Treat it right and keep it serviced! – I see a few adverse reviews for the Talon 4-stroke mowers, but the complaints are mostly caused by inappropriate treatment, abuse or non-servicing. Sure, the Talon is not up to the quality of the more expensive brands, but looked after and serviced regularly, they are reliable and have the potential for a long service life. Tips for a long service… Read more
life from your Talon 4-stroke: Keep it out of the weather. Never tip it on its side with the carby/air filter side down as this will cause oil from the crank-case to soak the filter and contaminate the carby. Never over-fill with oil. Turn off the fuel tap. Empty the fuel tank before storing for winter or gum will develop and cause the carburetor parts to seize. Change or at least clean the air and fuel filters every year. Check and clean the spark plug every year. As the steel bases are prone to rust, keep them free of grass clippings with a wash/clean after each use.
Dangerous times – We bought one of these 15 years ago. My first mower. Had it for 10 years while poverty stricken still paying the mortgage. The plastic stop start mechanism on the handle was first to go after about 12 months. I could not find the part. I initially had to turn it on and off using a set of pliers (I had them tied to the mower for easy access). God… Read more
help me if I needed an emergency stop. Then the cable itself snapped and I have to turn it on by permanently jamming the throttle open and off by unplugging the spark plug... My poor neighbours, that was backfire hell for them.
The pull cord snapped after maybe 4 years. I replaced it OK because I could find a generic part.
I am sure I replaced the spark plug at least once and changed the oil at least twice, just normal maintenance. Mower was kept indoors all the time to guard against theft.
The Talon catcher was very sturdy with thick plastic. However, it was still REALLY hard to get the thing in to the back of the mower and I hated to turn the mower off first because how long it too for the engine to stop backfiring. So, more danger just to empty the grass. Quite a nasty machine.
The end came just after we went to trouble of packing it and moving it to our new place. The screw holding the blade sheared off and the blade went for a burton.
There was an 80s vintage looking-like-a-piece-of-rubbish flymo left in the shed of our new house and we moved over to that. Much safer than the Talon. The Talon went in the wheely bin after I took it to pieces with a spanner. I used the flymo for 3.5 years until just this week when it died.
Now looking for a proper mower. We can afford it now.
purchased in 2010 still going strong – Don't know what lawn mowers everyone else got....I've only just replace the governance spring. hasn't missed a beat since purchase. starts 2nd pull every time from cold, cant fault it. I've only cleaned it after use and checked the oil level once a year. Great price and its been fantastic value. Show details
Run a mile from this garbage – Terrible. Do not buy at ANY price. I got to mow my grass twice before the thing clogged up with grass around the exhaust and caught fire. Burned the ignition coil and other bits of plastic, tried to fix it with a replacement coil but it won't start anymore. It was a gutless piece of vibrating junk anyway, all dressed up and looking pretty, but an absolute dud. 0/10.
Lasted 8 years – Pretty happy with the mower, just died, probably only needs a service and it would work again. Catcher after 8 years still hadnt cracked etc even though the dog enjoyed chewing it! Has been a very hardy mover and been used on many different lawns over the past 8 years. overall happy with the purchase Long lasting without much maintenance Show reply
Great value for money, absolutely trouble free – Some people should not be allowed to own any type of machinery, don't want to know what their cars must be like!! Axles do not just bend, they get bent, etc, etc.If it is clogging up, you are probably mowing wet grass, or are not using the catcher or mulch infill. Starts first time, every time, quiet, reliable Doesn't have a stubblie holder on the handle
No real problems – I have found my mower to be quite reliable. It has not rusted or suffered axle problems. It after 7 years has the original plug.It has always started easily but the primer now has to be pumped many more than the suggested 3 times as it seems a back flow valve is not working. It is a heavy mower but that it not a real problem. Only faults I have… Read more
found was that the catcher was damaged early on a by a design fault where a screw extending into the body on the right rear side was hitting the catcher as it was removed. I have since cut this screw down. Reliable, inexpensive and sturdy. Heavy, catcher breaking up.
Terrible – Bunnings and Huskvarna management should have a management retreat consisting of mowing Flemington racecourse and the MCG with this piece of [censored word removed]. The cardboard box it came in entertained my child for 20 minutes. I also brought a sausage at Bunnings supporting the guide dogs whilst purchasing it. Other than that, none. I could… Read more
attach blades to my 10 month old daughters plastic walker and achieve the same result as this mower. The oil plug is better hidden than Jimmy Hoffa and Amelia Earhart combined. The handle was at a perfect height for the average Australian male if we all mowed by pushing with our mowers with our knobs.
Just a terrible mower – Heap of garbage from day one 9 months ago. Accel cable, pull starter, oil leaking from main shaft, bent front axle, going rusty to mention a few. This mower is kept indoors at all times. I think it is ready to take a trip to the tip.
You guys are on Drugs this is a great mower!! – Not sure what everyone of you guys are doing with your mower? Mine has been perfect for the last 5 years, still starts 1st or 2nd pull. Everything is straight, no leaks to speak of. But then I maintain my equipment not just mow and put it away without washing and topping up liquids. When I first got it I made sure everything was firm and… Read more
together.
I still run the original spark plug no problems there, no bent axles either.
All I have replaced is 1 starter rope through wear and tear and I'm about to replace the throttle cable as it is getting a bit old and stiff now. I did adjust this so it revved to full power.
It's a good cheap mower that with some love and care will last for years, 5 years and counting!!! Reliable, Inexpensive, Starts every time, Doesn't burn plugs, Cuts well, easy to get parts for.
Terrible – wished we had thought to read the reviews before purchasing. The crappiest mower I ever did use, easy start but you need that because the bloody thing keeps stalling. My advice DONT BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! looked pretty, price how much time do you have?
Terrible – Got this on Easter Sunday and I did not start it till Monday just to test it, not much lawn at the moment, it did 5 m straight run and everything came apart and massive vibration and a loose mufler where it could not have been screwed back, went back to Bunnings and told them the issue and since it was under a week, they appologies and accpeted… Read more
the return. I am lucky I did that and did not get stock with this rubbish
Put more money and got something better built not this lemon...
DO NOT BUY THIS...
Terrible – I don't like it, it was a waste of money. I can't start it, I don't like how it cuts, I can't get the catcher back in. On the good side, it was cheap although not now that I need to replace it and it folds away nicely. Not much at all! But it was cheap... I can not start it. It is plastic and the fuel tank broke, the under carriage clogs with grass, the lever on the side does not raise up very high so you shave the lawn

Know better, choose better.
Talon Sparrow – Talon Hawk, Try Sparrow because they take more of the grass than this thing. Went well for first 3 mows. Nothing but trouble since. Burns out spark plugs every 2nd or 3rd mow, wont cut anything but light grass, even then struggles. Have had new motor in it, to no effect, in fact worse. I am now told they have bought a new model, Heaven Help Us! Nothing!!!! Wont start, burns plugs, wont cut anything but light grass.
Terrible – I will buy another more reputable brand the next time. Low price was the determining factor, which proved to be a flawed decision. Easy To Start. Mulch operation seems to work well. Until the pull start broke. Had it fixed twice at a cost of $80 all up (replaced the entire pull start mechanism) Starts to stall on dense grass areas. Had it for 2 years now and still working (fingers crossed).
Terrible – I was assured by the man at Bunnings that this was a great buy. Since the mower was in my price range, I thought I was getting a good deal. I was severely wrong. I have had the mower for around 6 months now and it has been back to the shop 5 times already. It's an absolute piece of junk. I would be better off with my old hand push reel mower I had… Read more
years ago. Do yourself a favor, buy a victa. Not much, It looked ok when it was new, that's about all. Where to start. There isn't enough space here to list all the things wrong with this mower.
Bad – I was after a mower and asked my family member who works at Bunnings to pick something decent out for me. That's how I got to choosing this mower. This is my first mower, I am no expert. Even with this I wasn't impressed with the Hawk. It just seemed weak in the engine. Grass would clog up inside the mower quickly and the engine would stop. It… Read more
doesn't have enough grunt to handle a good amount of material.
The other aspects of the mower are good though. But really the most important thing is that it cuts grass well which it doesn't. It uses little petrol. Starts easily enough. Can take a good hose done and still work after wards.
If I had to choose again I would definitely choose another mower. Something that has a stronger motor. Seems tough enough to take a good beating. Engine seems weak. Grass builds up within the mower instead of coming out.
Bad – Throttle cable was bent so mower would not start, this may also explain the lack of power. It has been in the shop for three weeks so far waiting for a cable to be sent from Sydney to Brisbane. Husqvarna handle warranty and not sure if they know what service is about. I have rung them directly every week and still no part, they do have stock. The… Read more
workshop is ready to repair whenever the part arrives. Cannot think of any Very...Very poor support. .
Terrible – This mower is really really bad. Total dud. It starts ok, but revs really low (which I thought was normal for 4 stroke). It chokes on even light grass and even on areas that have already been mowed. If I hold the catcher open, walk at less than 1km/h, and only mow half the mowers width worth of grass it barely hangs on. I have already fixed… Read more
the throttle governor spring and I have checked the air intake, sparky and exhaust but no joy.
All up this mower lasted for 5 hours of use. I'm not going to send it back because it really is that bad that I don't want it returned. I am now going to buy a Honda. Starts first pull Totally gutless, stalls with even light loads
