Acer TravelMate 240 Series

Acer Australia – We purchased an Acer TravelMate laptop ($750) through my son’s high school which was chosen by the school. Within the first 6 months, we had issues with the motherboard which was replaced as it was under warranty. Soon after, we had to have the screen replaced. I must add that there was NO misuse as suggested by Acer support. We had it assessed by… Read more
the school and they deemed the defect (cracked but with no visible cracking resulting in a white screen) to not be covered under warranty and the replacement cost us $250. Within the six months, some of the keyboard keys had also fallen off.
18 months on, the screen is malfunctioning again and has been assessed by the school. Again they have said that it is cracked (white screen again with no visible cracks) and not covered by warranty and thus will cost $250 to repair. As reported by others in this forum, the left hinge has also broken off. There have been numerous students at the school who have had to have their screen replaced at a cost to the parents.
We have had no problems whatsoever with any of the other branded electronic devices we own. I have a 3 year old Lenovo work laptop that I take overseas and interstate regularly and have not experienced any issues. I am extremely disappointed in this Acer product and will ensure that we never purchase an Acer product again. I am not prepared to pay $250 for another screen not knowing how long it will last and if the same issue occurs to be told that it is not covered by warranty and have to pay for it to be repaired yet again. So now using a Samsung tablet instead. I have never come across a laptop whose screen has failed at all let alone twice. It appears that this Acer laptop is not fit for purpose for anyone! I wish I could select no stars for this product, beyond terrible.
Excellent – it's some years old now ..all the keys still work fine no broken parts screen functions fine -no slappy shaking top -This is just a fine Notebook for anyone to use.. Bought this Acer for 105 euro's on ebay and i could see before buy it and it looked like any other laptop but the quality looked solid -only the battery was dead after all the… Read more · 1

I start testing and even made a small video on youtube search for :ACER TRAVELMATE 240 -Its the only video about this Acer made ever on Youtube so you cannot miss it..
As i said the battery is dead so she runs on power and i test her 12 hours a day and no fails or errors everything works fine msn is connected music plays at the same time and i,m writing this revue on it now.
All i can say is IF YOU WANT A CHEAP MAC --search for This MAchine and you will be a winner.
O yea i have 1 gig memory in it ..and that seems more then enough for what i do with it under Mac OSx
Good Luck ..
Gr Puck I cannot find anything BAD -
Terrible – I think Acer Computers are the worst - their customer service centre would win a prize for managing to employ the largest group of people with an iq of a dead chicken who make sure you know how much they hate their job! My AcerTravelMate failed within 2 weeks of purchasing a brand new one. When attempting to get acer to fix it under warranty I… Read more
had to deal with 50 minute phone calls (minimum) to speak to their rude and ignorant customer service center in Sydney - I then found that Acer lost my laptop for over 7 weeks and couldn't find it. When they finally found it they refused to fix it under warranty and made all sorts of excuses. The laptop has only worked for 3 out of 9 months and Acer have been rude and unhelpful towards me in all ways they possibly could. If you can buy anything else - DON"T BUY ACER.
P.s I'd like to thank acer for finally returning my almost brand new laptop without its power and covered in cigarette ash and dirt in a box they obviously picked up from the tip - Thanks Acer for the WORST customer service I have ever endured and making sure my laptop is unsuable and I cannot work.
Terrible – ACER lappie borke down, sent it in for repair and then they lost it. it been three months and they dont know where it is. They say its been received but they are not sure if they can fix it this year. Very rude customer service, never gave me a proper answer, made me lose an hour everytime I called, treated me like crap, very unhappy and… Read more
stressed cos I got no lappie and I am nearly 2grands out of pocket. Cheap and good specs poor battery,
poor build,
poor overall performance,
plenty of bloatware
no OS cd provided, very unstable system
poor customer service and reapir
Terrible – Acer does not have customer service or relations department, each time you call tech support they say to reformat hard drive regardless of the problem. My two problems are hardware related (motherboard).produce would be good if Acer had a support team that cared. My cost, size, I liked that they merged with gateway No Customer service, warranty… Read more
cost $30.00 each time it is sent in for repair, to slow for vista, 1 year old and already on the second repair. My computer broke 62 days after first repair (although it had been acting up (freezing since it was repaired the first time) $30.00 for shipping 4 to 6 weeks for repair

Ps the 240 will boot up off a external hp dvd 940e dullea layer dvd rw with lightscribe, grate for making custom norton ghost 2003 backup & restore dvds. OK – Needless to say my Acer lasted 12 months before she lost her battle some nasty trojen or whatever virus go to her. And for what I payed for her, it just wasnt worth getting her fixed. I found this computer slow, and unable to handle updates and new software. Its too small to had photoshop in conjunction with other programs. Small and affordable,… Read more
those are two wonderful things if your a poor student. Whats not so great is how many viruses that gets. Its like war of the nerds all over my tiny computer. And norton just isnt defending my like he used to.
Terrible – Of all the computers I've ever come across, I'd give Acer's attempt the following grade: Acer name = 25 out of 100 (I felt sorry for them) Travelmate= 08 out of 100 (because it starts up) Graphics = -5 out of 100 (I TOOK POINTS !) Updating = -5 out of 100 (I'm being nice here) Total Grade. If you got one for cheap, you are most likely… Read more
happy because it is your first or you simply have never had another computer. Please do not think of travelmate as the average computer. The travelmate has really done a fine job in making any other computer you purchase seem like you've got the best deal.
I truly hate my travelmate with all my heart.
BUY a PENTINIUM and stay away from CELERON ! It was a gift and it was free. IT SUCKS ! The battery lasted one whole month and then decided to only work for 10 minutes or less before it dies right out.
[EXTREME GRAPHICS]- reminds me of my very first computer (Anyone remember the old IBM's?) If you had an old Ibm computer and you got one of these, you actually took a downgrade. This piece of crap has turned me against Acer for life.
[NORTON ANTIVIRUS] Don't you install it ! It will slow your computer down to a bare nothing. Instead, go Download AVG 7.0 and ZoneAlarm, which are both free and takes up less space as well as works better. You're welcome.
[GAMES]- It does NOT play well with any kind of games. DO NOT GET THIS IF YOU WANT TO PLAY A GAME. These guys were after money, and not your happiness. If you wanted to try out something that deals with graphics, your best bet is to stay clear of the travelmate at all cost. The computer will not even load them up. You'll drop, roll, and cry your heart out. It dosn't have an updated graphics card.
[keyboard] WATCH OUT ! The keys get stuck, the keys sometimes don't work, the keys will begin to fade after a few months, so just forget me even trying to explain. You get my meaning.
EVERYTHING. They should recall all these laptops and jail who ever made them - for life.
OK – For my first notebook - and at the price I got it, it would be great for students with lower usage. I have found myself updating it after 6 months as my usage has increased and changed. The speed of this laptop is great. The price I got it for was fantastic. I do a lot of spreadsheets and mainly emails. I do not use it for games or video… Read more
editing, etc. I like how the keys can be clipped on and off (for cleaning purposes or when dust gets under there!) Battery life is very towards the 2 hours specifed for this notebook so it is not a great shock to always run for the power cord. The weight of the notebook is slightly too heavy.
