Western Digital My Passport for Mac

Doesn't work & not recognized by MacBook – On a brand new device, not even 2 weeks old it doesn't work- WD wants ME to pay for data recovery when Apple says it's a bad device. BAD, BAD, BAD customer experience! Don't waste your $$ if you have a Mac. I use this for essential home data as well as design and photos for my work and it just stopped recognizing the drive. Low-quality unreliable product – I bought a WD my passport 4TB 2 years ago for backing up my essential data. Of course, when it's for back up you take well care of it and connect it to your computer once in a while and put it in a safe place till next time. A few months ago when I wanted to back up my mac I realised that it's spinning but nothing happening, simple is that. It was… Read more
just not showing anything. All my data are gone! Then I tried to seek help from WD Australia, after lots of back and forth they organised a FedEx pick up from my place to be sent back to Malaysia for a replacement/repair. It was taking so long since I handed my hard drive but there was no sign/update from either WD or FedEx. So, I decided to check the tracking number and interestingly found out this item has been seized in the Malaysian airport. Since 2 months ago I have contacted FedEx and WD but nobody takes responsibility for it. How it is possible for a big company like WD that has no repair or customer service in a country like Australia and we have no choice but send items overseas. First thing is that the quality of WD products for sure is really bad. I have 3 other brands of the same thing which are older than this and all working well. We are clearly paying the premium price but what is really inside that shiny box is no premium. Second, there is no guarantee that you will have your data in there. For no reason, it might stop working. Third, You are forced to send your faulty item overseas and god help you if you see it ever again as it might go missing somewhere. Forth, nobody from WD is responsible for it and you are simply ignored. SO, do yourself a great favour and avoid this whatever... There are lots of other options with better quality and even cheaper than this which works perfectly.
Suddenly stopped working properly and lost all the data – I had this external hard drive for 2 months when it suddenly stopped working properly. It has never been dropped and was used for graphic design projects between work and home. I plugged it into my macbook pro when it suddenly said the disk was unrepairable. I tried copying it to my mac and after 3 hours it said it was unable to complete the… Read more
transfer. I then tried to do a disk restore and run first aid through the mac disk utility, but that didn't work either. It's pretty frustrating and disappointing and I was wondering if anyone could recommend another external hard drive that is more stable.
Unrecognised by MacBook Pro – This drive was great, until one day my MacBook Pro ceased to recognise the device. It has always been handled carefully. After following the advice from WD and several forums, it was concluded that the drive has failed and all data has been lost. Based on the comments from other My Passport owners on the forums, it is clear that this is a very… Read more
common fault. This is very disappointing for what was an expensive drive intended to prevent data loss!
Completely useless remote HD – Got this remote 1TB USB HD to store mainly photos (wife is wildlife photographer) about one year ago. Has always had trouble mounting to desktop; requires to be unplugged and replugged multiple times; the WD tools supplied do nothing. Bought it because it was supposed to be 'made for Mac'. If so, they should go back to drawing board. Now very rarely mounts at all. Replacing.
Small and easy to use – My last external drive used for back up died after 2 years, so I decided to try another brand specifically for Mac that is designed for Time Machine. I decided on the WD My Passport for Mac 500GB model after checking out the Apple site and various forums. It is exactly what I needed and does what it is supposed to do. You plug it in via USB,… Read more · 1
(no external power required), an icon comes up on screen, it opens Time Machine, and off it goes! I don't want any hassles with back up and it should be easy - and this WD is. It's also very small, so sits neatly next to my MacBook Pro on the desk and then slips into my bag when I need to take it with me. I'm very happy with this product and hope it keeps up the good work for many years to come! Everything.
