Logitech Bluetooth Mouse M555B

Nice mouse but – I've been using a old Logitech wireless mouse for several years at work and absolutely love it. It is accurate, batteries last a year or more and it "just works". After buying a Laptop PC for home, the logical thing to do was to buy a Bluetooth mouse from Logitech. I chose the M555b because it was small, the specs looked good, reviews were mostly… Read more
good and it did not tie up a USB port. Well, the installation was reasonably easy but the tracking was a little jittery or imprecise. No amount of adjustment seemed to alter that. Then we noticed that the Acer PC always disabled Bluetooth at start-up (to save power) and so Bluetooth had to be manually turned after every start-up. Then the mouse took up to a minute to connect - if it did - and it sometimes did not connect at all. After a year and several uninstall, re-installs of the M555b I have had enough! I've bought a Logitech M325 and it is rock solid and just works straight away. Looks great, comfortable, wheel tilt action, batteries last jittery tracking, cannot use immediately, occasionally refuses to work at all,
Sometimes dodgy but overall convenient – It is a Bluetooth mouse, the advantage being that it doesn't tie up a USB port on your laptop. However this Bluetooth connection can get pretty flooded if you're also syncing a phone or something, and the mouse starts lagging. Sometimes, the Bluetooth drivers may bug up and you have to spend a couple of minutes removing the device and re-adding… Read more
it, which can be a pain. This happens about once every couple of months though.
The battery life is also great, I haven't had to change it since I got it about 5 months ago (I use it for about an hour a day on average). You do need to remember to turn it off between sessions though, otherwise it'll drain really quickly.
It takes a little bit of getting used to the middle click being a separate button just below the scroll wheel, but after a while that's fine. Also, the smooth scrolling feature (the clicking of the scroll wheel disengages) is something I use as second nature now, for scrolling through pdf's and etc quickly.
Overall a good mouse for a portable laptop, but wouldn't recommend you use it for a permanent desktop or desktop replacement laptop. Small, hyperscroll wheel, doesn't need USB, good battery life bluetooth drivers may bug, shape not really ergonomic, bad tracking on smoother surfaces
It's only a mouse but – ...it works so well! Normally, I'd want to own something for a while before writing a review, but a few things occurred once I bought this and started using it a day ago, plus there' a slim chance of a bargain in the offing. The marked price was around $55, but the supplier had a 25% discount, so it was comparable with a voucher offer so I… Read more · 5
took it to the checkout and found it was discounted by a further 25%, making the total cost about $26.
No regrets about the purchase at all - the mouse is responsive whether I use it on my table or couch cushions, and so far I have had no dropouts or skipping (where the pointer fails to move when the mouse does).
I am migrating from my desktop to my laptop (http://www.productreview.com.au/p/hp-probook-4730s.html)
and though my current Logitech wireless mouse - using a USB dongle - was still in very good condition, I had been informed that a bluetooth device would use even less host battery so thought I'd try the M555b. I'd tend to suggest the information is correct, for my laptop seems to have somewhat more battery life than before, but it was the liberation of a USB port and not having to use the dongle that were the big attractions.
What I didn't know was that I'd be getting a mouse that was so different to the one I already had. The M555b is lighter to use in every respect - and if you are after a mouse suited for gaming, then pass this one by, for it lacks the extra buttons (as other reviewers have pointed out) that offer better gaming functionality, plus its lightness may well be a handicap, given that Logitech has gaming mice with weight blocks that permit customization of feel.
So different is the feel of this mouse that my other Logitech mice feel clunky, clumsy, oafish devices. The scroll wheel is much lighter in operation and so too the buttons - though I'd assure potential buyers that there is no greater chance of accidental pressing or scrolling than my previous mouse. Deliberate pressure is still required to activate the buttons.
My smallish hands fit the mouse very well, and the glossy finish on the top plate feels quite pleasant and grippy.
Clicking the wheel sees it is possible to scroll down a long list very quickly by increasing the wheel movement sensitivity, but after trying this, it seems more gimmick than anything else: I tend to use the elevator bars on a window for scrolling down quickly, and after trying the rapid scrolling once, found it less than useful and slower than the elevator bars.
Logitech probably needs to review its driver suite though, for it is quite large and takes a while to download, plus it seems to have lost the panel for the programmable buttons with this device. Also, the instructions that came with the device tell me that when paired and connected, the blue led should be on. It is not. Checking the online help to get the mouse tab back, gives me instructions I cannot follow - if I try, "TrustedInstaller" tells me I cannot, even though I am running in Administrator mode. Note to Logitech: your software is not up to scratch, and I am not alone in finding your software lacking.
I shall keep trying, and report on my progress otherwise back here, if my review is accepted.
A terrific piece of hardware, let down by buggy software. Light yet positive controls, apparent battery life, efficiency of BT connection Poor software
Unreliable - constant drop outs – I have used this mouse for 12 months and have been very unhappy with it. It constantly drops out from my computer and has to be re-configured and reinstalled all the time. I updated the drivers and did everything I could possibly do, not wanting to believe a so called trustworthy brand could make a shoddy product. Not enough buttons or features… Read more
and quite small.
I used it as it was given to me by work (brand new). I thought a bluetooth mouse would be handy as it doesnt require a usb port but have now decided to stick with usb technology. I run windows 7 on a laptop. Have used other mice on this laptop with no dramas, so I definitely believe the problem resides with the mouse. Long battery life. Always disconnecting itself from the computer. Not many features. Small
Excellent Mouse - with a catch....... or two - depends what you are using it for – I was very pleased with this mouse. Ergonomic, responsive for a bluetooth (more so than others I have used including the Targus which I have had to purchase instead). I have one catch. Sadly the speed scroll which is in fact the most gimmicky thing about the mouse is activated by pressing the scroll wheel in or pressing again to release and… Read more
"scroll freely". It does not act like a normal "middle button" function which is typically activated when you click the centre wheel button. This function is critical for me when using CAD (more-so Revit) software. Hence this mouse did not really function at all for my purposes.
Logitech software was very nicely programmable on the Mac too which I was surprised about - far better than on Windows 7 where there is still an ugly and confusing interface for Logitech driver settings.
Used the M555B with a Mac running windows via Parallels 6 or which ever is latest. THis adds a tad more complication in that the customisation is made more complex because I could not get the Logitech software installed under windows to over-ride the mouse controls of the Mac (even if I make them work independently of each other which is possible - the Parallels software seems to give less customisation for the mouse driver.
If you are using this directly under windows you may be able to over-ride the small centre button on top to be the "middle button"or perhaps that comes by default - in which case this will be the best Bluetooth mouse you'll find. Shape, feel, responsiveness. Speed-scroll + gimmick.
Excellent – Perfect Bluetooth mouse, a solid winner from Logitech. Would have been nice if case was provided and more buttons. Batteries / recharge is generally a user specific thing Perfect Size, Solid design, Elegant, Low battery indicator, Great battery life, easy to setup and go, very responsive, works on almost every surface No case, not rechargeable, not enough buttons
