My 1976 Sunbeam deep fryer died just recently. Has been used at least weekly since then, so great value. I purchased the DF4500 as a replacement and have been very pleased with its performance. Show details ·  1

My daughter had one of these and threw it away, which is in line with many other reviews here, however I totally love it. So why the difference? I think it has a lot to do with the fat/oil that you use because oils and fat heat at different temperatures. I use Supafry Solid Oil which is a fat. I boil my potatoes now, smash them a little then… Read more ·  1

put them in my fryer and OMG the crispiest 'roast' potatoes ever, I'll never roast in the oven again. I cook in batches of 8-10 (big family), then just before serving I'll put the lot back in to finish off. There's never any left!

I leave the lid on to heat to the top temperature but cook with lid off (mostly). I always make sure the fat is hot enough before adding food. After use I simply let it cool, turn the lid upside down and tuck it away in my cupboard. No smell. I also use the solidified fat, just scrape out a little if I want to use it instead of oil for cooking. I often don't use the basket unless I'm cooking chips.

Looks so much nicer than my previous metal one and much easier to keep clean. Makes food taste so much nicer, I'm totally a raving fan.

A deep fryer that never reaches frying temperature – This deep fryer never reaches a proper frying temperature. There's nothing else to say. It might cook other things fine, but it is not a deep fryer, unless you want soggy oil soaked things. It's garbage for frying, which is why I bought it. Avoid entirely. Show details

Still going strong – Whilst not a current model the trusty Sunbeam Bistro Cooker was no doubt the forerunner to todays offering. I have had mine for as long as I can remember at least 20+yrs and still use it regularly. It is a multi cooker with a ceramic insert it becomes a slow cooker and with the basket a deep fryer which is what we have mainly used it for since… Read more

acquiring a stand alone slow cooker. The size of the round vessel allows for decent quantities of fish, chicken, chips, potato scallops and a host or other fried foods to be cooked at the same time which is important if feeding the family or entertaining. The stand unscrews and the whole lot can be washed in the dishwasher though I traditionally wash it by hand to make sure I get the stainless/aluminium surface all nice and shinny. The painted base has started to peel (todays version has an ABS type molded base) and I guess that the base on the new model looks similar. As it would happen my frypan gave up the ghost at about the same time as the thermostat cord for the fryer did and as they were interchangeable I was able to continue using the fryer. (A replacement thermostat cord was available from Sunbeam but it was almost the same price as a new complete unit.)I am now looking to change to a air fryer which brought me here thanks to all contributors for your advice.

Very disappointed! – Well very interesting, I contacted sunbeam several times about my Multicooker that just stopped working after about 6-8 uses. First they wanted me to ring them I did, they wouldn’t do anything to help because my Multicooker was a few weeks out of warranty, the fact that I’d only used it a few times meant nothing to them. Then they asked me to send… Read more

my contact details, I did this. They then rang me and claimed there was nothing they could do yet again, as I told them there is plenty they could do, but they are choosing not to help. They also suggested it was probably the cord that was the problem, and said I should buy a new one. Then they asked me to contact them yet again to resolve this issue, I did this again. Then they said they couldn’t help because I couldn’t produce my proof of purchase. As I’d never been asked to produce it, one does wonder how they came up with that particular excuse for not helping. a few days ago I saw a sunbeam Multicooker on display at a store, exactly the same as mine, EXCEPT THE NEW ONE HAD A LITTLE SUPPORT ON THE PROBE, MINE DOES NOT HAVE A SUPPORT AND SURPRISE THE PROBE IS LOOSE. COULD THIS BE THE REASON SUNBEAM SUGGESTED THE CORD WAS THE PROBLEM ON MINE? WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE THAT THEY KNEW THIS WAS A FAULT AND ADDED THE SUPPORT TO STOP THE PROBE FROM COMING LOOSE? Amazing that they wouldn’t even send me a new cord when clearly they have changed the design for a reason? Even more disappointing!

Wait a while – Recently the thermostat of my old faithful (over 40 years) Sunbeam deep fryer failed, threatening to cause a conflagration. Decided to replace it with a Multicooker, despite reviews that the oil didn't get hot enough. Thought the same myself with the first use, so decided to experiment with a thermometer. Set the thermostat to highest setting… Read more ·  1

(10), and discovered that the light went out at 160 deg. celcius, much lower than the optimum temp for deep frying of about 180 deg. The thermostat then cycled on and off for several minutes until the oil temp reached nearly 190 deg. celcius. At that stage I turned it off.

Clearly it's worth waiting. The light going off (first time) is NOT an indication that the oil is hot enough. I'll know next time.

What persuaded me to buy the Multicooker is its versatility, compact size and the fact that it doesn't need vast quantities of oil. Compact. Versatile. Fine wire basket that drains well. Minimal oil requirement. Thermostat not necessarily indicative of temperature

Definitely a handy multi cooker :) – Bought secondhand on eBay but didn't look used. I use this for many MANY things :) Frying chips, samosas, curry puffs, poppodums. Roast meats, it can hold a LARGE roast, enough for 6 of us. Then when that's kept warm in the oven, all the potatoes. Also soups, curries and stews. I have not experienced any heating issues, the chips cook… Read more

perfectly and I wonder if it is user error? i.e. Filling the oil beyond the fill line or using oil that is too old? I use Golden Fields canola/vege oil or Jingilli Olive Oil for frying.

I don't have any oil leaks... maybe the metal rest on the handle has been bent or something? Mine rests perfecly so that the basket stays on an angle and drips back into the pot.

The size offers greater flexibility when frying things of different shapes, it handles a full bag a shop bought chips easily, can fit many small samosas or curry puffs. I have made big triangular puffs folded with quarters of the shop bought puff pastry and can do about 3 at a time. I find the circle shape less restrictive (i.e. offers a greater area to fry) than the previous rectangular shaped deep fryer I had.

We have also taken this to our powered camp site where its multi functions come in very handy. Vege soup being a family fave.

I use this maybe 3 times per week??? Have had it for a few years and find it to be a great kitchen item - no complaints here. Good price, many uses, reliable, does what it claims. Nothing so far :)

Poor heating – I bought a new one after my last one wants heating properly any more. I’m having yeh exact same problem. I bought this one last year and it’s just gone bad to worse. Takes half an hour to cook chips and try never get crispy due to the poor heat. Reluctant to buy another one if it’s going to be the same again. Show details

Wish I had read reviews first – Does not get hot enough for deep frying, despite being filled with the correct type/amount of oil and being left on '10' for thirty minutes. Absolute Garbage! – We purchased this unit based on its brand name and it's simple rounded design similar to the ones owned by my parents and grandparents in the 1980's. Works well, except when it doesn't – I've had 2 of these now, both with the same problem as others seem to have had. Works well at first but after a while the heater just stops working. Both times that mine conked out, I had just done one perfect set of chips, then went to do the next batch and they just sat in the oil looking like a bunch of anemic soggy uncooked potatoes.
