Didn't last for too long
Eventually this Modem started having issues but got a refund after sending back under warranty. The tools you have access to are very handy for monitoring traffic. Setting up for NBN was a pain like many people experienced with poor documentation, even after it was set up I could never get it faster than the standard modem Telstra provided with me.
Powerful and amazing with NB
This router is definitely a go to if you are switching to NB. I can't fault this router for its speeds. Even when multiple people are streaming or downloading at the same time my gaming does not drop in speed. Also, I have added an external drive with movies and tv shows to watch wirelessly around the house.
Great modem router... great functionality especially the VPN client function allowing me to securely browse the internet on all my devices without having to connect each device to the VPN manually. All devices connected to the 5GHZ network are very fast allowing me to transfer large files wireless to my NAS quite quickly also. Great product.
Fast and feature rich, but not as reliable as I would have expected after all these firmware updates
The router is fast. In the same room, I get 70MBps (that's a capital B) transfer speeds from my NAS PC to the desktop PC on 5GHz 802.11ac. The NAS is connected to the router via Ethernet. With the same setup, but with the router and the NAS PC in the garage, I get 40MBps+ which is darn good considering I hardly get any 4G connectivity through the walls of the house.
DSL performance is good, but not as good as the Sagemcom F@st 4315 which I received from the service provider when I had ADSL. But it is not something you notice while using the ...router. But its Wi-Fi and LAN capabilities are abysmal compared to the AC68U's. I firmware update support is amazing. It is important to reset the settings after a firmware update because otherwise it won't function reliably. I've had frequent freezes (like every other day) after upgrading firmware and once I factory reset it, it functions reliably. I currently use it with NBN FTTB, which means I have to use bridge mode and I lose one of the LAN ports because of this. Not a big deal, but just wanted to tell. One thing I noticed is that there are couple of features available on the Android app (maybe iOS app too) which aren't present on the router UI. Performance monitor (it shows how much CPU and memory is being used) and configure low power mode.
My husband bought this item after heaps of research on how to best manage all of the wifi devices on our home network. It works so well in managing all the kids and has built in time management so they only get internet after homework has been done. Also we have found that if one kid misbehaves we can turn off the internet to that one device. Brilliant.
Very good for NBN HFC, not as good for ADSL2
Bought one of these about two years ago and for the most part it's been good but there have been times when it's lost all connection to my previous connection (ADSL2+) which required a reset to correct. There have been a few bugs over that time but to be fair ASUS do put put out firmware updates quite regularly.
The best thing is this modem/router has had a renaissance in my network as my NBN HFC router and with the latest firmware it really flies (95mbps down and nearly 40 up). Obviously it's now connected to the HFC modem so it's more akin to the router RT-AC86U, but if you want a great NBN HFC router that has ADSLx as fallover then you could do much worse than this model.

Fantastic modem/router with excellent range
Prior to this modem I had a dlink which was ok but had dropouts every now and then and range wasn't fantastic.
After reading a few reviews i decided to bite the bullet and buy this one.
Well, what a great move it was . Range was fantastic, no dropouts to mention and dual band.
What i really like is they still release new firmware! Keeping older technology new as it's a great unit.
The only negative for me is no dedicated WAN port (i have to change on of the lan ports) and lack of support for HFC NBN from my understanding. I personally can't find the info to be able to use it as an HFC NBN router.
Apart from that, no other concern and has served me well while i had ADSL2+

Excellent mid range router
This is a great mid range router which was easy to set up and has good range with decent speed through put through it's three external antennas, a good choice if you have to rely on the NBN FTTN technology as it will give you the maximum possible speed via wireless conection, very happy

A good router.
I bought this router from shopping express and so far the impression is good. I only bought it because of the discount as the price is bit on higher side. The greatest feature of this router is that it has great range. 30m is easily covered. The speed is nice and it has great other features as well. It works with both NBN and ADSL.
Very easy to setup! Expensive for an old model, but worth the $$$
First time using a ASUS modem, and I'm very happy. It's interface is probably one of the easiest to use in order to setup for a ADSL network. I was surprised when it's finished and already connected.
The range is also very good. Got it for my in-laws so a big tick there for myself. Not cheap, and consider it's first released in 2014, it is definitely due for an update. But there is very good reason why it can still ask for a $$$ tag close to $300 because it is just so good.
One of the typical - set it up and forget about it - gadget.
It is one of the best routers out there; packed with features such as QoS and regular security updates. Have had absolutely no issues handling large number of simultaneous connections or experienced any drop outs relating to the router itself. It can support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz at the same time so you can get the best of both worlds in terms of speed and compatibility with newer and older devices.

Good when working
Good wifi, was extremely good on ADSL, great features, what lets this unit down is MEDIATEK chip set that constantly keeps trowing the port at the NBN exchange out, and then unable to reconnect, each time had to get NBN technician out just to be told not to use that modem as its not really NBN compatible and keeps throwing the port out. Last time it happened NBN technician said the modem is kaput to get the new one as this one each time he tried to connect it kept throwin the port out at the exchange. Contacted ASUS, RMA it to Asus Sydney on t...he 18/04/17, after numerous attempts to communicate with Sydney service centre up till now they are not answering their Phone, nor E-mail, so now I have lodged the complaint with NSW Fair Trading, hoping that after more then 2 months of ASUS silence, Fair Trading may be able to resolve this problem. Have read on Whirlpool lots of complaints abaut Asus service and warranty troubles about this very modem. This modems come with 3 year warranty, mine lasted about 17 months.
Good but still not as stable as it should be
This unit has lots of great features. But what seems like a good thing is actually a warning- there are frequent updates. Basically the updates are forever fixing issues. I've stopped updating now as the unit is relatively stable. But every three months it starts to drop connections and I have to factory reset the unit and setup from scratch. Its not just this unit as its been replaced once This is why it gets 3 stars.
Also if you are too far away from your node for NBN or your telephone exchange for ADSL this is not the modem for you. The me...
ASUS MODEM - ONE OF THE BEST
The ASUS DSL-AC68U would have to still be one of the best modem/routers out there. I have tried the telstra, iprimus branded modem, netgear and others and this has got the best wifi range of any of them. Considering this came out in 2013 Asus still support it and do firmware upgrades and the modem has a built in fault forwarding program direct to Asus who reply within a day or 2. You can monitor all the equipment accessing your network and give priority to some equipment over other equipment. It has everything all the latest model units have an...d IPv6 which many do not have ... but if your SP provider does not have this you still are on the IPv4 connection. You have a USB connection and can attached a large hard drive which all network users can access. You have a guest network and also Aiprotection and Aicloud. The traffic analyser is also handy to see what each device on the network has been accessing and download amounts. AND when NBN is connected (if that ever occurs) it can connect. Just check it out on the Asus site and also some of the computer info sites which review such equipment. Excellent product highly recommended.
Third time lucky. Good unit.
I gave this unit another try as I liked the features and needed the time sharing to limit the kids.
I finally got one that worked as it should and now have no problems running the time sharing features.
It works well through iPhone and iPad app.there are later firmware updates for the unit, but as it works, I'm leaving it well alone!
I bought this to replace our old Draytek modem router and D- Link DI-524 wireless hub that I run with a on off timer. That setup was good as the timer turned the D-Link router off, limiting the kids Internet a...ccess time, but it was slow. I upgraded to the Asus DSL-AC68U. Swapped the first unit as it was slower. Then got some better settings from Asus, which improved this. Overall I loved the user interface and the app for the IOS which let you see who and what was happening online. But then the time scheduling kept going crazy. After reinstalling the updated firmware twice and doing 2 master resets, I contacted Asus again and was told to install the older ..9166 software to fix the problem, but lost quite a few cool features. Seemed to work for a day then it went crazy again, dropping 1 user, and muddling the access times up completely and let them have access even though it looked like they were online. Spoke to Asus and they said to send it back to Sydney, which I said no way. So I packed it up, reinstalled my old setup and got a refund. If you don't need the time scheduler, it was a great modem router, with good guest access which you can do through the IOS app.
Questions & Answers
It says this modem router is compatible with cable, but I don't see a coaxial cable connector on it in the pictures. I have signed up to iiNet's cable broadband plan in Geelong, VIC but looking for the best modem router instead of their provided one. Can anyone answer if this model will work with iiNet cable?
