to find and not readily available.and the list goes on
Good – To my way of thinking it is horses for courses. This vehicle has good 4WD capability with car like comfort. Consideration must be given to the fact that it is great value for money and a 5 year warranty. My purchase of the CRDi was make after a lot of research. The reliability, cost, warranty and looks sold me. The diesel engine is fuel frugal,… Read more
the trek & tow suspension is a must with towing and the added bonus of air bags pulls loads to the max of 2.5t with comfort. Not being a small person I found it a real plus on comfort ride over long distances. The most important feature to me is the vehicles reliability. The cruise control switch is inconveniently located central of the dash and should be treated as a safety issue having to take your eyes off the road momentarily to search for the location.
The ground clearance minimizes the 4WD capability.
Good – Great Value, well made. we have owned a highlander since 2004 - its travelled over 75k. reliable, competant and probably the best value 4WD on the market with 7 seats. It developed a diff shudder - Hyundai put some additive in - no more problems. Suspension can be a little vague, bottoming out quickly - there is a "trek'n'tow" option available now that by all reports improves it a lot. Show details
Good – Great value for money - very under-rated by most Good tow vehicle for price. Comfort. Driveability. Build quality (freedom from rattles!) Like all v6 4wd's it is heavy on fuel although surprisingly good when towing largish van. Had to have diff centre replaced - only fault at this stage - 36000km Suspension is soft but this is not a problem in general use.
OK – Recent diesel fuel prices certainly aren’t working in Hyundai’s favour, but the really outstanding economy of the force-fed diesel is. Tough Government benchmark testing puts the Terracan’s fuel consumption at a smidge over 10 litres/100kms for both auto and manual models. But the CRDi returned 7.29 litres/100kms during a well-publicised economy… Read more
rally in New Zealand late last year. Our own driving experience tends to back these claims as we drove it all the way to Bateman’s Bay, around and around, then back to Sydney without topping up. Drive it carefully on a long interstate trip and you may get a figure in the high 6s.
Not all the critics, however, are in harmony over the Terracan’s on-road performance. Certainly, it doesn’t share the nimble, near sports handling of Hyundai’s smaller, zippy Tucson or Sante Fe, but for a chunky ‘proper’ 4WD, it’s still acceptable if unremarkable. Our off-road tests were limited to a couple of steep climbs on loose surface and a twisty forest tour. Neither found the limits of the Terracan, but certainly exceeded the most common requests of urban-dwelling 4WDs. Off-the-shelf, the Terracan may not be ready for the Old Telegraph Track, but Hyundai do offer a locally developed, retrofit “Trek’n’Tow” package ($2000) that considerably lifts the off road and towing capability of the stock vehicle, When fitted, it lifts ground clearance by 20mm and boosts tow-ball load mass by 50kg to 250kg.
Styling of the Terracan has also created a certain amount of chin rubbing amongst the motoring press. Terms like “interesting”, “generic”, “dated” and even plain “ugly” have been used in reviews for this poor beast. Sure, it lacks the chic of the European heavy 4WDs like the Touareg, X5 and Cayenne, but is a damn sight smarter than some of the Asian 4WDs I can think of; Daewoo’s hideous Korando for one. Not too proud to take criticism, Hyundai have moved to re-style the Terracan with the latest models. Gone is the buck-toothed, slatted grille of yore, replaced by a more pleasing honeycomb one, along with smoother styling around the bumpers and taillights.
Inside, the Terracan packs seven seats and is replete with the mandatory retractable cup-holders and storage trays, map pockets and electric do-dads. In seven-seat mode, luggage capacity is restricted to what you can put on the roof or carry on your lap, so Mr and Mrs Brady should look to larger vehicles (or a trailer) for family holidays. In five-seat mode, luggage space is recovered but is still limited by the spare wheel stowed under the rear tray – a trade-off for the extra rear-view vision it affords. For all its worth, the Terracan, in either petrol or diesel, isn’t about to wipe Ford, Toyota or Nissan off the map, yet it raises the bar in diesel engine technology and performance that will need to be countered by the big brands to stay ahead. Moderate road manners, stodgey styling
Excellent – We are so happy with our Terracan. We are going to semi retire as soon as possible and will be towing a caravan around OZ and after talking to several grey nomads who also tow vans with this 4X4 will have no doubts about using this unit for that purpose. little diesel is great can cruise at 120 klms all day and still has power to pass slower vehicles, comfortable ride, levels off features well above other brands with much higher price tags and best of all my wife and I both fell in love when we saw it and took it for a test drive. Excellent – Overall, a great vehicle. This my 4th 4x4 and the best by far. The motor is strong and efficent, the size is right for town and bush trips and the basic vehicle is simple neat contruction and very strong. diesel in Feb 07, and to date Aug 2007 have completed 44,000 kms. This includes about 2,000 off road and the rest mainly on bitumen and some dirt tracks.
The performance has been most satisfying. There is plenty of power and I find the engine and gearbox are very flexible for all driving situations.
It has been most impressive off road, with no changes to the vehicle at all, leaving many other vehicles behind over tough terrain. The gearing in low range is quite low and it allows very steady progress when required.
The vehicle is also very economical, and is just as efficient off road, a situation where many other 4x4's can be thirsty.
I also use it to tow a 1000kg caravan with no problems at all. The rear diff centre on mine has been replaced, but there was no drama with this process. Such a change to Nissan who I have previously dealt with.
Nothing else I would really change. Maybe the the exterior is a little problematic, but in the overall swim of things, makes a clear statement about identity, which is more than many vehiclwes do at present.
Excellent – I think it is a great vehicle from Hyundai's off road collection its really easy to drive its quiet it illiminates outside noise Its a very comfortable driveing car It could of been a little better offroad
Terrible – I was unfortunate to have driven one of these trucks, and can say that it handles like a hippo out of water. The engine shakes the whol cabin and thats on a good road, on dirt roads it feels as if there is no suspension and the poor build quality inside means there is places where you can hurt yourself from all this bumping arround. also the… Read more
internal build quality is rather poor, with many fittings not flush and the materials used of very low auality - it just feels poor. Never again. Will cost you a lo at the bowser. Crash protection is poor.

Excellent – Economical, value for money. The Terracan has a powerful Turbo diesel that exceeds performance of larger 4WDs. I recommend Terracan to anyone. Price is much cheaper than Prado or Pajero. Good fuel economy. Comfort and low cabin noise a nice surprise. CD player poor quality sound. Ground clearance not the best when 4WD. Exterior styling is a bit off-putting.
Good – I believe the Terracan is a very under rated 4WD. It is a very capable offroad vehicle and is quite a joy to use on bitumen. Not to mention value for money. Excellent fuel economy. CRDi motor very capable on, offroad and towing. Very quite diesel motor. Soft front suspension.
Good – We have had our Terracan CRDi for 78,000kms and have had no major problems. Once you get over the cheap grey interior and the vague steering you begin to find more and more strengths. It has turned out to be a fantastic tow vehicle for our 1500kg Caravan. The fuel economy of the diesel is astounding. We regularly achieve 9.5L/100km on trips with 2… Read more
Adults 4 kids on board, while we have achieved 14.5L consistently when towing our caravan.Worst seen with van was 18L/100km in mountain country. The ride improves dramatically with a van or boat on the back. We have done some 4wd trips and it is quite capable off-road, although road biased tyres limit your adventure. Very robust and economical family wagon, and $10,000 cheaper than rivals! Fuel Economy (CRDi model), Towing Ability, Easy to Drive, 4WD ability is reasonable. Cheap Interior, Rear suspension skips on corrugations, vague steering on straight roads, Airconditiong struggles with Aussie summers (Heating is great however), lack of luggage space when rear sets down.
Good – Great overall package for what you pay. Maybe not for the serious offroad enthusiast, but for sand and mud it's more than capable to get you to the good fishing spots. The V6 (petrol) motor is grunty enough to get you through the bog but clearance is an issue. Saying that for the money you save you can buy an aftermarket suspension kit and bigger… Read more · 1
