Best Air Conditioners

A reliable air conditioner offers a myriad of benefits. Along with being able to relieve you from the discomfort of blistering heat or teeth-chattering cold, a well-chosen model can also offer better air quality, improved concentration and sleep.

Split system air conditioners

These wall-mounted air conditioners are split into two parts, an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. They’re powerful air conditioners that are effective at cooling (or heating) large rooms and living spaces like lounge rooms. Split system aircons are also friendly on your power bill, as they’re energy efficient. Many are designed using inverter technology, which adjusts compressor speed according to the room’s requirements.

Split system reverse cycle air conditioners are popular, and offer some of the best air conditioners in Australia. They offer dual heating and cooling functions, meaning you can use them in winter as well.

Ducted Air Conditioners

A ducted air conditioner is a long-term investment that’s good if you’re looking for a more permanent way to regulate the temperature in your home. You’ll need to get a professional to install the central unit/fan coil in your roof, which connects to ductwork that transports cool or warm air that’s released into a room through air vents.

You can set different temperatures in different parts of your home, through ‘zoning.’ Alternatively, you can choose to regulate one zone independently without turning any others on, e.g. the main living area.

However, zoning will cost extra, and along with the installation costs, a ducted air conditioner is the most expensive option of all four types.

Window/Wall Air Conditioners

As their name suggests, these can be mounted on either a window or a wall. They’re a more affordable option than a split system or ducted air conditioner, with the cheapest model a Kelvinator window/ wall air conditioner selling for $439. These air conditioners are also easy to install, and available as reverse cycle, making them suitable for all four seasons.

Portable Air Conditioners

These small, moveable air conditioners reach a set temperature by pulling warm air from a room and cooling it, via a refrigerant and an exhaust hose. Any remaining air is vented outside. Like other AC types, many portable models are available with reverse cycle functionality.

To install a portable air conditioner, you’ll need an exhaust point, such as a window or ducted wall. The box will usually come with an exhaust hose, venting kit and instructions.

Overall, there are plenty of choices when it comes to getting an air conditioner for your home or office. If a particular air conditioner type sounds appealing, simply scroll down to select from the filters on the left.
