Volkswagen Caddy Mk.4
Caddy Maxi Crewvan is GREATThis new van replaced a short wheel-base Renault Kangoo, and is a quantum leap ahead. More power, even if it is a 1.2 turbo, more driveability, more space, very comfortable, and the dash and control l…ayout is very similar to my Tiguan, so there is no problem with swapping from one to the other. Having the people mover version gave me better sound insulation in the back than if I had bought the van version, and with the back row of seats out, I have 5 seats and stacks of workspace. I would have preferred barn doors, but there was no reversing camera option without the lifting door, which is a bit big to lift for my small girl workers. The 7-speed dual clutch is smooth, but is a bit reluctant to reverse slowly up a hill - don't touch the brake, just let it creep along.

Volkswagen Tiguan 5N Highline 140TDI
Just love this carThis car cost twice what my first house cost to build, back in 1976, but I love it. Smooth, silky gear changes that are barely noticeable, power to move when I want it, gadgets to help make up for my …increasing loss of faculties, space, comfort and that amazing panoramic sunroof. Clever bright lighting to help me find the car and get into it, to see around corners and read street numbers, the instrument panel that I can change around, the only thing it lacks is a massaging function on the seat, which is an option overseas. The options don't allow me to call it a 140 TDI R-Line, but that is what it is. I use the radar cruise control and lane control full-time, but disable the stop-start function. Back-seaters love the legroom and the clever fold-up tables and coffee-cup holder. And today with an armful of golf clubs, the foot-waving rear hatch opening made things easier. This is one well-equipped car.

Renault Trafic X83.III
The auto is clunkyThe "auto" transmission can have a very nasty shift down to first when slowly approaching a stop, and sometimes the change up to second is like a learner driver in a manual. It has been back to the de…aler for a factory reset 3 times, and on the fourth, they changed the clutch. But it still happens. It also tries to change up too soon when climbing a hill, resulting in a slow-down and a change back to first - on a slippery steep driveway, this results in some wheelspin on takeoff and some nasty clutch smells.
Other than that, it is a great van, but the LWB has a dismal turning circle, and even with the reversing camera installed I have still nudged a couple of walls.
As others have said, it needs more paperwork storage (an overhead bin like in my Kangoo!!) and the centre pax headrest neatly removes most of the rear view mirror visibility. GPS was not an option on this model, so I fitted my own.
