  LG Optimus One

Good – This is my first smart phone. Loving Android. Lots of cool apps. The Optimus One performs well given its price. Latest Android (v2.2 Froyo), lightweight, compact. Relatively

cheap. Good performance and specs for the price. Lack of flash and low-res camera make results in average photos. GPS seems a little flakey. This is my first GPS device so I'm not sure what to expect but I've lost GPS signal a couple of times. Could be the phone, the app or just normal GPS behaviour. Battery life is average (about two days).

  Beyonwiz DP-P1 / DP-P2

Excellent – A great unit. Best off-the-shelf PVR available in Australia. I looked at Strong, Topfield, LG, Panasonic, Sony & Digitec and the Beyonwiz ticked all the boxes. It was a little

more expensive than the others but was worth the extra money for the additional features it offered. Twin HD tuners means you can watch one program whilst recording another or record two simultaneously.

Supports a wide variety of video, audio and photo formats.

Can access my multimedia files on a networked HDD.

Skip over adverts. Remote is a little awkward.

Noise from HDD and fan can be distracting.

  Britax Safe-n-Sound Maxi Rider II

Excellent – We bought this for our daughter when she out-grew her previous car seat. My parents-in-law also bought one for when our daughter travels in their car. It's very safe and my

daughter finds it comfortable. It can be converted to a booster seat when she reaches 18kg although we haven't had to do this yet. The armrests fold up to aid entry and egress. It even has cup-holders which at first seemed gratuitous but are actually quite useful. The seat has side wings for next support (and side-impact protection) and a high back. Installation was fairly straightforward. Safe, comfortable, adjustable, foldable arm-rests, cup-holders

  Gaggia MM Burr

OK – I've had this grinder for about five years - it's a proper burr grinder, which can be adjusted to get the grind just right. I'm particularly happy with the quality of the grinds

it produces. However, if you fill the hopper the outlet gets clogged and needs to be unclogged to finish the grind. You have to keep the outlet clean to prevent a blockage from building up. It's also difficult to keep the rest of the unit clean. I damaged the bin of my grinder so grinds escape from it when I'm grinding only adding to the mess (but that's my fault).

Great grinding but messy. Adjustment allows for perfect grinding Gets clogged, difficult to keep clean

Brita Marella Cool / Marella XL

Good – This was a Christmas gift. We wanted a filter jug we could keep in the fridge, so we'd have a supply of chilled, filtered water for summer. The Marella fits the bill perfectly.

It's slim so it fits in a shelf in the fridge door. I particularly like that it comes apart so you can clean it thoroughly when changing the filter. Our last filter jug got mouldy and couldn't be cleaned as it didn't come apart. The design is really elegant from the spout on the cap to the flap in the lid. The filters work well; you can really notice the difference in taste and smell of filtered an unfiltered water. It has a timer that lets you know when the filter needs replacing. This assumes you use the jug regularly. The only downside is that the filters cost about $10 each - still much cheaper than the rip-off that is bottled water. Comes apart for thorough cleaning, filters water effectively, great design, built-in timer so you know when to replace filter Replacement filters are expensive
