LG DV390H

Good – A very nice standard DVD player; the one you should own before switching to Blu-ray (if you ever do). Recommended. I just wish it had AutoPlay, but perhaps a future firmware release will re-add it in again (fingers crossed). If you're not interested in a Blu-ray player, then this is the Rolls Royce of standard DVD players. It is tiny (35mm high) so fits in anywhere, and the black color also suits all cabinets stylishly. As the manufacturer's review says, it does support up-scaling to 1080P resolution via HDMI, but if you have a HDTV then it will support up-scaling internally anyway so you don't need this player to up-scale for you (something to be aware of!). This player comes as Region 4 locked but you can unlock it for any region by opening the disc tray and hitting the 0 button on the remote 4 times, then follow the prompts. Easy! It also supports DivX playback, so burn a DVD disc with all your favorite downloaded shows and watch 'em in the player and your big TV instead of PC monitor. Supports HDMI output, as well as component, S-Video and optical audio. Switching between the up-scaling resolutions with this player is slow, there is a 2 or 3 second delay between each mode and the screen is black during this time. Again, if you have a HDTV it will up-scale anyway so don't bother doing it with this player. The main con about this is the lack of the AutoPlay feature from previous LG DVD players! With AutoPlay, you would stick in a DVD movie and the player would play it immediately, bypassing any forced startup ads or FBI warnings and so on. This feature was so fantastic but sorely missing from this model, hence why I've only given this 4 out of 5 stars and not 5. My previous LG model (7711P) had AutoPlay but it died an untimely death, and I miss AutoPlay so badly. :(
