I will never hire with Avis again, after dropping our car back a day early for them to fix a tiny stone chip. Avis never repaired it, hired the vehicle to the next renter and the chip turned into a massive crack across the whole windscreen.
We are now being blamed for this crack from the other driver and Avis and are being forced to pay for a whole new windscreen !?! Very dodgy tactics. I’ve called multiple times, sent numerous emails with photos but have still not had the charge reversed. Stay away
Going back to hertz
First time renting an avis after years of using hertz and end up buying a windscreen because of a small stone chip. Going back to HERTZ where Ive never experienced anything like this.

Ripped off by the Artarmon location
Booked and paid the car in full online before picking up. Decided to purchase an insurance for extra cover which was supposed to be 35*3=105. Returned the car earlier than scheduled time with full fuel tank filled 300 meters away from Artarmon location. So the only charge I should have it the extra 105 insurance I purchased. However, they charged me $157 instead and explained the reasons of:
1. premium location- I picked up and return to the same location with no delay
2. fuel service- filled right before return 300m away from their store.
Beware of unauthorized additional charges
I am an Avis preferred member but will never use them again after two very negative experiences with Avis (Barcelona airport Aug 2018 and Melbourne Airport Jan 2020). In both cases additional costs were added after I returned the vehicles. In Spain there was over 200 euros of unexplained additional charges. It took 2 months to get the money back. In Melbourne I was charged for fuel after I returned the car full - and this was confirmed when I signed the car back in! Avis did refund the money but I am still to receive an explanation as to how t...his happened. It seems to me that Avis has an systemic issue with adding additional charges (there are many other similar reviews here). Perhaps staff are incentivised to do it? I can't imagine why they would be so careless in ruining their brand as they are here....
Charged more than $70 what was quoted without any explanation
Horrible customer service. I called the customer service phone number 24hrs after i dropped off the car and noticed I was charged a significantly high amount than was quoted on the booking confirmation.
I was told they could not help me until 48hrs after dropping the car off and that I would receive a call back from them. I did not receive any call back. I waited more than a week for a call back.
I then called them and explained the situation and was told i then had to send an email re-telling the situation and attaching the booking confirmatio...
I would rate this business -0 - Disgraceful and arrogant conduct - DO NOT USE THEM!! They don't care about their clients
I booked an international car hire through them. Had to deal with disinterested staff and rude service. I booked a Portable Wifi when I booked the hire. The Portable Wifi stopped working after 4 days into a 7 day hire. I was relying on the Wifi for communications with family as I was travelling alone and for help with road directions if I became lost which did happen. When dealing with AVIS the problem is always YOUR problem because issues that arise through their lack of service is your problem to resolve. Nobody needs this additional str...ess in their life because a business is just not interested in their client! Also it seems that some offices may be operating as a franchise which doesn't help you as a client if you happen to have a problem and you can't deal with the office where you hired the car through. If you were to have a problem you have to deal with Manila as that is where their call centre is for Australia and they're just hell to deal with. I thought that Avis was a respectable business but no more! Do not use this business they're dishonest in their dealings with customers and and just DON"T CARE!

I've been using AVIS for a while for intrastate work trips. Recently had an incident where paint fell off the back of a truck and was splatted all over the side of the rental vehicle. I reported it to AVIS 10 mins after it occurred, provided all the details and arranged to swap the vehicle over that afternoon so AVIS might have a better chance of cleaning it.
Weeks later I'm sent an invoice for the excess amount suggesting I hadn't provided any details. Unbelievable! They are a massive company, are lazy and just DON'T CARE about looking after the people that provide them with business.
Will I be renting from AVIS again? There are much better options in Australia. Don't waste your time or money!
Pushy customer service & watch out for hidden costs
I rented a car for 5 days through Avis in Malaga, Western Australia. When I picked up the car, they pushed me 3 or 4 times to pay extra to reduce the excess (an extra $500 or so) and were quite irritated when I refused. When I returned the car, it took several attempts to get a final invoice, to find they had overcharged me by $32. I've queried it, but they claim the fee was correct. I know it's a small amount, but I just want to warn others of their tactics.
scammed me on a petrol tank refill
I returned my car with a full tank and had receipts but they added a tank of fuel to my credit card without telling me. They were hoping I didnt notice. It took weeks to fix the mess. I wont use them again

AVOID AVIS at all costs -> Dishonest misleading trade practices, inconsistent messages from staff, no customer service
1. Rented a car at Melbourne airport office early Feb 2020
2. Enquired possibility of a slight extension as well as revised rates as unable to do so via website.
3. Told by 2 x staff from customer service call centre that Melbourne airport office will get back to me within a day to provide the revise rates.
4. Called them back to inform no one has rung me back.
5. Was told to just wait for the call, keep the car for as along required and alls well.
6. At the end of the rental was slammed with a massive bill, far exceeding the initial rental rat...
Misleading and deceptive
I hired a Avis budget vehicle in Cape Town, South Africa. The staff member advised that the car did not include breakdown insurance and to cover this I would need to purchase the premium insurance. This was in fact incorrect. My car hire included breakdown, but she stated it did NOT. Who wants to take the risk in South Africa. As a result I paid an additional $360. Travellers beware of this deceptive and misleading information.
Beware. They charge extra.
I hired a car from Hobart airport late Jan/early Feb.
booked online and was charged what i thought was a reasonable amount. When we picked up the car I opted to reduce the excess ( costing $27 per day). A total of 4 days which came to $108 by my calculations. When I checked my credit card on our return home, they had debited it at the start of the hire ( the day I booked it) and the day we returned it. I rang their customer service and as they were busy took my details and was told they would either call back or email. No contact, so a week la...
Dishonest Car Rental
They overcharge me for credit card surcharge but they ignore my refund request. In the invoice stated 1.17% surcharge fee but end up they charged me 6.9% fee. Please stay away.

Awful experience with refund issue post hire
Made a booking with AVIS and required a refund due to a system error their end. Have made numerous calls to their reservations call centre post hire to try and sort it out and been hung up on four time. You are moved around between their reservations departments and no one can sort it out. very frustrating for what should be a simple process. will never hire a care from them again as have been treated very poorly by their processes.
Very disappointing customer service
Picked up a car couple of weeks ago at Maroochydore Airport. Once we drove out we noticed the fuel tank had not been refilled. We called and Avis told us we would be re reimbursed once the car had been returned. Prior to drop off we refilled the tank as required. When dropping the key off we again mentioned the fuel issue. Allegedly the person at the counter made a note of this on the computer. He assured us we would be reimbursed shortly. To date, after numerous phone calls, and constantly given the run around, we still have not been reimburse...d. We keep getting put through to an overseas call centre where they keep giving us the same old standard corporate lines and simply have no idea what we are on about. They refuse to put us through to an Avis rep here in Australia and on several occasions have not got back to us after saying they would. I am so sick and tired of paying for a service and not receiving the service we paid for. We hire cars frequently and will NOT use Avis again. Such poor customer service.
Charged more than double!
Quoted $266 charged $735.
Customer service at Sydney Airport was friendly but I was given me the paperwork for a different car.
Call centre was not very helpful after being on hold for almost an hour to discuss charges.
Was charged again upon returning the vehicle.
Not impressed, would not recommend.
Avis charged me for a rental fee that I already pre-paid through rentalcars.com
We booked an Avis car through rentalcars.com for my trip in December 2019 and pre-paid the car rental fee prior to the trip through rentalcars.com.
Upon pick-up, we decided to purchase the full cover with no excess for the peace of mind. The employee at the airport asked for a credit card, which was going to be used as a "holding" charge, which was normal and we were happy to do that.
The problem was, I didn't have my credit card on me and so, I had to use my debit card. The employee informed that it was fine, and same as credit card, it wou...ld just show up on my bank statement as "pending" transaction, which would not be charged as long as the car was returned on time. I could see in my bank statement that the pending charge included the coverage amount as well as the car rental fee. So, all was good and as informed by the employee. We returned the car on time, with a full tank and no damage (even if there was, we purchased the full cover anyways, so no more charge should be incurred). A few days later, the "pending" charge was actually charged and money was taken out of my account. I waited a few days thinking that it would be refunded, but no, it wasn't. So, I decided to contact them, explaining that we have pre-paid the car rental fee through rentalcars.com and were only expecting to be charged for the full cover we purchased upon the pick-up.
Dishonest or just devious?
I hired a car at Perth airport in October 2019 for three weeks. The car was fine, almost new, the pickup was easy. The trouble began when I was 250 kms away and discovered one of the tyres had a fist sized bulge on the side wall. I drove it very slowly into Margaret River, where a local tyre dealer confirmed it had to be replaced. I rang Avis and they said to go ahead. After waiting a day to get the right sized tyre delivered from Perth, I continued the rest of the hire without trouble.
When I returned the car to Perth airport, the Avis employe...
Hired a car in South Africa. Avis received a speeding fine and charged me an admin fee, which is fine. I received no copy of the fine and was not advised how I should pay it or what to do. 4 months later two additional charges for the same amount were debited on my credit card. I have been trying for a month to get an explanation. I am told they are not erroneous charges but no evidence of any additional fines or charges has been provided. It seems looking through the reviews here that Avis just charges whatever they want with no proof. I chose Avis because I thought they were a reputable company but I guess not. Well done Avis you have lost all my future business. Don't use them is my recommendation.
Overcharged on quote
I hired a car in Hobart & was told & shown on a small screen that for four days my total charge was $648 however when I checked my account later that night they had charged me $871. I went back to see the hire staff the next day & was told that I should have been told they would charge me extra however they didn’t which makes the transaction illegal.

This booking was cancelled due to Covid 19 and no flights available to the UK to take up the car hire . A months notice was given.I have enquired 5 times regards refund and no response other than speak to your travel agent. No agent was involved - booked on Avis website and paid immediately via credit card.
Appreciate a tough time for all business around the world . I appreciate the due refund asap . Every other hotel/airline that was involved in this trip has responded positively and had done the right thing within a reasonable amount of time .
Please Avis do the same .
Anyone been in an accident with an Avis hire car when the hire car crashed into my car and did substantial damage to te rear end but unfortunately I am not insured so I am trying to get Avis to pay for my car as the accident was not my fault ( rear ended)
Avis claim I must chase up the driver and until he pays his excess I will not have my car repaired. Yes the man driving the car is no longer answering calls or emails...
any advice is much appreciated
this becomes police matter, i hope you reported acident to police, they can find the driver, most probably issue his ticket, get police report number for insurance claim. if nothing works, report to consumer affairs, if nothing work, you may have to take AVIS to QCAT, only take $60-70 but bit of pain.
Is the service still same now, 2016?
Yes the service can be nest described as bad.
Car delivered scratched (every panel including the roof!) and filtheir than a worn out cab
Was asked at Melbourne Airport to put in 2 dollars ($1.30/l) more fuel as there was an discussion of the defnition of a full tank?
It isnt AVIS fault it is the 'crew' that handles the cars for all renters.
