Great bike! Excellent for beginners!
The 2019 Kawasaki Z400 ABS is an excellent bike and great for a beginner! Breakdown of review below:
Purchased in May 2019 I picked the bike up brand new for $6,299 including on road costs. Great price however in terms of bike selection I didnt really have another choice in that price bracket. There was a big jump in price from this bike - the next one up was 11k.
The engine is great. For a 400 - there is adequate power and accelaration. I have an Akrapovic slip-on exhaust which I feel is a must - sounds great and drivers can hear you coming! Not too loud but just right....Engine temp hovers at close to high, but so far, everytime it hits 5/6 bars the cooler fan kicks in and lowers it to 3/6 or 4/6 bars. HANDLING Handling is great - bike is very light and all manouverability & cornering is effortless. Throttle is slightly jumpy but you get used to it. Clutch (or "slipper clutch") is very easy & smooth. COMFORT Comfort is great. I dont know why manufacturers can't make more comfortable seats across the board. I know it's not a cruiser, but its not a sports bike either. Your position is almost upright so why can't they have a comfort seat as an option? Foot brake & gear shifter are movable which is great; as the stock position was uncomfortable for my ankle. However there is only a small allowance. DASH The dash is great with everything you need on there. Would have been a nice extra to have a temperature reading on there as well. FUEL Fuel consumption is good as well. I can fill up (14l) for around $18-$20 and a full tank gets me around 320-330 km. ACCESSORIES As this is brand new model, there are limited accessories available at this stage. The front visor is short which means more wind hitting you, and the only alternative visor seems too long - would have been great to have another option which is just 2-3cm higher than the stock visor. Radiator guard is a must and you can pick up a nice one off ebay for $30. I also got the helmet lock which suits helmets with a D chain. I ended up buying the shark skwal helmet which doesn't have a D latch so it's very tricky to latch the helmet in the lock. STORAGE Clearly no storage. There is a TINY spot underneath the seats but it wouldnt even close with my wallet in there so that was pointless. I dont like the look of top boxes (although handy) so i just ride with a backpack. Speaking of which - its very tricky trying to lock the passenger seat without slamming it down hard. APPEARANCE Looks great! two colour options of green & red (with black). Would have been nice to have a matt green instead. CONCLUSION A great bike - especially for a beginner! Highly recommended! (
