APIA are for themselves..NOT Pensioners
I have been a customer with APIA for a couple of years and have had an impeccable driving record for 55 years and have NEVER claimed on an insurance policy...some weeks ago I had my car damaged by a driver on a Fork lift and was told by APIA's assessor that the car is a write off & the accident was not my fault , therefore I would not have to pay the $600 excess.... APIA has paid my claim minus the $600 excess ( I have had a promise that they will try to get the excess back from the party at fault-- I won't hold my breath) and also deducted...the 10 remaining monthly payments amounting to around $300...and now,even though I have been ripped off for $900 they have today continued to take a further the monthly payment for my vehicle which is written off.......My advice is DO NOT TO DEAL WITH THEM...
APIA were easy to deal with, delivered what they promised. I am very impressed
I am a relatively new APIA customer and found their prices competitive, the service very good, no fuss and good followup.
I plan to convert all my insurance to them over time.
ANOTHER UNHAPPY CUSTOMER
NEVER DEAL WITH THESE SCAMMERS!!! Brand new car worth $37,800 with under 300kms was rear ended 4 days after purchase date with minimum $26,000 worth of damage including the chassis which voids all my 7 year warranty so instead of a replacement vehicle they want to fix it, if I wanted a second hand car I would have bought one! They go against what you as the customer want! Lawyers are getting involved to solve this matter because they’re too incompetent to do so professionally! Spread the word and go with any other company!!!
Screwed Over Big Time
My original policy enabled me to pick my repairer, which I had previously done. Tried this June and I was told I had received a PDF that my policy had changed. Yeah, NA. Apia's preferred repairer is Capital Smart (who don't work on a Friday). My guy was ready to go and provide a courtesy car. We had planned to go away, before the 2nd lock down and I felt I didn't have time up my sleeve for the Ombudsman. Was going to pick my car up on a Thursday, got a call manager wasn't satisfied with the paint job and I could pick it up Monday. Okay, that se...emed like a good thing. However, Monday came and I was told they had received the wrong bonnet...pick it up Tuesday. Tuesday came and I was told, you never will believe this...they sent the wrong bonnet again. All this time I was paying for a hire car, as my guy always had a courtesy car. I rang Apia, told them the story and they assured me my car would be ready Wednesday. It was ready Wednesday and a consultant offered me $200 for being mucked around so much. Go to drop my husband at work....passenger side door won't open (this makes my car un-roadworthy). Back on the phone again, told consultant and got the answer "we can tow you"...excellent, I need a tow to the supermarket and back. Took car to my guy and he listed 13 things that weren't up to scratch. The back story is, I lost my job and a consultant rang me about job seeker. All in all Apia has 1. Cost me my job 2. Cost me hire car fees 3. Got back an un-roadworthy car. Now that I am no longer working, I am passing this on to the Ombudsman. I am waiting for "their assessor" to contact me. Hell will freeze over before I take my car back to Capital Not so Smart.
16% increase in premium is excessive
Received my renewal notice and was initially surprised at the increase in the premium. On further perusal of the documentation it came to light that my car was insured for the same amount as the previous year (I don’t think a Camry would hold its value, but maybe they do), but more surprising was the 16% increase . There was a blurb as to why this was the case, but sorry, the blurb did not wash. I did phone and advised that I would be cancelling the policy, as I had got a quote over the phone from RACV for some $240 less. Exactly the same mark...et value and excess, so apples compared to apples. The officer came back with a loyalty discount of $40 odd. Given I currently have 2 vehicles both Insured with APIA for over 6 years, no explanation was given as to why the supposed loyalty discount was not applied in the first instance. I do not believe that APIA really has the interests of seniors and pensioners at heart. APIA’s interest is APIA’s, but clever marketing implies they are looking after the seniors market . Shop around, get some quotes , you will be surprised.
Wouldn't touch it with my enemy's vehicle
Shocking service & result. They wrote off my car without even phoning me so the first I knew of what was going on was when I got notification from the Dept of Transport of my plates being returned! So started 3 months of absolute hell-waiting hours to get through then,dealing with people who had no authority to speak with me. Supervisor telling me I was wrong & that my number plates were still on my vehicle!?! Saying she would call me back & never did. Passed on to second Supervisor. Same treatment. At 61 years of age, after weeks of being mes...sed around,I had to get my male Friend to act on my behalf in order to start resolution happening!An Absolute disgrace Apia,you should be ashamed of yourselves! Wake up! This is 2020!!! Then... the First Assessor, again,couldn't do anything so I was passed on to next one! Apia only got one quote & what a surprise! It was $1000 more than the value of my car,according to the "repairers" they use. Eventually,this Assessor said I must pay the $500 to get my own vehicle back & that he would put in a separate Claim for payment to get my vehicle back on the road,plus extra for the time & effort I had to go to in order to get my car back. I said didn't want to take payment before EVERYTHING was finalized with Apia.He assured me that this was the best way forward & that I would "more likely than not" receive payment for the new claim,especially as it would be reviewed by an "independent & unbiased" reviewer. So I trusted him. Took the money,minus what they charged me for my own car & took my car to my own Mechanics. What champions! Magnificent Martino's! They got the new parts within 5 days that Apia's "repairers" said they couldn't get! Martinos fixed my car plus did extra such as fitting s new wheel strut as an extra safety precaution -which was not quoted for by Apia's "repairers". They fixed all the scrapes & scratches on my precious Little Car & gave me 2 new tyres,that needed replacing & weren't covered by Apia's quote! They comprehensively checked my car over & paid to take it over the Pits for me. And.... Came in at $2107.45 CHEAPER THAN APIA'S "repairers" QUOTE!!! And I got my car back within 8 days!!! Not 3.5 MONTHS!!! And,I am very pleased to say... She's driving like a dream. I am so glad that she wasn't scrapped or sold to someone else for less than what I had to buy her back for. And,guess what??? My "other" claim was turned down by the "independent,unbiased reviewer in an email with a "Suncorp" letterhead!!!!! I phoned to cancel the other policies I had with Apia this morning & was so relieved to put the phone down after I was again told "that Apia always do their very best for each & every Customer of theirs & that she is sorry that "I FEEL that they didn't treat me well"?!? REALLY??? How would she even begin to know how I was treated! STOP putting the blame on your Customers & START treating them well,especially loyal & faithful Customers!! When &/if you mess up,please acknowledge that honestly & openly & rectify ASAP & don't try to hide behind "fine print". WRONG is WRONG & never can be RIGHT,no matter what! Very disappointing treatment. I will DEFINITELY NEVER BE BACK FOR MORE! And,wouldn't recommend Apia to my worst enemy.
Dishonest, incompetent, inefficient, infuriating overseas call centre
They insisted that I use their repairer and that I had selected this option on the original policy . I asked several times for a PDF of the policy but it never came.
They have a call centre in The Philippines staffed by people with poor English skills.They made numerous mistakes which were IMPOSSIBLE to sort out because of the language skills.
I found myself doing a lot of the work that they should have done.
Two final points:
1. Don't ever ever use Apia.
2. Don t believe the good reviews. The word choice, style of expression etc point to them being written by 1 or 2 individuals but you probably guessed that.
over the last 3 years.... the premium rose from $50 a month to over $70 a month this year $853 for the year for a 10 year old Commodore...no claims ....got a quote from RACV....$256 cheaper....Apia have a kilometre range of 5000 to 10000 kilometre ....for that discount ??? RACV have no range restriction....
Very long time to get car assessed
had my parked car damaged badly 2 weeks ago and have been told still has not been assessed I find this far too long to wait, not happy with time

Turning 50 recently, I switched my car insurance over to APIA, looking to benefit from lower premiums, what I didn't realise was the true cost of switching.
Needing to fix my vehicle after a minor accident, the service I've encountered has been nothing by a disaster. Having to leave my vehicle for days on end for inspection assessment, needing to go to multiple repairers, waiting weeks to have it fixed and having to travel +40 mins to the nearest repair who could do the work. The time and money wasted can't justifies the small cost saving.
Their ad says 'I wish that I knew what I know now', too right. Don't use APIA, you pay for what you get. Going back to Coles Car insurance by far a better offering.
After receiving my car insurance renewal I noticed that my premium was 8.7 % higher than the previous year and to add insult to injury my car was insured for $1400 less I called APIA to see if they could do less but the best they could do was take $30,00 a year of the price even though i had been quoted a policy that was $210 a year lees for an identical policy. This company promotes itself as looking after pensioners but in my opinion pensioners would be better served by shopping around for a better quote from a insurance company that looks after your needs and does not treat you like your a idiot.
Red Tape Trying To Delay Claim
My aunt tried to authorise me as a third party who can talk to APIA about her recent car accident claim because her English is not good and was put through obstacles with only one aim - delay our lodgement of the claim. With all other companies we deal with all my aunt has to do is to have an interpreter on the phone helping her to translate then she can give the company my name and contact details so that the company can talk to me later about the matters she wants me to handle for her. NO, NOT Apia ! They insist I MUST be present next to ...her just to give a phone authorisation to them ! I think APIA think only they work but nobody else does ! So its now needs to be on the weekend before we can do that sort of authorisation with them because I don't live close to her and I work full time. Now I have to make a trip JUST to make APIA happy. Only reason I can think of why they do that is this will delay the lodgement of the claim by a week. WORSE company EVER (so far) I have to deal with !
Would definitely recommend APIA car insurance
We lodged an online claim on Sunday afternoon, APIA rang back on Monday and the car got picked up by a tow truck within an hour or so. As we live in country Tas this is quite remarkable. Car was taken to be assessed. Since it was written-off we had pay-out in our bank account by Friday of the same week. Super quick and friendly.

I spoke about how I got car insurance with them in my house & contents insurance review on this site. I am now very glad I got car insurance too... as APIA continues to shine. This time it was for what ended up being a total write off on my motor vehicle, just before Chrissy in 2019. This claim has now been paid, and is in my account.
APIA sends you off to SMART for the assessment and the fix of your car if it is not too difficult. In this case upon initial inspection mine proved to be, and it went to another repairer who deals with the bigger...and more complex evaluations. Both car assessment/repair entities here (in SE Qld) were highly professional, great communicators and rapid. The whole thing was made utterly painless by APIA (especially after the initial trauma of it all) and they were 5 star sterling in their service the whole time. Yes motor is a different division to house. But they did this perfect job whilst the whole house insurance sector is undoubtedly simultaneously reeling from payouts for the massive fires and home losses of late 2019. Wow. Thank you APIA--I still just cannot recommend them enough.
Questions & Answers
I have lodged a claim with APIA, for damage to my car by a third party. But I was told by APIA that I have to pay the excess upfront, and I'll get it refunded "IF things work out with the third party"! I am having anxiety over the idea that I might get stuck with the $825 excess bill! This seems so wrong, when I'm the victim!
