Insufficient after sales service
So Far So Good
Bought the Aspire 555 hardtop new from Avan Penrith. The buying process was without hassles or pressure from the salesperson. The caravan was delivered on the date promised and a full in-depth walk through and hand over process was performed. Had two issues with supplier products and completely happy how the issues were resolved by Avan Penrith. One of the issues could not be fixed at the dealership, and knowing we were heading to QLD in just two days time, the manager towed my van to the supplier in his own time at some crazy hour when he shou...ld of been tucked up in bed. That is customer service above and beyond. Thank you Avan Penrith. I recommend Avan Penrith for sales and service. Turning now to the caravan. 3000+ kilometres travelled with 17 nights so far. The bed is hard and too short (my wife and I are not tall people). The shower is too small (my wife and I are not large people). The television needs a restraining system while travelling. The microwave oven is only 700 watt so needs to extend cooking times accordingly. The Alko corner stabiliser legs are hard to operate for a late 60 year old such as me. The handles are too far under the caravan. I understand that is where the chassis is but for me I have to get down in the dirt to operate them. A younger person may not have a problem. The shower did not drain well and on investigating under the caravan I found the drain hose ran up hill for a short distance. Once I fixed that all is good. Id like to know what other owners do about drying towels as I can not find a suitable place inside for a towel rail. Screws that hold cupboard latches are two small and I have had to replace a few so far to keep doors closed. The range hood seems to be too heavy for the cupboard it is slung under and the shelf of the cupboard started to droop. A little re-engineering by me has fixed that problem. The fresh water indicator worked for a few days only and now shows 100% full even when the tank is empty. The USB outlets must be low apperage and takes absolutely hours upon hours to charge an iPad. I will take the Apple charger next time and use a power point. There was a fresh water leak under the sink but another easy fix by me. The air conditioner struggled in the QLD heat of 45 degrees. The fan from a blow heater did help move some air around. I see all these as teething problems or maintenance matters and has not detracted from our enjoyment of the caravan so far. Turning now to towing. I tow with a Holden Trailblazer and the Aspire 555 tows very very easily. It sits steady behind the car without any sway, and it has been in some cross winds over flat country plains. Pulls easily up the steepest hills and the electric brakes work perfectly in all terrains including some very steep declines. All in all we are happy with our Avan Aspire 555 Hardtop. I can recommend it as a good valued entry level caravan. So far so good.
Purchased in October 2019 at Avan NSW.
great Van after a few teething problems,
Love our hard top 555, had a few teething problems
1. leak in the water system under sink which was a washer seated incorrectly
2. shower rail broke loose
3.one under seat door cam off its hinges because the screws were too small for the hole
4. outside shower knobs were revered (hot was cold and visa versa)
5. they didn't fit the fold out table on side of van as was agreed to, which they eventually admitted to and so I got one form them and fitted it myself.
6. wow the instructions for the various systems around the van are pretty grim on detail and clarity
but other than that the van has been great
though double bed is a bit short my feet reach the end and I am 5'9"
Purchased in September 2019 at Avan NSW, Nowra.
Nead more practical engineering for electrical!
Haven't been in bad weather. Had an electrical fuse blow, and to replace it was extremely difficult because fuse holder WAS located under the front part of the bed! Have since relocated fuse holder out from under bed to out side face of forward bed frame. Fill tube on Thetford head not friendly to operate. Thetford head water pump 10 amp fuse in cassette compartment hard to get at to replace. Bed difficult to make up, but very comfortable.
Flooring plywood had wood void in traffic area between bed and hand basin causing 12" diameter 1/4" de...
- Aspire Hardtop 499 Double
ASPIRE499 with Bunks and double bed
The finish and quality was as good as any others.
The van is reliable and only problem was loose wire on water guage which Avan fixed without any hassles. This van is the most comfortable I have owned and I did own an earlier Avan plus a couple of Jaycos which were good but not as good as this one.
Towing is hassle free and follows me a dream.
After 3 years finding it a great van.
Nice van, easy to tow. Has rear double bed could do with a little bigger but very comfy if have the inner spring and not the foam. Kitchen consisting of gas cook top, microwave oven, deep bowl sink, 12v range hood with light and 3 way fridge. Rear combination shower/toilet with separate vanity not a problem very compact. It has reverse cycle air-con. Would recommend.
Love our van
We have found our van to be great to tow. Only issue we have is the table is hard to get in behind and the seat are very uncomfortable, but hey you are not supposed to be sitting behind them for hours so no big deal. We did find that our dealer supplied us with the grey water hose and didn't mention that we needed a connector. However we were asked to read all the supplied material and it does say to buy a connector of the correct size. We have not had our first month service so I guess we will find out what the service is like then. But so far it has been good.
Great little van
To find a little van with double bunks a double bed and shower and toilet was a big challenge with out going to a 20 ft or bigger van. This little van has it all, we just love it. Great to tow good clearance every thing we need for our weekends away. Like another person said they are not a $70 k van so don't expect a penthouse on wheels, but we love it and have had no problems.Hard to find a van with all this brand new for under $40 k with a 5 yr front to back warranty.
Perfect for us.
Bought out 499 in 2013. Not the perfect layout for us but what its got, its weight and especially the price was perfect for us. She tows well and havent had any problems. We love it.
After researching far and wide, I purchased a second hand Avan Aspire 499 HT. Great little van, compact, easy to tow, tows like a dream. Van was 4 years old and had been used as an on site van, lived in 24/7. Everything still works with minimal sign of wear all AOK. Minor issues related to under floor wiring and plumbing (in my fastidious opinion) were easily fixed by me as I am a tradesman. Great little van and would recommend it to all but the wingers who want a $75k van in a van that costs $37k. Dec 2017 Update. I have since looked at other vans plumbing and wiring and they are generally installed in the same manner as in the Avan. The van is still keeping us very happy.
Nice Caravan, 499 HT Aspire
Great van I love it, the wife has some reservations, easy to tow with an older 80 series Landcruiser and a petrol Hilux.
Because it's an easy van to tow and park and we live in southern Western Australia, our children live in Victoria and Perth so we use it as our personal space when we visit them. It also is used anytime we head off on weekends away.
We bought it 2nd hand Jan 2015 , the boot had leaked and destroyed the Camp room, we are getting new walls made up to fit, however the Prostor wind out awning works very well and we are happy w...
For an Aussie Built Van, at Affordable Price, it is the best I've Owned
Purchasing this van in late 2011 I lived in it in Darwin for 2.5 years. I have owned two Windsor Vans in the past and by contrast this is the best. That said, Aussie caravan quality is poor, like cars built in the 80s here. Pushed out the door without proper QC however unlike motor vehicles getting aftersales is difficult so be prepared to do your own repairs. The day the Chinese start building vans will be the death of the industry here, unfortunately. I have known people to spend $100,000 on a van and have the same problems as those with...a $38,000 van. The secret is not to have a high expectation of the Aussie product just try and get the best you can for your money while considering your needs. All that said, my 499 Aspire has been more than satisfactory. Lightweight at 1250kg Tare and ATM of 1550kg. With plenty of storage and comfortable bed (I have the inner spring mattress), tows well although could be a little higher of the ground although that wouldn't be noticed if you pulling with a Falcon or Commodore. If height is an issue I am told putting the springs on the axel is a cost affective and easy solution. I haven't bothered with this but worth looking at which would avoid scrapping on some of the deep driveway entrances. All up, I have loved this van and for a van in the mid $30k good value. It is my view from other owners I speak with that those who have had a negative experience would be in the minority. But like Aussie cars made in the 80s, there would always be the 'lemon' and that is a shame for those purchases. Regrettably I'm in a new phase of my life and am placing the van on the market but do so knowing I am selling a great van at an affordable prices. I hope this personal account has been of assistance.
Great value for money, looks contemporary and we love ours!
AirCommand Sparrow well placed and operates with very little external noise, so does not disturb the peace for other campers nearby.
Exhaust fan in toilet cubicle very effective
Double glazed windows improves noise insulation
Elektroblock batter management system also has built in DC to DC functionality to allow car to charge van's batteries
External water tap mounted on A frame
Large sunroof makes interior bright and airy.
Door does not have vent at the bottom, allowing dust to enter, and stable door feature very handy feature - can watch TV outside with top half of door open.
Built in blinds and insect mesh in windows and sunroof.
Table that converts into additional bed can accommodate most adults. ...
We love it
We bought an A-Van Aspire 499 HT through A-Van Brisbane, at the Brisbane Caravan Show in late 2012, we live in Townsville North Queensland which is 1368 km away by road for those who think it is just outside Brisbane. (Don't laugh some people are that geographically challenged). We didn't pick it up until June 2013, so we have had it now nearly 12 months.
The design & weight & price were perfect for us, it had most of the features we wanted, built in battery & charger, shower & toilet, awning & outside table fitted to the side of the van
Value for money Avan Aspire HT 499
We not long ago bought the Avan Aspire HT 499 with adventure pack. We love the van and the budget was right for us. General speaking from my experience you always get what you pay for! The AVAN for us is exactly what we wanted, covered all the bases without the too hefty price tag. I believe that when purchasing a caravan of any brand you have to consider how far away you local dealer is and look at the review of your local dealer, as to how they deal with warranty issues!
With the Aspire, we have found that the toilet stopped working, afte...r researching the Thetford toilet has a 3amp fuse hidden inside after removing the cassette, however this fuse was OK, there was also a 3amp fuse under the bed which had blown, which also runs a few of the lights! After replacing that one with a 5amp fuse have had no probelms! Also minor design fault, that the door to the van if leaving open and clipped back on the van, does not allow the window above the sink to be opened ( does not worry us too much), and also covers the two vents for the airflow for the fridge! ( once when we were using LPG for the fridge and had the door open all day, it appeared to heat up a bit, but we just closed the door and the temperature around the fridge enclosure reduced fine! Lastly the Adventure pack towball height was mounted to the bottom of the drawbar, which for me with a lifted Prado, was way too low. I have purchase 40mm thick steel billet, drilled holes, fitted longer bolts to raise a bit for my vehicle, if you owned a normal sedan the height is probably OK but if you have a remotely high towball mount you will probably need to raise also! With Avan, we are really happy, Compact, light weight, VAN! I would recommend having that desire to fix minor things yourself if buying an AVAN, ( being a tinkerer like me). We love it exactly what we wanted! Inexpensive new Van, Minor things may need attention
Good value for money
We bought our Aspire 525 pop top at last years Brisbane show and picked it up at the beginning of 2013. Its a good value for money van and we have done a few trips in it now and are extremely happy with it. Yes there are a few cosmetic things but i wouldnt call them issues and lets face it, you are going to get those with anything these days - pencil marks on some of the doors where they have been marked for the holes for the handles but you dont notice them unless you really look hard. In fact it shows that they are hand made and not mass prod...uced. Some of the edge beading on the timber inside is a bit mis aligned and the trim around the inside of the front boot is coming loose which can be fixed with some silicone or liquid nails but in my opinion, its a great van and we find it does what we want. Its a good layout with plenty of storage space inside. There are options for where to mount the spare wheel. We had the spare wheel mounted on the rear - it could have gone in the front boot but that takes up valuable storage space in the boot and puts alot of weight over the draw bar. The van tows really well. We bought an after market mattress as we just couldnt get comfortable in the factory supplied foam mattress and it seems that most of the new vans come with similar mattresses. The Coromal Camper Trailer that we had previously had similar mattresses. A Van converted the table which collapses to make a small bed/or day bed which is good for lounging out and watching the TV. I installed some conduits underneath to store the waste pipe so it doesnt contaminate everything i put in the front boot and we bought a shade cloth for the side of the roll out awning. The only criticism's are that the curtains are not really curtains - they just look like curtains and are there to frame the inside of the windows. This means that although the van has fly screens, you can still see in from outside at night if the lights are on. Better to be able to close the flyscreens and the curtains but leave the window open to get some breeze. Another thing to look out for is that when you open the locker underneath the seat, which has a big long door so potential so store some big items, the opening is blocked by the water tank filler pipe that goes right across the middle of the opening which renders the locker practically useless. It may be just this model and i suppose it makes it easy to maintain if necessary. Theres plenty of other storage space and in fact we have not been able to fill all the cupboards anyway. We picked the van up from the Caloundra dealer on Nicklin Way. The hand over service was excellent and they explained how everything worked and even drove me around the block to make sure we had the brake controller set up correctly. If you are looking for a good value for money van, the A Van is well worth a look. Layout, value for money, service on pick up, tows great, good size. Nothing that would stop us buying another one but if i have to put something here, it would be that the curtains are not really curtains.
Questions & Answers
how comfortable and practical is the double bed since of its odd shape mattress? also are the bunks long enough to fit grown ups?
Aspire hard top 563, 2013 model
Brake lights dont work and definately getting power from car.
Avan tells me there is a fuse box for those lights but it simply is not in the van. I think it may rely on car fuses. What can I do to fix the fault?
Hi, I have an Avan 555 Aspire. How do I remove the microwave. I can't see any way of getting it out. There doesn't seem to be any accessible mounting screws but it is very solid so must be mounted in some way?
