A fantastic day bed except for the assembly challenges – Please Note: This review will be based on several sub-heading categories to allow readers to skip using their smart mobile devices or computer systems to jump to sections where the information matters most. Headings - Introduction - Products - Pros Vs Cons - Final Thoughts INTRODUCTION My loving partner initially wanted a sofa bed to be… Read more ·  1

purchased and then later placed into one of the bedrooms. However when looking at the study and the lounge; they each had a couch. Instead after some research and convincing, I managed to get this product and also to have it delivered because the dimensions of the boxes did not fit our Honda CRV.

I bought this as a bundled package with two mattresses which did not look all that comfortable by the time you rip the heavily wrapped plastic off holding them together.

PRODUCTS The HEMNES range; I have personally bought this specific series over the last decade. And I have likened to the styling of this series with a range of products that I have purchased along with this Day-Bed with several book shelves and several shoe shelves also.

However, what I discovered when putting this together, was that the manual itself was alarmingly annoying. And for me, I did find it difficult and did make mistakes twice putting it together. Nevertheless through perseverance, I did manage to get it done. I just hope no one in the future asks me to put it apart; its definitely going to stay where it is for a very long time.

PROS - It is a day bed, it does what it does - Ample storage if not using the bottom part as an additional bed - Stylish and aesthetically pleasing for us especially that it matches our plantation shutters in the room of where it sits - suits one or two people easily

CONS - Manual hard to read at times - Not good for rooms that are not large despite measuring it prior to assembly - The two mattresses that I got as part of the bundle is... not that good or convincing

FINAL THOUGHTS I'm rather biased as I do like the HEMNES series... a great deal. As a day bed, it does the job. To put it together, well, I rather pay something else to do it frankly. As much as I would kid myself into believing that its just LEGO pieces you're assembling from packed furniture.

Perfect for our needs – I'm a single mom with a 10yr old boy. I chose this bed because occasionally he has a friend sleep over, but otherwise there is no room for 2 beds. I elected to get this over a bunk bed, and am so happy that I did. We have hardwood floors, so I have no issues rolling the bottom out. The extra storage provided by the drawers is great, and the bed… Read more

itself is very sturdy. Set up is indeed a big job, but if you're familiar with other IKEA furniture (I've already built book cases and desks) and you approach it carefully, it's not difficult. I did it myself with a little help from my son, but it does take several hours and is best split over 2 shorter work sessions rather than one long one, in my opinion. Just watch the diagrams very carefully and work systematically. The trundle portion seems ideal for a child but I suspect it is less suitable for an adult, unless you keep some pre-cut, fitted plywood handy to put on top of the slats. Only drawback is that you can't seem to store the 2nd mattress inside while it is tucked in, so you need to have room to store the 2nd mattress somewhere else.

We liked it so much, we bought a second one! – We bought one of these beds for my daughter because her room was rather small. With the 3 huge drawers, we did not need to put a chest of drawers in the room, which would have been crowded. Plus, there was just enough room in there to open the bed up whenever we had a friend or two sleep over. We have two mattresses that we bought from Ikea.… Read more

When it's a daybed, the mattresses stack one upon the other, and a single, standard twin sheet fits over both of them perfectly (as I understand, we do not have the thinnest mattress, but I don't know if we have the thickest one, or a medium sized one). When it is pulled out, we lay the mattresses side by side, in the same direction as the daybed. We use two standard twin sheets to cover them because length-wise they are perfect, but they are a little baggy on the single width mattresses, which are thinner than regular matresses, so we just tuck the baggy parts under and it has never been a problem so far. My daughter loves the bed and it's very comfortable to sleep on.

In fact, I have 3 girls. At some point, the younger two decided to room together. We put them in a slightly bigger secondary bedroom, got rid of the long dresser, and purchased another one of these beds. Since they sit against the wall, we were able to put the beds on two consecutive walls, with just enough distance between them so that both can be pulled out at the same time. It is fantastic! We've had sleepovers with 5-6 children and everyone was comfortable. The multi functionality of this bed is amazing.

In fact, one of my parents recently moved in with us and took my oldest daughter's bedroom, which is next to the bathroom. She has been sharing a room with her 2 sisters for a few weeks, but that front bedroom is still empty, so we are planning on buying a 3rd one of these to put back in that small room for her. I haven't encoutered any downside yet, except that sleeping side by side, one person is "locked in" next to the wall. The kids have slept in both directions when the bed is open. I've never gotten any complaints from them about the ridge, but I haven't ever tried it as a full- sized adult.

Solid bed – I am not a DIY person but these instructions were amazing, step by step and pictures and all screws in numbered bags, my son in law took 2 hrs on his own and I even done the draws and all tracks, not used the bed yet, hence the 4 stars but it seems solid and wood is lovely and chunky. Never do reviews but had to this time. Well done ikea xx Show details

stylish but a bit hard – We purchased this as a spare bed, but it became a regular use bed. The bed is beautifully constructed and good quality and stylish. The mattresses are less so. They are quite thin and hard. There is an option to purchase thicker mattresses, but if you ever use it as a day bed and have to stack the thicker mattresses, it will be to high. Show details

Slopes! – There is a slight but definite slope as the slats are designed to be slightly higher at the back to allow the bed to go in and out. You can see this with a spirit level. Makes you feel like you are rolling out of bed. Show details

Designed to be looked at, not used – Had the bed just over a year before I noticed some sagging in the middle. Removed the mattresses to find that all the screws had worn and fallen out and the frame had completely come apart. The wheels on the drawer had also twisted and fallen apart. It was put together perfectly well and I'm by no means too heavy, it's just poorly design for… Read more

frequent use. The pull out section is not designed to hold weight properly. Clearly only effective as a single bed or decor.

This will break due to poor design – The bed lasted a year of weekend use. The problem starts with how you pull the bed out. If you don't get the exact middle every time it looses at the back. This becomes more problematic over time as the wheels aren't really designed to be pulled on the carpet. This action twists the main support which will eventually pop out leading to the screws… Read more

(attached to the back of the drawers) to eventually fail and rip out (destroying the bed). It looks pretty but because the wheels are crap and the main support area isn't thick nor actual wood the whole thing will break.

Style over function.

Really good day bed – I have had this for a while and from the really easy install to how it has held up over the years I would highly recommend it to anyone on the look out.

Best one in the market – Since we just moved in from overseas, we had to buy a bed and also a sofa which we put in our living room. So, we searched everywhere and examined thoroughly every option, to be both chic and comfortable for longterm use. This is the one. You sleep on a bed with a firm mattress and sit on a double mattress which is nicely designed. The hardest part is the assembly though, which took me 5 to 6 hours in 2 days and that is why I gave it a 4 star. Show details

Awful – this bed is absolutely terrible, it looks great when it’s first put together ( which takes ages! ) however, drawers broke straight away and i can’t even sleep on it anymore! The two compartments just came apart!! absolutely awful quality, having to buy a new bed now as i am unable to sleep on this bed anymore.  Show details

Great all rounder – Love love love this piece. I was lucky enough to find one in the as is section in the Dove Grey colour. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Purchased the harder memory foam mattresses to go with it. Looks great all compact in the daybed setup in my home office, easily converts to a King Bed.  Show details

Ikea Day bed - really good – Takes ages to build but definitely worth it. We have it in our spare room, and use it for guests. I have bought a foam mattress topper to put on top as the thin mattresses didn't cut it. Just have to store it when the topper isn't being used. Haven't had any issues with the slats. However I have pulled the trundle out too far a couple of times, but I'm not sure if this has happened because I missed something when building it!!  Show details

Worst bed ever – This bed started out as a great. Priced right although assembly was necessary. It's a trundle and the slats are not sturdy. Looks great! – Love this day bed. Bought it for my toddler and so glad we did! Great for a day bed or child's bed. Had a couple stay in it 2 weeks and it was fine but any longer and it would of been too hard. Perfect for a wee one. And will come in handy when she's old enough for sleep overs with friends. It's huge when extended!  Show details

Solid piece of furniture. Time consuming, but not complicated. Electric screwdriver a must!!! – The bed is solid. It took 3hrs to build. I followed the instructions with no difficulty. The only head scratching moment was when I noticed that the hinges were turned opposite to each other, but that is to allow the drawer slates to slot in to each other. The bed is heavy. I cannot move it without removing the drawer first so bare that in… Read more

mind when choosing the location prior to building.

I have built a number of IKEA pieces and this was the first time using an electric screwdriver. It saved my hands from blisters, and loads of time. I also feel that the bed is stronger as a result.

I would recommend the Malfors 12" matresses, rather than the 10" mattress it comes with. It's an extra €20 each but worth in the long run.

I built it alone. There were times when an extra hand would have helped, obviously, but its more than possible.

Functional bed for sunroom/guest bedroom – This daybed was a pain in the neck to start assembling at 9:30pm one night after a long day at Ikea - our fault. Allow plenty of time to assemble this and it will keep sturdy for many years. Fairly easy to slide out to extend bed so long as your carpet is not too thick. Storage in the drawers is brilliant - great for storing spare sheets/blankets… Read more

etc. As mentioned in other reviews, the slats are very weak and just crawling across the bed can cause a slat to break - gives the guests quite a scare! Ikea have been good about it each time we have had to return a broken one for a replacement. Perhaps a thicker mattress would stop this from occurring but we just purchased the two fairly thin foam mattresses that were on the display bed. Lovely looking frame that suits any decor.

great if you have a small space – I bought this bed frame about one and half years ago. It still looks great. I especially love its drawers because my unit is small and I have a lot of stuff and no place to put them!!!! this bed frame really helped me with organising the extra sheets and etc. It is just a little small to sleep is you need a lot of space otherwise great product.  Show details

Perfect for lounging around on with lots of pillows or a good nights sleep . Lots of wonderful stora – Assembly took approximately five hours. If you used a power drill it would be faster but it is not necessary. Easy to follow instructions . Just take your time and look each set of instructions over carefully . A wonderful product . We were totally satisfied .  Show details

Very weak slats – Shockingly weak slate tiles have always replaced them without quibble but it's a real pain having to go to Southampton every time they break. Ok but slats poor quality – I put the bed together by myself and it did take about 2 hours. The bed itself is great for a 30kg 9 year old but I doubt it's useful for any adult as the slats broke on the trundle section on the first night after an adult sat on it. She didn't jump on it or bounce or even land heavily. She just sat down and it broke in half. In the three weeks… Read more

I've had it 2 more slats have snapped from having a 15 year old boy kneel on it to get in bed.

It may not be the most expensive bed but I expected far more from an IKEA product. I will be asking for new slats free of charge.

Good as a single bed, for single person, needing storage in small room – I bought this when I was a student, and it worked well for 5 years. I bought it used from someone who had started putting it together for his child and given up (because the instructions are a bit vague and the construction will take an entire afternoon). You will need to buy many extra little screws and attachment hardware pieces so that the bed… Read more

will actually feel stable when you use it. It is stable enough left as a single bed with the 3 large storage drawers underneath, but I do NOT recommend pulling it out to use a King bed with your partner. The slats will break. If you intend to keep it extended as a king bed, you will need to cut a custom made board to place over the slats to make it stable. The 3 storage drawers will hold a great deal of clothing.

Be aware takes a long time to construct! – Took two competent diyers 7 hours to construct. Involved having to lie on the floor to screw parts together from underneath! lovely bed but rubbish trundle – Can't pull it out on carpet, bit rubbish for ikea really! Should be at least an inch off the floor. I'll either have to put wheels on the bed and raise the pull out bed somehow or put a piece of ply under the wheels of the pull out bed so it will slide easily. I duno!

A Hemnes triumph! – We bought the bed frame with two Malfors foam mattresses. It has worked perfectly for us. The thing to watch out for is to avoid using mattresses that are too thick or too big and beddings that are not a good fit.

Very clever. We are about to buy a 3rd one! – The concept is very clever. We bought our first one about 6 years ago. Whilst the stats can break when the bed is pulled out to be king size, we got around this by putting a piece of ply under the mattress. Ikea also replaced all slats that had broken, at no cost. kids are sick and you need to be near them at night, when guests come to stay and when the kids have friends for sleep overs. The storage is also fantastic. The bed is a bit hard to pull out on carpet, but I just get one of the kids to give me a hand. With a person on each end, it is not too hard. When the toddler comes out of his cot, he too will have a Hemnes day bed. You are paying for the design....not the quality.
