Best Baby Carriers

The right baby carrier keeps your baby close, even when you don’t have any spare hands to carry them. This can promote parent and baby bonding, gently helps your baby transition from womb to world, and lets you cross tasks off your to-do list more easily.

Types of Baby Carriers:

Wraps

These involve wrapping a large piece of fabric tightly around your body and baby’s body. You may need to practise a few times to get the hang of it, especially if you’re new to baby wrapping. The sturdiest baby wraps are made from cotton, linen, wool or hemp, and are called woven wraps. You can even wear your baby on your back using a woven wrap.

Wring slings

A wring sling is like a version of a woven wrap that has rings below the shoulder. After threading the fabric through the rings and putting the sling on yourself, you can wrap your baby from bottom to top (shoulders). With a ring sling, you can front carry, back carry or hip carry. Adjust the looseness or tightness by pulling on the fabric or pushing it back through rings.

Soft structured carriers (or SSCs)

These come with padded shoulder straps and a buckled, padded waistband. They are supportive and don’t require much practise to use (other than figuring out which positions your baby likes to rest in best). SSCs may have options for front-carry facing in, front-carry facing out, back carry and hip carry.

Less common baby carriers include mei tai carriers, and frame/backpack carriers (mainly for hiking with toddlers).

Baby Carrier Quick Tips

  • Make sure the carrier you choose is age appropriate for your baby. For example, some carriers aren’t suitable for newborns or babies that can’t hold their heads up.
  • Look for a carrier that evenly distributes weight and mainly puts it on your hips (especially in a structured soft carrier).
  • Choose a carrier that will be comfortable to wear year-round. Some SSCs come with newborn inserts, but these can often get hot and heavy in summer.

Latest review: It's so easy to use and very sturdy. My little one falls asleep in minutes! I was looking at a few other brands such as the wraps but they look so complicated, not to mention pricey! I'm so glad I
