Its Kind of good but its okay more of – I like the size, i like the everything, i just cant find 24 hour mode. It has a radio mode which is quite nice but its hard to use properly. Also I keep hitting snooze instead of the alarm off button. The battery part to save the time in case of a black out does not work either and it makes me mad. Show reply
Rubbish refund our money – Philips clock radio Designed and developed by philips holland Model aj3540/79 Serial number AQ021222099424 Just had power black out from yesterday 5pm till today 3 pm When power was restored We had.a new battery in this radio No Go
Rubbish product – I bought three of these units based on the purported quality of the Philips brand name and the good looking style of the alarm clock. However, it is not fit for purpose or of merchantable quality. When the power is turned off or there is an outage, it is almost impossible to get the clock working again. I have managed to get only one of the clocks… Read more
working again after inserting the power plug in and out dozens of times, however the other two clocks will not come back on. There is no display. This product is useless and should be withdrawn, if not already. My experience as a consumer with Phillips has also been unsatisfactory. An email to the company was ignored and no reply or acknowledgement was ever received. Rating: terrible - negative 5.

Philips AJ3540/79 – We purchased a Philips AJ 3540/79 Alarm Clock radio because we thought Philips had a good name, We are like many other people and try to avoid purchasing the rubbish that is coming out of China. We had a power outage and the clock cannot be reset. It is now only fit for the rubbish tip. Very disappointed in Philips.

Bought the product by brand name, Philips. Was this a mistake? – Wanted to buy a good clock radio and chose Philips because I have always been pleased with the brand in the past.--(over 40 years). Was pleased with the large numerals but cannot seem to be able to dim the display. It lights up the whole room of a night. The clock loses a considerable amount of time each day and the radio reception is full of… Read more
static (probably a problem with the speakers). Power went off during a storm and now the clock will not restart-nor the radio-just two glowing dots on the screen. The clock was bought at Big W in Mildura, Victoria. I live in South Australia, so will not be making the trip back in a while. Was about to go out to buy another brand but thought I would complain first as there might be others who fall into the same trap and buy a good-looking clock radio with a good brand name only to find out it does not function as it should.

Follow Up On Philips Email To Contact Them – I rang the 1300 number as requested by Philips and found this pretty futile. I live in Brisbane Australia and this number was to a call centre in the Philippines. The advice was take it back to the store. I can do that as I didn't keep the box or docket as they have no idea my call was in response to an e-mail from Philips.

Really bad clock – I had the same problems with the clock loosing time and now the digits have disappeared. I thought it was the power point so unplugged and re plugged in a new socket and same problem. I have lost the receipt so cant take it back.. so annoying. Have only had it for a few months. The other problem is it is only in 24hr time.

RUBBISH – The clock loses time over time, enough where I got to work late 2 days in a row and lost pay. In addition the display figures lose part of their brightness. This product should be recalled. Clock radios are such as simple technology how can Philips get it oh so WRONG.

wish i'd read the reviews – Disappointing product from Philips. I wanted the large display. However it doesn't show 12hr time - forces you to use 24hr time!. Seems to very gradually lose time. Impossible to reset time after power failure making it impossible to use . Wish I'd read the reviews first. If I had the docket I would return it. Instead I will bin it a costly mistake I will not repeat.

Perfect for military families but not for the average civilian! – I should have looked at this site before I made the mistake of purchasing a Philips AJ3540 clock radio. Luckily, the very sensible guys at ‘The good Guys’ gave me a refund when I explained the problem to them. Good on you Good Guys! To make sure that the product suited my needs, I downloaded the user manual from here:… Read more

This is clearly labelled as a manual for model AJ3540 and shows a PM LED (Fig 2, No 13) on the right hand side of the display and describes its function on page 8 as "PM indicator-lights up when time is PM"
From the above manual, I can only assume that a previous (or another) version of the AJ3540 did have 12 hour time but the 'smart' product designers at Phillips (perhaps they all had a military background) decided that 24 hour time was more appropriate for Australian users who regularly announce to their family that “Dinner will be served between 1915 and 1945 hrs - 50 pushups if you are late!”
I would hazard a guess that the same printed circuit board is used on all versions. It’s also highly likely that Philips got it wrong and over produced the 24 hour version and is trying to off-load the model that nobody wants on Australian consumers.
The packaging of the AJ3540 in the shop shows a PM LED on the right hand side of the display. The pictures of the AJ3540 at Australian websites; The Good Guys and Harvey Norman, also clearly show the PM indicator LED. If the functions of the AJ3540 were changed, should that not have been reflected in a Model No. change? e.g., AJ3540A or better AJ3541. In the engineering world, this is called version control and goes hand-in-hand with quality control. Should not the packaging and sales material also reflect this change in function?
At a later time I noticed that the Kogan website does have the correct picture and user manual but still no up-front warning that this is 24 hour only.
And one final word that probably reflects the views of the majority of Australian consumers, I would be happy to purchase this product if it had just 12 hour time or an option for 12/24 hour time.
Note to Philips Official responding to this post: Please don’t waste your time with the standard platitude “… we're sorry to hear …… feel free to reach out to us via 1300 363 39 …” How about something like “We have changed our design to reflect what Australian consumers want”

24 hour display only (this is 2015 Really) – 24 hour display only sales rep don't tell you this. Watch out for ships at night this thing lights up like a light house. If I had the docket I would return it. Will bin it instead. Great job Philips

Terrible product – 24hr format only, even when dimmed the unit illuminates the room so I have to turn towards wall then turn around when I want to see time. Loses time 1 minute a day after about two weeks. Wish I still had docket. Going to bin today!!!

Fading Display – I bought this item about 3yrs ago to go in my kitchen . The large display was great and I could see it clearly from the next room where I watch TV . It was also very handy to have the radio going while I was pottering in the kitchen . Over the last 6mths the digital display has been getting slowly dimmer . Now I have to walk up to the display… Read more
before I can make out what time it is . It gets better as the day gets darker but I am very disappointed in this clock radio as it has not lasted very long compared to the Philips clock radio I have had beside my bed for more than 10yrs . So either I have bought a dud or Philips doesn't make them to last very long now .

Shocked at pitiful radio performance. 24 Hour clock, unpopular format, only found out when setting i – Only positive point, is a large display. Difficult to tune in stations, due to stiff mechanism, just difficult to move control the right amount. Has excessive noise, generated from within the radio. What I would expect from a very cheap, economy unit, from an obscure Chinese online seller. I have long admired Philips products. Am 60yo, so know… Read more
how well previous Philips household appliances were made. Very unlikely I will ever buy Philips brand again!
This was bought for my 91 yo Mum, but she is stuck with a very old GAF brand, probably 20+ years old, which is better in every way, except has a small display. Philips, need to get ensure value for money, as clearly others have been shocked with quality/performance of this unit. Planning to return for a refund, so we can buy a CRX9, and will take complaint to appropriate Authorities, if we don't receive a refund.

This clock is not user friendly at all – This clock is not user friendly at all. Too much stuffing about.! Sometimes shows some strange number a few hours after setting time, this happened last night. User manual not very informative either! Salesperson said if you don't like bring it back, but when I took it back they would not swop it even though I took it back in original packing and receipt. Not happy with this product.
Good – If the alarm of button didnt toggle past the radio on setting i could live with the brightness (window tint etc). Large Screen, takes up a relatively small space. Didnt have interference/ unshielded speaker hum like a lot of cheap electronics. Display was defective as when brightness is turned down several characters still shone bright. To turn… Read more · 2
the alarm off (if you did wake up before it went off) you have to cycle past the radio on button. Could be to bright for most people in a bedroom even turned down. Curved plastic screen makes it hard to see in daylight compared to recessed displays. Being front heavy it tends to fall forward if you fumble with it at night.
