  Touring 2019

It's OK if you want something light – Just hired the Jayco Eagle Touring 2018 for 2 weeks to travel 2000km in QLD - from the Coast to the outback, and back again. Here' are my thoughts: PROS: - Lightweight, making it very easy to tow and saving on fuel (only 2L/100km extra) - Spacious inside for what it is. Can easily fit 4 humans. - Quite dark inside when all curtains are closed up… Read more

- Handy for storing extra suitcases and other bits and bobs inside when towing.

CONS: - Can't handle windy conditions at all. The canvas flaps around, has straps hitting the roof and is extremely noisy. - It's painful to setup and pack up in wet weather. We ended up hiring a motel on 2 windy and stormy nights of our trip knowing the Jayco would be too much hassle and wouldn't handle conditions well. - Jayco quality build - which is pretty crap. Little things were constantly breaking, like door knobs, holes in canvas, scratches on the plywood from the support poles, etc. - It's a fair bit of work to setup and pack down - around half an hour or so each time. No different to camping with a tent. - You have to use a fair bit of muscle to do things. It's more of a 2-person job. - The bed mattresses are extremely hard and uncomfortable - sore hips and poor sleep every night. - The Dometic fridge worked good on gas, but was useless on electricity.

Overall, I'm glad I got to experience the Jayco Eagle as a hired van, rather than buying. It confirmed for me that I would want to pay that little extra to get a full caravan. While it's small and easy to move around, it's too much money to pay to still have to do so much work when you arrive at a campsite...and to only use in fine weather. I would not buy this van and would much rather spend elsewhere on something bigger and better quality.

Absolute disgrace – Brand new 2020 eagle outback have had it for 7 months and nothing but issue after issue. Two seperate leaks in the roof. Silicone/sealant coming apart from joins. Cracked corner caps on the roof. Have contacted jayco with several emails and photos and receive no response. More than happy to take money for a service and claim that all warranty stuff has been lodged but they are awaiting approval. Absolutely disgraceful.  Show details

Jayco Dealers are hopeless and Jayco are thieves – Jayco vans are rubbish. Dont be fooled. The dealers are not interested in fixing problems they make you wait until you pay for a warranty service to fix their problems. It is a rort and the ACCC should do something about it. I complained to Jayco head office refused to take calls and they hide behind emails. Finally I got Jayco head office to do… Read more

the service for $500 because they dont want to upset dealers with a cheaper service price. I marked everything before the service and nothing was touched. I embarrassed them so badly they refunded the money. I would never take my van back to any of them. I have slowly been upgrading the problems myself as I can because I am a qualified trades person not a child with a pop rivet gun.

Jayco newcastle – We brought a Jayco eagle earlier in the year had a few issues but my main issues is the service that you get from the service department at Jayco Newcastle on our 1st trip away had a issues with the fridge got to them look at it that was but while it was at the dealership for the fridge issue I ask them to look at a few annex walls and some… Read more

other things as we were going away again before the 3 month service but got told can only look at them in the 3 month service must be to hard to pull out the annex walls to I guess to have look. so when I booked it in at the 3 month service they need the van for a couple of days I told them no problem but I cant get back to the weekend to pick it up as I live up in the hunter Valley it was then organise to pick on the Saturday morning I got a call on the Friday to say I cant pick it up on the weekend so it was organised for the following weekend, this is where I get angry I ring on the Friday just to confirm the pick up I get a no one will be here for you to pick it up needs to be picked up during the week mind you the person who is telling me this is the same person who organised for to pick it up on the weekend so after some a heated discussion that this was organised last week they then organise a service tech to come in on the Saturday morning for me to pick it up and I was made to feel guilty that a some one from the service center was coming in on his own time for me to get my van. but then to my surprise it was left up to the guys in the sales department to help me, why lie I sent a email to there manager and all I can say we will agree to disagree on there after sale service, there sale team are great. but my van will not be going back to them. the fridge issues is still not fixed to a standard that think it should be have been told by a Jayco service tech that I should install a fan to the vent to extract the heat as you cant leave anything on the bench as it is way to hot I know my next van will be from Jayco Newcastle I know that much. and they will nor see my Van again if I can help it.

Nice Camper - light, easy to tow. not a family camper – 2005 Jayco Eagle Outback I bought my camper approx. 5years ago, i have young family (3 kids under 5). Its nice and easy to tow around I found that the older Jayco outbacks (campers) are built better then the new, as silly as it sounds - must be the simplistic no fuss electric brakes are also a great relief when towing with a smaller SUV, with the… Read more

family in the car however, i wouldn't recommend it as a caravan park camper - its more just for off-road parts that are in-accessible for larger caravans or if your on a budget i eventually sold my camper and upgraded to a 2012 Jayco expanda - shower/toilet/etc. and its fantastic in comparison!

Roof won't wind down – I have a problem with my Eagle Outback 2004 > I can wind it up fine, but when I wind it down it only goes a short way down and then the handle mechanism becomes totally loose (no tension at all the and handle winds very loose) and the roof remains up (approximately 80% of its full opening height). Any ideas what the problem is?

Great before buying a van – Did our apprenticeship in a soft floor before upgrading to the 2015 Eagle Outback. Half the set up time of a soft floor (approx 30 minutes if not using bed flyes) and a lot less physically demanding. Easy to tow and place and excellent ground clearance. Able to leave beds made even with a pillow top on the mattress. No leaks or water issues when… Read more

bed flyes are out. Easy to clean and maintain. Small issues with curtain hooks and "U" weld detaching which were fixed by very good Townsville dealer. Roof is a little noisy under rain. Maintained value well after 14 months of faithful service. If you don't treat it like an off-road soft floor camper, it's a great way to cut your teeth before moving to a van (towing, parking, placing, cleaning, stocking, equipment, knick knacks).

Jayco eagle rubbish – Canvas leaks on bed ends wetting all bedding, leaks along all stitching holes despite being 'weathered' as instructed. Plastic parts are not uv stabilised so break within in 12 months.

Recently purchased but recalled – I'm in the same boat. Purchased an eagle but can't take delivery due to the recall. I'm being told the parts are coming but who knows when they will actually arrive and if they are the right ones (recall 1 vs 2). So annoying! Totally taken the shine off getting my van.

There are better campers out there – Camper has the ability to be good value but the workmanship on the van and the aftersales service is terrible. Such as missing items, scratches on new bench, super glue used to glue down screw caps and chipped melamine, a poorly fitted weather strip that caused a leak on the first camping trip. A poorly wired 12 pin plug that caused a short and… Read more

2012 outback camper van update – In 2014 we purchased our 2012 Jayco Eagle outback as second owners from a family in Blackwater. This is my second part to a review I've written previously. We used it on several occasions for weekends with family, before we took it on our big trip to Western Australia. We fitted 160 watts of solar panels to the roof in anticipation of free camping… Read more

along the way. We also fitted a Stone Stomper, a great device recommended to us by experienced off road camper friends, which attaches to the car and the van as a method of preventing stone damage to the van and to prevent the back window of the car from rocks ricocheting from the van to the car window. Our van was packed with supplies and comforts including 2 x 75 litre tanks filled with water in preparation for all contingencies as we left Brisbane in August for Charleville, the next day to Ilfracombe/Longreach. One of the van brakes had been squeaking, so we pulled wheels off to find the problem and found grease from the bearing had leaked and ended up between the magnet and the drum which caused friction. Everything now working fine we headed for Boulia, the last sealed road we would see for a while. We were surprised to see ongoing sections of bitumen being laid just out of Boulia. The Donohue Hwy was in pretty good but amazingly dusty in parts, which brought us our next problem DUST. We were surprised to see so much dust had made its way between the front roof seal and covered the bed and lounge. We had dust through the boot and vents, a bit of a nightmare. We used plastic garbage bags to weave through the bed, lounge and roof seal to try and control some of the dust, with good results. We could not close the roof to make the roof and body seal any better no matter what we did. The Plenty was a little rougher but still the van towed well. When we arrived in Alice Springs we visited the local Bunnings to buy new Velcro to replace the Velcro on the top half of the door. We also bought several types of sealing products to try to control the dust. It's amazing where it finds its way in. After a couple of days exploring and enjoying Uluru and visiting the Olgas we once again left sealed roads for more dirt and headed for Docker River, this section of road is the worst highway we have ever experienced, worse than the old Nullarbor when it was at its worst before it was sealed, and still the van held up well, things got shaken around pretty well. The smoothest part of the road was to have one wheel travel in the water table and one on the gravel mound, slow going, then once we hit the West Australian border it was like entering another country, well formed dirt road better than some bitumen roads we've traveled. We finally made it to Perth without any problems, we didn't even lose screws, our cutlery draw is loose from all the shaking and bouncing but is an easy fix. We noticed that the rear roof corners have started to crack, something we will have to look at but not a major concern at this stage. Our trip back to Brisbane was on sealed roads all the way and without mishap. After all this van went through with rough dusty roads and to come out with only dust as an issue, I would recommend this van to anyone very happy just wish I could sort out the dust issue and I'm sure we will with a little more effort and crawling around, before we go on anymore unsealed road!

Great size, great look, great storage! – After reading all the horrible reviews I was hesitant to buy a Jayco but we love our Eagle Outback! and relax. It feels like you're up in a treehouse when relaxing in the bed ends- beautiful breezes through the windows that make it so cool. The annex is a perfect size and the whole set up is easy to erect for short trips. We've overheard so many fellow campers discussing how good it looks as they walk past, some even driving past to stop and show their wives.

Easter was pretty wet and rained most nights, but we didn't have any dramas. The price point is a basic entry point into the world of caravaning, but we are extremely happy with our purchase and are currently booking more trips for Christmas and even next Easter. WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND TO OTHERS!

Jayco Eagle 2013 touring model - Very Happy :) – We purchased this 2013 pre-loved model but in as new condition from a reputable dealer here in Melbourne and love the features and space after upgrading from an 80's Dove. The camper is reasonably quick to set up - approx 30mins from parking and levelling to 1st drinks and becoming acquainted with the surroundings for the night. This includes… Read more

bed flys and awning.

The front boot is a great feature and holds our 3 camp chairs, pegs, ropes, hoses, buckets and of course the gas bottle. The boot door feels a little flimsy but secure.

Inside the camper is spacious enought for our needs. - just the 3 of us. Thetford fridge works well once you've had the fridge on for a day at home, but remember you need to have the roof UP as the fridge does get quite hot running off mains power.

Our camper came "battery ready" and we've been told a battery kit costs about $80 - the deep cycle battery is what costs the $300 or so dollars.

We haven't taken the camper for a long haul yet but have had a few nights away no further than 2-3 hrs from Melbourne.

It tows great behind our nissan XTrail 2010 petrol model - not the fastest tug on the road but it gets us there. The electric brakes work great and I don't know how I ever towed without them before. Tyres are filled with nitrogen and I cannot see the benefit of that, so if we ever have a flat I'll be using the nitrogen/oxygen mix (air) that has serviced me well for years.

The interior is light weight and would not be as hard wearing as kitchen cabinetry at home, but if looked after will service our needs for many a year. Seats are comfortable and layout with the club lounge is great It sure beats a tent on the ground but it's not that type of roughing it like we used to do when younger.

Plenty of nooks and crannys for hiding the essentials but you'll find you need to lift the cushions up to get to other places to store items you may not always need like a brush and pan.

LED lighting is great - the blue led night lights are a great feature albeit bright and hard to sleep under.

So all up we're happy with our Jayco Eagle 2013 Camper and would recommend Jayco to anyone looking to get into campers.

Jayco Eagle not bad - after a shakedown cruise – We bought a new Jayco Eagle Outback in early 2009, and have been generally happy with it. We have travelled all over Australia, including some pretty rough roads, and have spent about 400 nights in the van. From talking to other Jayco owners, we have concluded that quality control is not all that good when the units leave the factory. On our first… Read more

night out on a 15,000 km trip, 400 km from home in Melbourne, we found the sink drain wasn't hooked up properly, resulting in everything stored under the sink getting soaking wet. Also, in our first 1000 km various screws and nuts fell off. Jayco offer a free first 1000 km service, and we had that done in Adelaide. The serviceman there told us lots of things the sales person in Melbourne did not tell us! After that, there were no major troubles, but I did ( and still do) regularly go over the screws and nuts with a screwdriver and spanners - every day if travelling on rough roads. With careful driving, the unit managed the Gibb River Road, though we had to replace a shock at the end. I strongly advise if you buy a new Jayco to do a shakedown cruise not too far from home, so that you can take the unit back to the dealer if necessary. But overall, now that we know the beast, we're quite happy with it.

Great starter camper that you won't lose money on – We went from the tent to an Eagle Outback. We bought a used 2008 model and had it for about a year. Used it every chance we got then upgraded to an Expanda. I had no dramas with it. Pretty basic set up - bed flys, battery, water pump. It had the Fiamma wind out awning which made my life a lot easier too. Sick of poles and pegs. I had the main… Read more

set up down to 6 mins (then a bit more to set it up completely including having a beer in the hand).

The design for the eagle suited us as there was plenty of room to spread out. We didn't feel like we were sitting in each others laps.

Some other people were complaining about storage - well yeh, its a camper trailer not the Taj Mahal. Buy some boxes.

Don't have much else to say really except that I lost $0 on it in 12 months and I sold it within 2 weeks of advertising. I just had to pay $170 rego and insurance and that was it for the year! Spacious layout, easy to set up, light to tow. Awesome resale. Would buy another one. Highly recommend. The Swan is very similar too. Recommend these layouts for people with 2 or more kids. Some stitching starting to let go (from previous owners), near bed end. A couple of sliding drawers not straight, but not worth complaining about.

Ultimate family holiday comfort on a budget – We have a 2004 Eagle Outback and have dragged it to some pretty remote locations without any major dramas. We bought it after the wife said she wasn't going to sleep in a tent anymore. This is a great compromise, all the luxury, and still camping under canvas. The last 7 years we have spent 3 or 4 weeks away with up to 5 kids over Christmas,… Read more ·  1

and it is our ultimate getaway...... we love it

Its not perfect, Jayco quality control is marginal, but nothing that can not be attended to by the average handyman.

Ours is fitted up for free camping with solar and batteries, and can remain independent indefinitely. Luxury camping...... on a budget Jayco quality control really needs a serious overview.

Outback by name only - unless you're just keeping it out the back of your house – I own a 2005 Jayco Eagle Outback since new for a number of years. Unfortunately, for an 'outback' camper, many quality components were lacking - things that were only obvious once you own and use it. Very quickly, we experienced Laminex lifting, the pop-reverting of hinges in plywood defied belief since they simply pop out and require replacing… Read more

with screws (as should have been used in the first place), plastic bracing was used in various interior areas that have mostly broke within very short time frame, and very substandard drawer design without bracing meant that the weight of the large draw broke the track early on. Furthermore, the inserts within the channels that the beds roll on always slide out and have already worn a hole in the canvas (we continue to experiment with different glues to hold them in place), the automatic light disconnector mounted on the roof has broken off so many times that I have thrown it away after repeatedly fixing it, the wiring in the stove required repair when two separate wires disconnected (one with a substandard crimp), the gas regulator stopped working (though was replaced under warranty), the door latch literally fell apart (also replaced under warranty, which the replacement one was checked while at the dealer before accepting it to also find it was faulty!!), and the clips used to hold the annexe light in place are prone to being easily broken. Furthermore, the fridge panelling had the plastic surrounds break (I can't fathom why), and the drawer latches were instantly prone to sticking (requiring a bit a graphite to never stick again). On the undercarriage, the plastic elbows to the water-tank are plastic and hence prone to breakage from stones and therefore drain the water-tank, and the brake wiring is so exposed that they have nearly been blasted out of existence - requiring repair and taping up out of the way when this should have been done at the factory. In short, corners have been cut in the quality of so many facets, especially for an 'off-roader', that to call it an 'outback' model is deceptive at best. The van does have compactness, good layout and clearance. It is therefore very unfortunate that a few short-cuts have been taken where these surely would not materially impact on the price. Compactness, good layout and road clearance Don't take one off road without first replacing every cheap plastic bit on it, and undertake major reinforcing of drawers and water tank elbows and undercarriage wiring!
