Dishonest dealings and threatening behaviour
I had an AMEX card for many years and was a loyal customer. When lockdown occurred, I asked for a payment pause because I had no work, which they granted. I received harassing phone calls, several times a week, letters of final demand, and a letter to appear in court for my missed payments during the 'pause'. Then they advised the credit rating company that I had missed payments and when I rang them to enquire about this mix up they told me "it was their legal obligation to report it". Even though I had a payment pause. They lied and discredited me because I left them. The Ombudsman looks very good right now.
The Card that you can not make payments to easily as can only handle one payment every 72 hours.
AMEX can only process on line payments or by telephone payment once every 72 hours. No where on their web site does it state that their system is limited to only one direct or telephone payment every 72 hr period. Thus if an employer reimburses you for expenses directly to AMEX you can not process a payment to your account until 72 hours later which translates really into 3.5 days. BPAY takes as long as 96 hours to go through and appear as paid on your statement instead of the next day. In to-days age of OSKO payments and electronic paym...ent gateways it is quite absurd that an organization can only receive a payment on an account once every 72 hours, or it is a deliberate. AMEX, it would seem to have this as a deliberate marketing ploy to make late fees and interest out of customers, or their system are that antiquated. AMEX maybe a great card to use but a shocker when it comes to try and make payments to. A customer of 25 plus years this is not good enough in to-days age of modern banking transactions. There is also no online email query or chat line from your user sign in to your account.
Lots of Promise, No Value
I've been a member since 2003, dutifully paid my card off on time, happily paid my fees.
They lured me with promises of flights/ points, access to lounges, travel vouchers, etc. It all sounded great.
But nearly a couple of decades later, having done the math, it's apparent that I've probably wasted more than half of what I'd spent. And most of their stuff is impossible to use if you don't live in America.
Couple that with the constant embarrassment of asking "do you accept Amex?" To try and beg for points like a povo, and the subsequent subtle...eyerolls from the cashier...I've decided to give up trying to extract my sad, worthless points on their behalf. Add to that their less than stellar follow up and customer service, and I'm a bit annoyed for ever signing up in the first place. Would strongly not recommend.
AFR removed after 6 months
As an Amex Platinum cardholders for over a decade I have been stunned by the conduct of Amex
Paid my $1450 fee in Dec 2020 after much thought as Covid obviously impacted on the travel benefits of this expensive card
AFR digital subscription was the plus and I paid for the card
Last week I received an email which stated the AFR subscription will no longer be available and finish 30 June 2021
I paid in good faith and regard this action as bordering on false and misleading conduct
Australian Banks and others were slammed during Royal Commission f...
Card is great. Insurance from Chubb is worthless.
American Express are great and the features of the card are fantastic. The travel insurance from Chubb is a joke though. I had to make a claim against the policy and even Amex were stunned by their Houdini-like antics to get out of their responsibility.
Travel Credit that expires 31st March 2021?? Of course! Amex is a joke! Take your money with offers then don't honour your $450 yearly fee! Of course no one wants to use Amex!! No Integrity!
Waste of Money AVOID at all costs. Pathetic service.
Absolutely ABYSMAL service. All off shore one person not capable of addressing issues. Poorly trained staff. Enquiry Passed on & on from one to another.
AMEX cards are Rarely accepted by vendors and they charge extra to use. Which more than offsets THE points benefits.
Points system is a SCAM, they charge an annual fee on top of the card fee. Points are pretty much worthless.
It would appear they sell your data.
Pleanty of card providers out there. AMEX days are numbered.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Benefits not worth the expensive annual fee
Bad benefits for the amount of annual fee you have to pay ($1450). Annual fee went from $1200 to $1450 but the overall benefit you get has gone down down down. Before it was 1 to 1 Qantas point but now it is 2 to 1 Qantas point. That's alot! When I contacted Amex, they just bombard me with all the benefits the card gives (which I don't use or can't use). At the current Covid-19 locked away world, I can't use my hotel stay, airport lounges, travel credits etc. The customer service just don't care about making it more rewarding for the existing m...ember at the current Covid-19 world. They just keep replying that we have all these benefits - which we can't use. And, keep saying they understand what I am saying but unwilling to reduce annual fee or consider 1 to 1 Qantas point transfer. I am planning to cancel this stupid card. Not worth it at all.
The benefits are good in theory
I ordered this card as the travel and hotel benefits were appealing (in theory). I was drawn to the HOTELS & RESORTS benefit so within an hour or getting the card, I went online to book a hotel stay. I found that for the vast majority of hotels, the HOTELS & RESORTS rate was between 20%-30% more expensive than any advertised rate. I spent an hour checking hotels around the world and the same inflated rates were showing. I couldn’t even see that rate until I got the card so I couldn’t compare rates before applying. I called the platinum concierg...e and was told this was standard practice. Paying more for a service in turn voids the supposed $700 benefits as you are paying more out of pocket. I in turn cancelled the card as what is the point of paying an annual $1450 fee if you have to pay a higher premium to get the benefits.
Shocking service with Amex travel actually provide by Expedia!!
Utterly shocking service from Amex travel which is used as a key benefit for signing up for this card! Booked a hotel in Byron Bay at a boutique hotel for a specific poolside studio and on arrival was told the booking had actually been done through Expedia who had on sold a cheaper room at two thirds of the rate I had paid which was nowhere near the quality of the room I had booked. Rude and obnoxious service from Amex travel who blamed their 'supplier' Expedia who refused to sort it out or provide any form of refund. After several calls they f...inally offered us a room in another hotel which again was nowhere near the standard and price of the room I had originally booked and paid for via their travel portal. Utterly shocking for such an expensive annual fee card! If you are looking to take out this card for travel bookings then avoid like the plague!!!
Bye Bye !!
Because Amex declined my chargeback request for outstanding monies that my travel agent refused to refund on a trip my wife & i couldn't take this year ..They've just lost a customer who spends 50K a year on his platinum.
How dumb can some companies be !!!
This card is fantastic
The customer service on this card is excellent. Any time you need to contact the call centre they are knowledgeable and helpful. The annual fee is on the high side but worth it for the savings in travel insurances and extended warranties.
If you travel a lot its a fantastic card to have.
It's expensive but if you travel a lot you get your annual fee back and more. The best thing about it is the fantastic Chubb travel insurance which is amazing! I recently had a trip to Europe which turned out to be an insurance nightmare from lost luggage to a smashed iPhone and the multitude of issues that arose as a result of the COVID19 disaster which took place in the middle of the trip. The complimentary platinum insurance which comes with the card paid out everything, including the unexpected repatriation costs to Australia. I hear a lot ...of travel insurance companies aren't doing the right thing but I can't fault this one. If you know someone with a platinum card they can send you a link which will start you with 90,000 points and they get another 30,000 which is pretty good too. I've been a member for about 10 years.
pathetic customer service.
Their customer service is essentially non existent.
Don't fool yourself to think the travel insurance is helpful.
I see absolutely no value in any product provided by AMEX and will gladly not be using them in the future.
Three times the annual fee of the same card in America
Company is ripping Australians off charging $1450, vs $550 for exactly the same thing (actually technically we get less, being less offers etc we can use) so that is almost 3 times the annual fee for less beniefts.
Again another company ripping Australians off.
