Could have been great.
The good. Picture quality & Audio. Easiest to use remote I've yet encountered. Theoretically all your Itunes downloads available.
The bad. Homesharing is a complete waste of time. Unless the PC/Mac where you download and sync your Apple devices is turned on Homesharing with the Apple TV DOES NOT WORK. So for instance if your at work, and your kids are at home they cant access the content you've previously purchased (unless they stream it), even if it's physically sitting on a NAS sitting right next to the Apple TV unless the PC/Laptop/Mac th...at controls the shared library is also at home (i.e not the laptop you take to work) and switched on. Just dumb. The only solution to this is to stream the media you have already purchased and downloaded. So Homesharing really isn't Homesharing unless your at home with the other members of your family. Too bad if you have to go to work. Its a simple mistake that just pulls this device completely undone as a single device for playback of previously purchased films, or even your own media such as your CD collection that you've ripped to itunes. Have used a Boxee Box and a variety of other devices, the Apple TV is the only one I've come across that has excelled at utterly screwing up the sharing and playback of legitimately purchased media with your family members.
Don't buy into the hype
Primarily bought this to watch our iTunes movies on the big TV. We had quite a collection of already purchased movies and music. IF you want the Apple TV for this purpose don't do it.
I bought a movie from iTunes and it took 5 hours to be ready to watch. I accepted this. But watching our already purchased movies was the same. Sorry but no. Its still 4 to 7 hours each and every time. I thought this couldn't be right so I spoke to our ISP and then to Apple. The conclusion is the movies aspect is not for the Australian market. If you want to...

Great Product, Works Well
This is the best Apple TV to date as it has plenty of Apps including ones for Stan, Netflix, Presto, ABC iView, SBS On Demand, Youtube and most streaming content providers in Australia and Sports content.
There is a range of Apps available for a wide variety of other things and of course more Apps are being developed everyday.
It also has a range of games to play via your remote control or you can purchase a Bluetooth games controller.
You can view the content displayed on your desktop Mac's monitor on your Apple TV via Airplay and H...ome Sharing permits any Video, Music or Photo content stored on your Mac to be viewed on your Apple TV 4. You can use a wireless keyboard and mouse to control your desktop Mac and surf the net, play games etc. from the comfort of your couch and have Airplay stream it all to a large screen TV via Apple TV 4.
No words... Apart from disappointed.
Day1. Follow instructions to set up Apple TV. All good. Load Netflix, some favourite games. All good.
Day 1.5. Go to use Apple TV again and I'm met with a system restore required. What? Ugh, OK. Follow instructions and realise the cable required to connect to iTunes is not supplied. Middle of the night and I can't use my new toy. Fair enough I had to supply my own HDMI cable, but to not supply an essential cable to restore this junk within the FIRST DAY !! Is unacceptable! This pos is going back to the store for a full refund tomorrow.
Nice controls. BUT, and its a very big BUT. An absolute disaster by Apple for movie downloads!!!
Outstanding remote control. So simple, it puts the others to shame.
But, try downloading a movie from the Apple store. First you select the movie you want, and then of course, you pay for it. Then you hit play. That's where your pain will begin. WARNING: You should never hit play. The download timer starts showing around 1/12 hrs required to download. This then changes progressively and regularly upward to as much as ten hours predictive download time. Then back down a couple of hours and then up a few more hours. Then down and up and down ...and up again and again. All in all, it took over 2 hours before we could watch the movie we paid for. When we did, I made a terrible mistake......I press the pause button. WARNING: You should never hit pause. So, of course, half way through the movie, the download process began again, this time taking about 40 minutes, with the incredibly entertaining ever changing innacurate timer.......all because I paused (you shouldn't do this) the movie. This same experience happened last time I downloaded a movie. That was 8 months ago. It took me that long to consider going through the pain again. With the latest upgraded software, I assumed it had been fixed, or improved. Nope! Just as bad. Not even an attempt to fix it. This is pathetic for a 4th generation product from someone like Apple. DO NOT buy this device if you plan on watching movies, or, heaven forbid, intend to pause the movie so you wife can answer the phone! I find it hard to believe that Tim Cook uses Apple TV4 to then take hours to download (& bad luck if he wants to go to the toilet,....I'll write to him and WARN him that he shouldn't do this.... and if he did go to the toilet, he would of course know not to pause the movie!) I BET HE DOESN'T USE IT. Otherwise he'd have demanded it be fixed by his employees so it could at least operate a tiny bit better than the next worse movie stream device on the market! Shame on Apple for doing nothing to fix this on a now mature product. Mature like old cheese perhaps, not mature like a refined product from Apple should be. A real betrayal of trust.
Easiest remote control ever.
We have had this for a while and I cannot rate it highly enough. The device was easy to install, we are not really tech heads, we are a retired couple that muddle through, but really the easiest thing ever. We are able to watch free movies, through netflix and others, really this device is so versatile, you really don't need anything else. Love it !!
Be prepared to wait for every itunes movie you download to take forever!!My internet is very fast (it loads movies no problem on ALL my other devices) but when I rent movies through apple tv IT TAKES OVER 2 HOURS!!! DO NOT RENT ITUNES MOVIES ON THIS DEVICE!! YOU WILL WAIT AN ETERNITY!!
A great addition to home entertainment paraphernalia
I love this. It is not too expensive, is small and neat and we use it constantly. You can give perfect slideshows from photos on any of your apple devices, and show catchup tv, youtube, (in fact anything you can show on your computer screen) to your television for no cost. You can also show downloaded or hired movies from whatever source. It is simple to use - so simple you don't even need children or grandchildren to figure it out. It gives you access to paid channels such as Stan, Netflix and Foxtel, but we use it more for no cost options.
Have had this for a while now. The apple remote integrates well with my tv being able to turn the tv on or off with the apple tv and also adjusting the tv's volume. Also works well with my bluetooth speaker setup. Apple tv has an option to reduce loud sounds which is good for keeping the volume down while still being able to hear the voice.
The main apps i use are Netflix, YouTube, 7 play, 9 now, 10 play and Crossy Roads game.
For YouTube and Netflix you can use voice recognition to search rather than typing with the remote.
Crossy Roads you can play two player using a iPhone as a second remote.
My only complaint is about the amount of ads in the tv catchup services, though this is no more than watching live tv.
Apple store told me about the free radio, so i bought it and the radio feature was great, now it has been deleated from apple selection it is only good for playing my own selection of music. What a piece of crap, they show you a feature then remove it.
Dont waste your money, after a while you are told to subscribe to the channels you like, no one at the apple store said anything about having to pay more money just to watch the channels that are already on the thing.
It's great. I love using it
I purchased a 4th Gen Apple TV to upgrade from the 2nd Gen Apple TV. I have to say the 4th Gen Apple TV is a huge step up from the 2nd Gen. The touchpad, using Siri, app selection I have so far found easy to use which is the way I like things to be. I can tell Siri my passwords, what I want to watch and more. I find the remote easy to use and with the functions available, it make navigation through the Apple TV easy for me.
I'm not tech savvy. I like to keep things simple, and as long as it does what I want it to do I am happy. This Apple TV does what I want. On top of this I find it easy to use.
I own a 4th generation apple TV and and a 2nd generation. In my opinion the 4th gen is a real step up from the previous generations.
I use my apple TV to stream ill-gotten video ( arrr!) from my PC to my apple TV over my wifi network - the apple Tv does this flawlessly with the addition of a free app from the App store called VLC. - load this app and its smooth sailing. the 4th gen Apple TV has plenty of memory for buffering and so I played my video flawlessly.
Previous generations would...pause because of bandwidth issues with wifi or internet. I downloaded an movie from itunes - made a cup fo tea etc to get a decent buffer built up and then watched to movie without a hiccough ( ps Ive got good internet ) The games you can play on it are fun - real racing 3 is great.
My Apple TV does the job I wanted it to. It plays Netflix and I can watch catch up episodes of MasterChef and Have You Been Paying Attention episodes! But that's whee it ends for me. Presented with a whole bunch of apps like Bloomberg's, Stan, and a whole bunch of sports channels, if you don't live in an Apple Universe, it's not really that useful.
If you install iTunes all over the house, you can probably enjoy a few more features. Unfortunately, I don't like iTunes so home network sharing is practically redundant. However, in saying that, I...
Great addition to a home entertainment centre
Recently purchased the 4th generation apple TV as an update from a 3rd generation model. The new model includes a new remove, Siri and ability to install Apps from the Apple TV App Store. This excellent little device sits discreetly beside our TV and cannot be seen unless you look for it. The ability for the Apple TV remote to start the TV to the correct channel, and change TV volume is welcomed as it means only 1 remote is needed for use. Siri generally works very well unless asking for obscure requests. Have downloaded a couple of games and these are ok but main use for us is movies, tv and music. In this use the Apple TV is a reliable and easy to use machine we are very happy with.
Absolute rubbish, makes me want to punch a puppy in the face.
Most of the time both my iPad and TV screen remain black when beaming. But, the most exciting part of this black box of crapness, is that it turns on my TV or changes the channel when I open my Mac! Apple is a long way from "awesome" today. Sad.
Money well spent
I have a 64 GB Apple TV it gets a lot of use and has never faltered I mostly use it with my iPad with AirPlay. l've found the Siri control very sensitive at times but practice makes perfect my grandson a six year old plays games with it from the App Store and also from his iPad. I have said before and say again you can't blame your Apple TV 3 or 4 if you use a cheep Internet provider you will only get what you pay for.
January 6th 2017 Update: Money well spent
I've been using my Apple TV for over 13 months now I have no complaints last we...ek I downloaded 2 movies to my iPad I played the on my TV didn't have to wait it was almost instant. I think a lot of complaints come from bad or cheep Internet providers I'm with Telstra and have NBN . My grandchildren of 7 and 8 also. Have no problems playing games on it October 6th 2017 Update: Gets better I still use my Apple TV and it gets better with each new update I have no regrets for perching mine I have no problems I speak to my brother in the uk and he sends me photographs of his family on Facebook these I view on m TV set str off my iPad I’ve done the same from my wife’s iPhone I’m 79 and have no problem s what so ever it’s one of the best perches great value for money
Plug and Play Hardly
We were told the Apple TV was plug and play, how wrong that comment was.
3 hours of time I will never get back because the unit was in Chinese.
The features like ABC IVIEW and SBS were also not available.
We were aso told if not satisfied with this product then we could feturn it to Harvey Norman.
Not so we have to have a complaint number even though I have logged 3 hours on the phone and multiple emils to my support person.
Wrap it in cotton wool
Remember the new apple tv is 3 times the price of the old one so it should be 3 times better right? Well its not and its disappointing. Siri search does not bring up what your looking for so Siri is a waste of time. Yes the remote is better to use than the old one but i will come to that. The only real difference between apple tv 3 and tv 4 is a limited amount of games and a new remote. Now lets talk about the remote, they need to be hard wearing right as they get a lot of use and used by the whole family. Well its made of glass and 2 weeks in ...mine is shattered and its $130 for a new one! I am a apple man and literally own so many items as a family. This is a big let down and they are just ripping me off by making a mediocre remote that does not last! Get apple tv 3 its almost the same and only $88 instead of $349 oh and the remote is not glass.
ITS nice, Mate. Its a pretty cool thingy that can do stuff like the movies and shows. The cat destroyed mine with its laser eyes. I can watch all the latest high tech movies on the tv without leaving the couch. Also as well as stream my iPad to the TV without connecting a cable for lightning to HDMI which does cost around 70 dollars
Updates to IOS and more content available have made this better
Apple have made some good updates to the IOS making this product better than before.
Some of the functionality, i.e. Siri and TV mode still don't recognise local content so you constantly have to juggle between the slick Apple Cloud integration and bad local searching (Music, Movies, TV) TV shows don't automatically play the next episode and Netflix/Stan doesn't allow for shortcuts through the TV mode (Amazon does).
Menus are slow and clunky to navigate but prettier than the old one.
