Perfection!!! – This TV has been amazing! Bought it as a top of the line run out in 2014 (was still almost 3 grand then)and still in 2021 it puts other TVs to shame (especially Hisense, TCL and all the other Chinese brands and even Samsung apart from the top of the range), the TV has suburb motion (800) and as per usual fantastic build quality, mine has nothing wrong with it. Lemon don't buy a bravia – After owning a Samsung for 7 years, we decided to switch to the bravia kdl55hx850. 2 years later the display had a black line through it. Contacted sony repairs, who said I should have purchased the extended warranty, put me onto a dodgy repairer who said it would cost $270 to inspect it and then approx 1000 for the repair. Ripped off, so through the piece of junk on the tip. Thanks Sony!
Short life – I paid top dollar for what I thought was top product at 3k. After five years it went on the blink, seemingly needing 30 minutes and then longer to warm up. I'll have to buy a new tv and it will not be sony
Paid-Content Delivery Incompetence – We have a brand new Bravia TV marketed as a "Smart TV". It certainly is, unless you want to hire a movie and stream it. We have had two attempts at it and we still have not received the content (in spite of following their trouble shooting instructions). Contacting Sony Support, we either encounter incompetence, or we got pushed from one… Read more
division to another because they didn't know how to deal with the problem. Don't try to get a refund as they simply can't do it. If you want to buy it as a TV, then it is great. If you want to take advantage of their paid-for content, then be prepared for no end of trouble. Get yourself an Apple TV unit. It took me 10 minutes to set up and I can now watched hired films.
Sony. Back to its very best with the KDL-HX850 – For years I had been blissfully happy with my Sony Bravia KDL-46XBR television. It was by far the best LCD television when it was released and despite the relentless march of technology its picture quality had yet to be bettered six years on. Unfortunately the digital tuner finally decided to play up and I was left with the options of either… Read more · 2
having it repaired or purchasing an external digital tuner.
As luck would have it, and on the very day that I was going shopping for digital tuners, an email popped in from Sony outlining their Easter Sale items which just happened to include the KDL-55EX850. Sony were offering the 55HX850 for $1882.00 including the optional brushed aluminum sound stand, a pair of 3D glasses and a $100.00 bluray pack. Bargain! After reading every review that I could find (all favourable) I decided to take the plunge and purchased from the Sony store at Robina Town Center on the Gold Coast.
Unpacking and assembling the optional sound stand was fairly straight forward, however unpacking the TV and mounting it to the stand is definitely a two person job. As you slide the shipping box up and off it's base the screen can fall forward so you need another person to hold it while you do this. Mounting the screen onto the base is also a little tricky and is best accomplished with the assistance of another person lest you scratch that lovely slab of brushed aluminum.
Once the TV was assembled and all the connections had been made I proceeded to watch a variety of different quality signals (1080p24, 576i, 1080i etc) to see just how good the out of the box calibration was. The answer? Pretty good actually. If you are not a tech savvy person and you just want a TV that you can hook up and switch on then your going to be very happy with the 55HX850. The picture quality is outstanding and you could quite happily live with it just the way it is; but that would be like buying a Lamborghini and only ever driving it around the city. When properly calibrated the 55HX850 really starts to pop and show what it's truly capable of. Blacks are virtually as good as the very best plasmas and the picture quality simply blows your mind. It's stunning! Rich, deep, faithful and very accurate. Watching Avatar on bluray was a simply amazing experience with every little detail reproduced with pin sharp clarity. It's so good that the picture almost takes on a 3D quality even though its still in 2D mode. It's as good as anything I have ever seen, irrespective of price.
As you can probably tell I am all about picture quality, after all that's what a TV is for. However as well as having an absolutely stunning picture (once calibrated) the 55HX850 possesses many other desirable traits. For a start its beautifully built and the "Monolith" design gives it a modern art like presence. It's also extremely energy efficient and has all of the features that you could possible want in a smart TV.
I couldn't be more happy with this TV and it's a more than worthy replacement for my six year old KDL-46XBR. Stunning picture quality once calibrated. Beautiful design and high build quality. Sony doing what it does best. The remote is a little low rent. No dedicated cable tidy on the rear of the TV.
What an awesome unit! – 8 days in and we are absolutely loving the picture quality and out of the box clarity of the TV. The interaction with external devices is flawless, especially with the PS3 our HTPC. 3D capabilities with media that is not technically 3D optimized is quite remarkable considering that the electronics of the TV itself is what is adapting Real Time to… Read more · 1
a changing picture landscape.
As an example... Free to Air really is not great, though you get a feel for the effect. When playing the PS3, however, the viewing landscape changes quite profoundly and the added depth would justify playing with 3D permanently, of course depending on your preference.
The HX850 was a very appropriate replacement for our KDL46XBR (which failed due to damage during a move). So far this unit sustains all our faith in the Sony brand and we would happily keep going back for more! Picture, connectivity capacity, setup, 3D is novel The remote feels a little too flimsy
Sony KDL55HX850 – Just got a new Sony KDL55HX850. I have only had it for about 10 days now but it is a very good quality screen and clear too. For the price i was looking at this one and a Samsung UA55ES7100MXXY i had the chance to take both of these units home which i did, first i took the Sony and then the Samsung and i tell you something the picture on the Sony… Read more
beats the Samsung hands down so it went stright back and i still have the Sony (love it). So if you are looking for a good quality TV then this one here is not bad for the money (could be cheaper than $2700). It has gorilla glass, the feel of it when taking it out of the box you know that its made well. Screen clarity, very easy to use apart from the remote. At this stage all i can say is that i dont realy like the remote, buttons for the sound and channel should be higher.
Excellent Experience – Sony's lates flagship Bravia KDL-55HX850 is a bit expensive at RRP; but you will get deals from retailers like GoodGuys, JB HIFI, Myer and David Jones as well as Sony online store with price reductions and bundle offers (1TB recorder, surround system, blue-ray player, etc). I have bought one from one of these and Sony will add a Google TV package… Read more
