My lifesaver an excellent microwave/convection oven – This is my second oven from sharp, my first I can’t reme the model number as I had it for 19 years and my daughter still uses it. I can’t remember when I got the one I mentioned here, but I had this now for close to 10 years and it never missed a beat, cooks evenly it doesn’t matter if use microwave only or convection or combined. I bake, i roast… Read more · 1
I cook steam whichever and it’s been a great oven to use. It’s all I ever use and a bonus it’s easy to clean. I can recommend sharp microwaves/convection ovens. I just seen it’s discontinued which is a shame.
Great help in the kitchen – My convectional oven heats to the temperture I set it, once it tells me to add food the temperture drops and it will not cook. I have only had this microwave for two years and I spent $1.000.00 . I was told buy a sharp service care that it cannot be fixed , is this true, they told me I need to buy a new one . Excellent device – We used this microwave oven while renting as most rental ovens are complete rubbish. The Sharp microwave/oven served us very well for over 7 years. We got excellent value out of it and the only trouble we ever had was the waveguide needed replacing and this was our own fault due to not cleaning it well enough. My parents previously owned an older… Read more · 1
model and it served them well for over 10 years. I would definitely buy another if we ever needed one.

Great start ..Dangerous finish – Owned a Sharp convection microwave for 20 years. loved it. R990KW was excellent for 14 months but last week the turntable came off of its tracks during a 2 minute microwave and put a hole in the back panel. Noticed as sparks were flying. Dangerous so 5 to 1 star. Show details
So Disappointed – Purchased the R990K(w) around 12 months ago. For no apparent reason, all of a sudden the small plastic Motor Coupler ceased working. Upon inspection, it was found to have a piece broken off it and thus the turntable would no longer rotate. Being on a disability pension, I saved most of the best part of a year to purchase this item, as my oven at… Read more

It is problem after problem had new part then fuses blow. I am very upset about Sharp just says take to service or never rings back. Show details

Sharp doesn't offer microwave repair options which are affordable – The control board for my sharp convection microwave R990K has failed, The fluorescent display is now too faint to read in daylight. I hope to find someone in South east Qld who has a different fault, in this model oven, so I can repair my oven. The donor oven could be a R990K S or a R990K W Show details
13 yrs and still going strong – I bought my Sharp R990K in 2011ish to replace the previous one after the convection part stopped working. that one was bought in the early 90's, 92 I think. The current one is still going strong with no issues to date. Bummer for those with issues, but if this one chokes, considering the first 2, I'll buy another. Show details
Sharp Microwave Convection Sensor oven – Bought this in 2001 from the Good Guys on Dandenong Road Dandenong. Best buy ever ,I have never had a service, it runs like a dream. So easy to use, has sensor settings for Pies, Rice, Pasta, Fresh Veggies and Frozen Vegies. I hope Sharp never discontinue this Model because its the best model they ever put on the market. It was worth the money I paid $1000.00, and will get another when it wears out. I am impressed greatly Show 2 replies
!8mths old and stopped turning – Well I tried ringing Sharp but alas no, you get an option to a service agent. Umpteen button presses later line goes silent...really! I have the R990KW and the turntable has stopped rotating. I have read a lot of articles here and do not hold out much hope of a resolution. I expect better for the price! very very very disappointed. A must in my kitchen! – I'm devastated to see that this model has been discontinued. I've had 3 units over a period of 20 years and my current machine is at the very least needing repair and quite probably replacing. What do I do now? What model should I be considering next, I love the large size. Show details · 3
Excellent appliance – Thoroughly reliable now for nearly 4 years. The combination of microwave and convection covers all bases and we would be lost without it. Didn't give a 5 star due to annoying beep warning at the end of cooking. (It replaced the equivalent model 13 years old - Convection had failed and the waveguide mica cover caught fire due to oil buildup… Read more · 2

I replaced a thermistor and mica cover < $10- it still runs great even after another 4 years in a rental house.)
Ongoing Fault Within This Model – Hi I work on a small Vessel on the Australian Coast. Our Galley is small, so a Convection Oven is essential. The Product looks good and is functional as a Convection oven. However, we are now on the 3rd R990KW in 14 months. The previous one was 3 months old. The first two had the same fault, the microwave stopped heating. The rest of… Read more
the oven works fine, but what good is a convection microwave without a microwave?
I'm unsure as to why our employer keeps sending the same model out to us, but there is no ordinary way I would purchase one of these for my home.

Really, really disappointed – It would appear that like me, a lot of people who were happy with their previous Sharp convection microwave which lasted quite a number of years and was well made and of very good quality, when it needed replacing have decided to do so with the latest Sharp convection microwave. Like most things these days the quality isn't as good as the previous… Read more
model, chassis not as good, same with the stainless steel interior, however I was determined to stick with Sharp. When I cooked cakes, roast meat, roast vegetables, etc. using convection I found that they were always underdone. I thought it was just me, however when this happened every time I used convection I decided to buy a thermometer to check if the temperatures were correct. After testing multiple times I found the following - after setting pre heat for 200oC when the 'beeper' went off to say the pre heat was over I found that the actual temperature was only 100oC and that it did not reach anywhere near the required temperature, even after 25 minutes it was still around 180oC. I took my microwave to the local agent who replaced the sensor, however he said that as the sensor is next to the heating area that it would probably still be the same, and it is. I now have to guess what heat to set preheat for to get what I want and also guess cooking times. I am really disappointed as my previous Sharp was fantastic. I would not recommend this model.

Not worth the money – My first Sharp microwave lasted 20 years. This one lasted just on 5 years. I bought it for $670. Had 1 repair after 3 years ($300) and now they cannot get the parts for it. Microwave was good to start with. Then it started taking longer to heat food up. I will not be buying another Sharp microwave and I would not recommend this product.

Don't waste your money – Well, if experience is anything to go by, our old sharp microwave, lasted well over 10 years, but this one for the price is absolute crap. We purchased in August 2011 and by 28 November 2011 the HV fuse and HV capacitor went and needed to be replaced. I wanted the entire unit to be replaced, as it was over $700 and suppose to be brand new. They… Read more
fixed it, and guess what less than 5 years now, and the same thing is wrong with it. Goodness knows that we got it, as we thought the convection would mean we could reheat pizza or bake something which would give you crispness to your hot food- that never happened. We basically use it 3-5 times a week, and it did ok just to heat coco, or make rice.
What an expensive piece of crap, and their customer care centre? Well, this leaves a lot to be desired. They should rename it to -do we even give a crap centre.
The cost of getting it looked at is $88, and labour another $120 + cost of parts. I can't really see the worth of spending this much on top of the outlay $700 + the time, and petrol we've already spent getting it to the service centre in port Melbourne. How disappointing.

Carousel rotation interminently – We have owned several Sharp convection microwaves over the years and have been delighted with them. Our previous unit, after about 6 years, had an issue with the carousel not rotating & 'clicking'. My investigation found that it was the carousel motor that was worn, which I found easy to replace once we found a part in Melbourne. It now works… Read more · 2
perfectly. Unfortunately better that the new one, which after owning it for only 13 mths (therefore out of warranty) the same issue has occurred. As I live in Tasmania, and there seems to be no service agents close by to where we live, how/where can I get another carousel motor?
Not very old but seems to take forever to roast – I'm getting increasingly unhappy with newer models of anything coming out lately. My convection microwave takes for ever to roast anything. My previous convections were brilliant. This one does not cut the mustard. I will be taking it back to Harvey Norman. It just is no where near as good as old one. Cakes cook uneven

My 'new' Sharp is a disappointment – I have a sixteen month old 'new' Sharp R990K (W) having been the owner of two R990 (S), one here in Australia and one the UK. Both of the R990 (S) gave years of fantastic service and the last, which is seven years old, is now relegated to use in our outdoor kitchen. standard. It is noisier than our old models, it has cracks in the plastic edges of the door, the old ones only developed these after long use, and pieces of plastic are breaking off, the paint on the body is beginning to peel away from the front edge and finally and of greatest concern the door doesn't align properly with the body of the machine - it's only a few millimetres out but I am concerned about microwave leakage. All said I am very disappointed and fear this machine will not give me the service I had come to expect from my previous Sharp products.

Doesn't spin after 21 month – When we bought this microwave oven, we are happy with its design/look, but now, I give bad rate for this product (Made in Thailand D777), After 14 month using, we can't set clock, and after 21 months using, the microwave oven doesn't turn. we do not know what to do, I mean the new microwave oven is so cheap now.

18 Months old - thermostat gone – Used this a lot and loved the size and convenience. Cost almost $900 and now after 21 months, the convection oven is failing to get up to temperature. Presume the thermostat has gone which seems to be a common theme with this microwave. Customer service didn't help much, just advised me to take it into one of their service centres where no doubt I'll pay several hundred more dollars getting it repaired...

garage sale machine as I couldn't replace this one for the money. It's worthless now, I would have thought a company like Sharp would take pride in their appliances and after finding out about these problems made a replacement part (that lasts), available.

Garbage-Three major faults in 5 years – my first oven lasted 25 years. Over the years I have recommended the sharp convection to friends. My current model bought in april 2009 $850, was noisy from day one. Just out of warranty and the thermostat and turntable motor had stopped working. Second major fault in 5 years. Very disappointed – I have had this microwave/convection oven for 5 years. 2 years ago the door latch stopped working. Last year the convection timer and temperature stopped working. It cost $600 to repair. Only Sharp approved service places will touch it and they charge like highwaymen. Now less than a year later it is sparking and smoking, unusable. Very, very… Read more

Extremely disappointed! – I purchased a Sharp Microwave convection oven (R990KW) just one month ago from Harvey Norman. I reluctantly chose Sharp only because Panasonic no longer have a large convection microwave in white and I don't want stainless steel in my kitchen. and frozen vegetables almost raw. The convection function needs to be used almost flat out in order to cook in the times specified. I can live with those issues. But far, far worse is the fact that just 2 weeks after receiving it, the door stopped springing open when the button was pushed. Now, only 4 weeks afterwards, there are times when I think I won't be able to get my food out of it. This is a major failure and one that shouldn't happen when buying a product from a large corporation like Sharp. A company such as this should be able to do adequate testing to make sure their products can perform satisfactorily in ALL areas. I realise the product is covered by warranty, but WHAT A HASSLE. It is too big and heavy for me to transport back to the store ( and I shouldn't have to!!!). My husband shouldn't have to take time off work to do so, and I shouldn't have to pay someone to pick it up and deliver it.
I am extremely disappointed and would give no stars if I could!

Disappointed – Had mine for 8 years but it just about finished now, the door hing is failing, some plate in the roof of it is sparking and neither can be repaired. Sharp gear used to be exceptional but now I fear it just throw away equipment. Such a shame their reputation is flagging.

So so Disappointed – I have had a Sharp Convention Microwave for over 25 years. taking for a part to arrive from overseas (its now been 3 weeks and still no sign of it even arriving in Australia), will never recommend this product. Disappointed when magnetron blew up after only five years – Our previous Sharp microwave lasted 32 years with only two bulb changes. We replaced it with a Sharp Carousel R990KS LRG CON S/S 900W which only lasted 5 years and one month (one month past the extended warranty!). Overheating – Save your money and avoid this unit. I had a 38L Sharp Combi for 25 years which worked perfectly. Gave it away and bought the R990. It cooks well enough, but the menu is completely non-intuitive: you need to refer to the manual for anything other than simple cooking, and the user interface looks as if it was designed by a pasty chef. Worst of… Read more
all is the heat: there is no cooling fan evident, and the temperature UNDER the unit is so hot, it will scorch any wooden or melamine surface. To mount this in a cabinet, you need a special Sharp built-in unit which costs as much as the microwave. If you really need this unit, then put it on a stone or tiled surface with plenty of space around it for heat dissipation. I sent the unit back 6 months ago complaining about the heat, and they keep on telling me there's nothing wrong with it. Not impressed by Sharp.

VERY, VERY DISAPPOINTED SHARP – My first Sharp Convection Microwave (SCM), which I had for 10 years, was fabulous. However, I now have my 3rd SCM & like the 2nd SCM is useless after normal use. Avoid! – Three months after purchase, convection stopped working. Had it repaired under warranty, but 12 months later the same problem occurred. When it works it's great - just don't expect it to keep working. We have had 3 in 3 years plus 2 rep – Just keeps failing. Turntable motor seizes. Convection fan fails. Convection element fails. Door switches cause earth leakage to trip. Problem is that the problems keep happening and we have had three of them to confirm. What is worse is the last time in the repair shop we meet another customer with the same problem with newer oven less than 12 months old. NOT GOOD ENOUGH SHARP. Our last microwave almost identical lasted 20 years.
