I promise you this machine will have you in stitches of anger and despair! The worst machine I've ever used and I have been sewing for over 20 years with my mum's 1990s singer and my nans 1951 singer.. I took the faulty Singer Promise machine to a local lincraft store and they all said it was broken. There is no way to use it. I then went through… Read more

Woolworths marketplace to try to return it and you can't get a hold of anyone to actually return it. When you read the reviews that say it's faulty, they are faulty. These machines are lemons. Do not buy them!! The tread constantly break, the tension is broken, the needles constantly break..

Terrible machine – I agree with the other reviews. This has been a difficult machine. The needle constantly breaks or gets stuck. I got help from SINGER to pull everything our and reload. Worked for about 5 minutes then stuck again! Not worth the trouble. Show details

Waste of money – Same problem as other reviewers. Bobbin getting stuck, timing out. Sent to spotlight for repairs and low and behold works great for about 1/2 hour and then clunk, broken needles and timing out. Have been sewing a variety of items with this machine, followed instructions for different weighted fabrics and it worked brilliantly at first but not now. Very frustrating. Show details

Load of junk – Had the machine just under two weeks and bobbin timing somehow mis-timed itself. Took advice from spotlight and Broke a few needles, 100yards of thread and six hours later I still couldn't get it to run. Took machine in and they sent it to a repair man. It ran for a few hours then after some serious clunks and same Ole story. It runs so poorly when it does work and shakes the house to bits. Utter cheap crap! Don't buy this cheap crap Show details

AVOID AND RUN!! – I bought this “toy” to teach people the basics of sewing. This machine can’t even hack a hem without conking out!! The tension is awful, the bobbin is finicky and often falls out or doesn’t catch the thread, and when the bobbin DOES work, the thread often bunches up inside the machine and jams the whole cursed thing! This was sold to me as… Read more

beginner-friendly, and I expected basic considering the cost, but honestly, this machine makes it HARDER to sew anything! If Singer is trying to tank their reputation, then keep selling this machine. It’s a huge embarrassment for Singer, and a huge deterrent for people wanting to get into sewing. When I tried to return it to Spotlight, the attendant said VERBATIM “it’s supposed to be clunky and difficult” as if I should just put up with buying junk! Spotlight and Singer refused to honour their 12-month refund because I should’ve known “it will have issues”. Hmm. What does that say about a brand?? Avoid at all costs. Run if you can!

Most unbalanced machine ever – Bought this for my daughter to teach her to sew. Gave it a test run and it was so un balanced. Just look at the design. The machine will never sit flat on a normal table. It has a 2.5 cm difference on one corner so as you feed fabric or get speed it tips to the back breaks thread and your needle. It an extremely poor design any engineer can see that. Will have to find a price of wood to try to balance. Really disappointed Show details

I bought 1409 & have had nothing but problems with the thread tension. I preferred Singer but totally regret purchase :( – Sew CHAIR covers, costumes, pillowcases, hem trousers and general clothes. The overlocking used to be ok but after a short while the tension on that and straight stitching keeps breaking. I have done all the trouble shooting possible. Still no success :( Show details

Would NOT recommend it at all – I bought this machine for my wife's birthday present several years ago. Thought it would be straightforward for a beginner to use. I simply can't believe how fiddly it is to thread the machine. I managed to get it threaded but then it wouldn't pick up the bobbin thread no matter what I tried. So we spoke to a lovely lady at a sewing shop who… Read more

suggested it my be the timing. Took the machine over to her, she put it on the counter, threaded the cotton and lo & behold it picked up the bobbin thread - not the timing. Whoever designed this machine has never had to use it themselves. Quite honestly I feel like throwing over a cliff

Biggest piece of rubbish I have ever bought – Absolute rubbish machine .. regret buying it now .. accessories are rubbish .. terrible threading system .. if I could return it I definately would .. it does not operate as it should .. cotton breaks every few metres .. constantly having to reset tension even using the same type of fabric ..  Show details

I'm SO disappointed...DONT RECOMMEND – I bought this sewing mashine for my mother as an early Mother's Day gift and helped set it up, the knob at the side was wonky and my mum used it ONLY ONCE for it it break off and the machine makes funny sounds and gets EXTREMELY hot every time you turn it on. I can't even take it back because I threw out the receipt with the box thinking it would… Read more

Perfect for everyone from absolute beginners to experienced users – My trusty old Empisal of 16 years started giving me trouble so I decided it was time to replace it. My stepmother had a Singer for many years and was extremely happy with it so after much comparison of reviews I decided on the 1409 as it suited my needs best ie.easy to use and without too many fancy stitches that I'd never use for the general… Read more ·  1

purpose I need a sewing machine for. This machine is incredibly easy to thread with little arrows showing you exactly how to thread it. Bobbin winding is a breeze. The manual is clear and the DVD is absolutely fantastic for absolute beginners. I really wish I'd had a dvd like this when I started out with my old machine all those years ago but they weren't around then. It would have saved me many frustrated hours. As with any machine so long as it is threaded correctly and the bobbin is wound correctly it shouldn't give you any problem at all. With such an easy machine and excellent DVD you can't go wrong!! Strong, sturdy and excellent reputation A cover would have been nice.
