Scam - Beware
I signed on for the "free trial" for 14 days. How to give lots of details including my MasterCard in case I wanted to extend beyond the "free trial". Without any communications, Ancestry charged my credit card for a recurring monthly charge. Only after a lot of problems and calls did I get this reversed.
Absolutely atrocious customer service and a total scam
So apparently AncestryDNA don't include return shipping bags with their Ancenstry DNA gift kits. Yes you heard me right, they force the person whom the gift is for to cough up money to return the kit. They then claim they are included when I had none in the box. When I politely insisted that there was no return mailing bag included, they denied a simple gesture which would have turned a negative situation into a highly positive one. Heed these negative reviews, this company is run with greed and apathy and their employees have no idea how to support their customers. Based on my single interaction with them, I will never again invest any money in them again nor recommend them to anyone I know.
I waited over the 6-8 weeks waiting period for my results. I contacted them to see what was happening with my test , to be told they never received it. However I kept the tracking number from postage and found out it had been delivered and received. Does this company just take peoples DNA? Seems like it. Very disappointing. Choose a different company for DNA testing
Was given the DNA kit for a birthday and the results have been amazing.
I have located two half siblings I knew nothing about and through these connections have been able to find a lot of answers about my enigma father and his family. Information has at times been confronting, but after a bit of time processing it, has made me feel a bit more whole about my heritage and family history.
Got overcharged $100
I’m giving ancestry 3 stars because I’ve wanted to find out my lineage for around 15 years and with ancestry I was able to do just that.
When I got the DNA results back a pop up came up asking if I’d like to try a free trial, and it would be $12.99 per month thereafter. I knew absolutely nothing about my family tree, so I signed up and didn’t mind paying that much per month as I was really enjoying using the website.
Fast forward to today, instead of $12.99 they had charged me $99.99! When I went into my account I saw that price was only va...lid for a month too! Had to call the company 4 different times as all the voices on the other end were extremely muffled (if you’re hard of hearing, you stand no chance being able to understand them). Eventually got told that in order for it to be $12.99 per month, I would have to have cancelled my trial before the trial period, then re-sign back up on the $12.99 subscription, otherwise I would be changed $99 per month.
Disaster from the beginning - hope the results are better...
My 13 year-old has been pestering me for a DNA ancestry kit. Based on reviews, statements made by scientists and basic common sense, the results are no more than entertainment. The whole ancestry DNA thing is no more than a scam as has been evidenced in investigative reports on the matter.
Never the less, I caved into my son's demands and ordered an AncestryDNA kit. It arrived within a few days. That was easy. Now comes the bad part:
1. After my son spat into a vile, the instructions asked me to screw on a cap with a blue fluid in it. The blue...
I have two unauthorised charges from Ancestry.com to my Amex card. I have tried several times to contact them for a refund and to halt the fraud charges. I have received one response with a telephone number to call which is NOT CONNECTED!!! Avoid them at all cost.
Currently, big on advertising, Ancestry.com has proven very disappointing. They recently offered a $40 for 4 months access special which actually denied access to much of the data and then totally locked me out after a month. Much of the genealogical information seems to be compiled by people for whom English is not their first language, consequently, researching the data bases can confusing, misleading and incorrect.
Not worth paying monthly memberships
My mum had her DNA done and that was wonderful. Wanting to delve deeper and search for information, we were tempted by the FREE trial, with subsequent monthly repayments of $59.99 a month AUD. We were registered for 5 months and found the monthly membership to be a complete & utter WASTE OF MONEY. The searches were of no help to us. I only found one passenger shipping log for one ancestor. I'm disgusted, that they can do this, when during some months we did no searches at all.
Incorrect and misleading information
My family name Byers not byres the AncestryDNA was trying to lead me to Byres which is incorrect, my DNA matched with a byres and others but the connection of relationships was not my Byers or their Byres. This can cause the two different family names to be merged together on people’s family trees. If you don’t know anything about your history be careful as you can be lead down the wrong path. I knew enough to realise my DNA match to a byrer was not the main family connection, sure my DNA matches but in 3 ways not the main way Byers!! It’s ver...y confusing. My great great grandfather was Stephen Byers yet a DNA match had a family related to Stephen byres, totally different!! A person I matched to has created a tree and added Byers and byres together which is completely wrong, she knows nothing about her byres but I knew enough about my Byers to know it’s not correct. Be careful!!
The greatest joke.
Extraordinary. I was so keen to have my dna test. Got the results 3 weeks later. Just to read circles on a European map. And 7 words. That was it. Never been so conned in my life. And that my dear friends is the best lesson of all. Plus, all the results were wrong. We are still laughing about it. But poorer.
Just taking your money$$$!!! Zero stars
This test easy to do and results come back within 3 weeks. I paid $90! (money poorly spent).
Really disappointed with the skimpy results. They don’t give much information, so it’s not a very comprehensive description. I had completed livingdna prior to this, and livingdna gave so much more information. For example, your mother and father’s haplogroup, what percentage of other populations share your haplogroup, overall percentage, and specfic percentage breakdown. Ancestry used to provide this but decided they have made enough money already, an...d continue to make more money ripping people off (so they have long stopped giving these other important details). For this reason the percentages were nothing alike, and a lot of details were missing. I would suggest livingdna. And try another company too. Always good to do at least two tests (I wish I had chosen one of the other companies). Having the largest database is really not a good reason to choose ancestry.com, because they don’t conduct the tests which give you most of the vital information!
Ancelling Ancestry is very difficult
I had a look at Ancestry.com and decided to end the Free Trial. I follwed their instructions and believed all was cancelled. They kept billing me however. When i tried to cancel again their process their site takes you through a ridiculous number of misleading steps. I finallt got there but they refuse to refund me anything.
Excellent Resources Growing with Time: DNA a good start
I have been a member for nearly 10 years. I have seen the change and improvements over this time and still use other resources for confirmation of information etc.
My main criticism is that it is very expensive and would be used more widely if it was more affordable. ANCESTRY is only worth it if you use it well.
I have never had a problem cancelling my subscription. The links are clearly found in the account settings. Having said that; it is clear the finer print for many reviewers needs to be more prominent. Ancestry should respond to these...
Extremely vague results, not like the ads you see on TV where people get percentages down to 1%
I could be anything, convinced that they just use your surname to guess ethnicity,
waste of money, very disappointed
Zero stars if I could.
Zero stars if I could. Signed up for the free trial and this wasn’t useful (couldn’t locate any ancestors) so stopped using it after 1 day. 1 year later I was going through credit card statements and found I had been charged AU$600 by ‘ANC*ANCESTRY.COM’. Thought this was a scam, and then did some investigation. Turns out my free trial was automatically rolled into a paid service without any notification provided to me - no emails, invoices, receipts or mentions I would be charged.
The website says you have to telephone to cancel or receive ref...unds. However, it is an American number and I live in Australia. Sent them a message and they wrote back that they could not return the charges they took because it was in their dodgy T&Cs. Avoid at all costs. Do not trust this thieving organisation.
DNA test is a total waste of time. Go somewhere else.
Dad basically scammed out of money with this result. The result took more than 6 months to get and he only got it because he contacted support. Do not expect anything other than a unexplained % of where you come from, doesn't even let you know if it is a paternal or maternal test. There is a map with a circle around the countries it picks up. That's it, zip, nothing else. Really it is a absolute waste of $130. If you want a test go somewhere else. 0 stars for the DNA test, 2 stars because the lady at support was nice and patience with my father on finding the results. The whole thing is aimed at you getting a subscription to their family tree subscription service as it teases more information if you sign up to that.
“Customer service” - I’ve had a very poor experience.
Whatever you do, do NOT SIGN anything with these people. I signed in for a 14 DAY LOOK and immediately tried to cancel it several times. Thought I had been successful but now I’ve been charged $129.00 for NOTHING and I can’t get them to take me off or refund me because apparently I signed up and should have cancelled. I tried and tried to cancel! Still stuck on there. I’m hoping some public airing of my experience might help me. I never should have “had a look”
The information gathered from Ancestry.com is invaluable but their policies on renewal need to be more transparent. BE WARNED - RENEWAL IS AUTOMATIC. While the small print in the T&Cs say it will be automatically renewed, I did not receive any notification that they were about to renew it nor did I receive any confirmation that they had renewed it. My only notification was the bill appearing on my bank statement. I was able to cancel but it cost me one month subscription.
DNA results not informative enough
I recently had my DNA checked via Ancestry DNA.
The results were very general and did not offer much in the way of information.
What does 98% Irish and Scottish (without a breakdown on percent for each) tell me?
Their advertising implies that the service is far better, than it is.
Waste of money and time.
Questions & Answers
good morning I purchased a kit for my grand daughter and it doesnt seem as much information as I though it would have the bar code on the box was 487142932922 AU
hoping you can help?
Regards Pearl Tilley
I am trying to find my results
Sorry but all i can say is good luck!! Unfortunately my experience with Ancestry.com tells me they are not reliable and are hit and miss with their results. Try another DNA provider
Not good. My cousin has done accurate research about our family’s heritage. I got my DNA estimate with my heritage and it was quite inaccurate in comparison to the research. Not recommended.
