AVIS North Parramatta and AVIS Budget Lost Property
I would like to review several aspects of Avis both which are complimentary. And this definitely is not a paid review.
Firstly I (via my insurer) hired a car from Avis Parramatta North after dinging mine. The whole check in/checkout process was pretty painless. Avis was obliged to give me the cheapest car. Starting to rain, the Avis man gallantly took me umbrella in hand to the car. This was a Kia Cerato .. I know nothing about these but it stuck to the road, turned a tight corner, could practically drive itself, and was smart, roomy, clean, a...nd comfortable. Not bad for the *cheap* car. A few weeks later I had a text from Korrin at Avis Budget about an item of mine they found in the car. Korrin bent over backwards to get this to me and do so with as less stress as possible, due to some difficult circumstances. I was actually really touched. I never thought I would write this type of review about a car hire company!
Pushy customer service & watch out for hidden costs
I rented a car for 5 days through Avis in Malaga, Western Australia. When I picked up the car, they pushed me 3 or 4 times to pay extra to reduce the excess (an extra $500 or so) and were quite irritated when I refused. When I returned the car, it took several attempts to get a final invoice, to find they had overcharged me by $32. I've queried it, but they claim the fee was correct. I know it's a small amount, but I just want to warn others of their tactics.
scammed me on a petrol tank refill
I returned my car with a full tank and had receipts but they added a tank of fuel to my credit card without telling me. They were hoping I didnt notice. It took weeks to fix the mess. I wont use them again
Have used Avis a number of times and the service is usually of a high standard. The cars are new and in excellent condition. All is good, expect when it comes to payment. They do accept debit MasterCard and debit Visa, but the way they process the payment and place a hold on your funds is unacceptable. For example , if the rental agreement is for 3 days and the total cost being $200. At the time of collecting the vehicle, they place a hold on your debit card for : $200( cost of the rental) plus a bond of $400( because it’s a debit card rather t...han a credit card). In total they place a hold on $600 of your funds. I don’t have a problem with that aspect of the rental. The problem begins when you finish your rental agreement and return the car. Assuming it’s returned in good working order, they will send a request to your bank to release the funds in full, yes in full and then they will charge your card for the cost of the rental on the spot. It takes up to 10 days for the release of your funds to be available in your account. So on a $200 rental agreement, you will have $800 of your money tied up for up to 10 days. Avis blames the banks for the lengthy delay, the banks point the finger back to Avis. What makes no sense, is that despite already having hold of your money at the commencement of the rental agreement they effectively double dip by charging your card again at the end of the rental. It’s now 2020 and money transfer systems are very advanced with instant bank transfers such as osko etc. Avis should have a better payment processing system than it currently has in place. To further high light the problems with their payment processing system. Take a close look at the following example: 1.Rent a car in Sydney for 1 day, cost of rental $100 plus $400 bond. On return of the car the following day, your debit card gets charged an additional $100 and you need to wait up to 10’days for your $500 to be released and available.
Dishonest or just devious?
I hired a car at Perth airport in October 2019 for three weeks. The car was fine, almost new, the pickup was easy. The trouble began when I was 250 kms away and discovered one of the tyres had a fist sized bulge on the side wall. I drove it very slowly into Margaret River, where a local tyre dealer confirmed it had to be replaced. I rang Avis and they said to go ahead. After waiting a day to get the right sized tyre delivered from Perth, I continued the rest of the hire without trouble.
When I returned the car to Perth airport, the Avis employe...
Very poor service Perth airport.
There was no representative at the Avis/Budget desk in the airport so we went to the hut in the parking lot. Not a problem. The service from the moment we arrived there was poor. Little interest from the staff. We were entitled to an upgrade but we were not going to get it had I not mentioned it. So they bring us the car that we were upgraded to and it had 1 bald tyre and another near bald tyre. Not safe and not roadworthy. So they bring us a lesser car and we don't get our upgrade. I can't be sure but I believe it was actually a downgr...ade. We had never been to Perth airport before and we weren't aware that we needed a slip to let us through the exit gate. Lo and behold, no slip in the car so we have to wait for help whilst the cars behind us were backing up and we had no where to go. I mentioned it to one of the Avis yard employees when we returned the car 11 days later and he said there should have been a slip in the car when we picked it up. He told us that the service in the hut was poor. Such a shame, we have don quite a bit of business with Avis at different locations and always found them pretty good. (Except once at Sydney airport when they tried to give us a car with so much bird dung on the windscreen I couldn't see out of it).
Beware the "Estimated cost"
I reserved a car via Avis Australia to be picked up and dropped off at Munich Airport.
My reservation had an "Estimated Cost"; however this did not include a 90 Euro airport surcharge which I only found out about when I picked up the car. It was very clear that my reservation was for airport collection and the charge is mandatory, therefore I do not see why this charge could not be included in the estimate. This is sharp practice Avis - possibly borderline illegal.
I have no issue with the Avis desk at Munich Airport and the car was fine. I wo...
Rented plenty of times, never had a problem
I've rented Avis rental cars a number of times now (perhaps 7 or 8 times?) in a range of locations, mostly Australia but also overseas. I've only ever had positive experiences, with new, clean cars at a reasonable fee, fairly helpful and straightforward staff who don't try any upsell tactics, no problems with false accusations of damage, and whenever the vehicle I booked wasn't there I was allocated a better one. I always take photos of the car, and I never take out Avis's own excess protection, preferring instead to cover any excess by taking ...out a policy with www.rentalcover.com, but these safeguards haven't been needed so far. My most recent experience involved renting a people mover van, and needed two baby seats fitted - both were installed appropriately, and even thoughtfully placed in convenient locations in the van. I'll continue to book with them based on having had these hassle-free experiences.
Good car, terrible service
Pick up/drop off and the car itself were fine. But they charge you for the car with a deposit up front, then take the full amount of the rental a second time, holding the remainder of your money for more than a week. No interest in helping out on the phone. No explanation up front that this would happen.
If you go with these guys, know that they will take $400 + (2×car rental cost) for more than a week, before they correct.
We rented a vehicle online for our use while in Canberra. We were offered a slight discount for prepayment, which we did. Upon arrival at the Avis office at the airport, our vehicle was not ready and we were offered an upgrade for $5 per day which we accepted. When we arrived home we received an invoice of $140 as they said the original discount for prepayment didn't apply because of the changed vehicle. Wow, there was no mention of this at the office when I specifically asked if there would be any additional charges i.e. only the $5 per day. I...was reassured that would be the only change. It seems just another price gauge. The car was clean and reliable but their generally rude customer service, and money grabbing very disappointing. Is it really worth losing a customer? Shame on you Avis.
The experience with the office staff was positive.
I didn't get the car I asked for.
Negative experience was when I got in the car, stunk of cigarette smoke, wasn't very clean.
Plus couldn't find how to release the handbrake.
Won't even open complaint case
We had an issue with Avis. After ringing and sending an email they refused to open a case because the attachment couldn't be accepted. There was no attachment! In other words, they would not even open a case for a genuine complaint. Avoid.
Unreliable GPS and exorbitant costs if you scratch it
Avis provided a car with built-in GPS for our Christchurch NZ holiday. It stupidly kept directing us along roads that were closed when we wished to just go onto the next town; plus it could never get us back to our accommodation as the only route it offered included turning illegally against a permanent no right turn sign. We had to give up going to the next town south as three different roads all were dead ends. We solved the daily return by trial and error familiarising ourselves with one way streets and turn restrictions - and ignored the GPS. NOT good enough Avis!!!
Ideal car and excellent service
Ideal car and excellent service at pick-up and drop-off at Adelaide airport. Only issue is the time it's taking to process the payment. The $200 security deposit is still being withheld by the bank because of slow processing which I was informed would take two weeks. Why???
Get a new operator at avis launceston
I am an avis preferred customer and at avis Launceston had to watch the staff serve the general line first. Then I was offered the worst vehicle available and when I refused they offered me a brand new prado. What is the point in being an avis preferred client?

Booking confirmation 3144-2492-GB-4PP
This booking was cancelled due to Covid 19 and no flights available to the UK to take up the car hire . A months notice was given.I have enquired 5 times regards refund and no response other than speak to your travel agent. No agent was involved - booked on Avis website and paid immediately via credit card.
Appreciate a tough time for all business around the world . I appreciate the due refund asap . Every other hotel/airline that was involved in this trip has responded positively and had done the right thing within a reasonable amount of time .
Please Avis do the same .
Anyone been in an accident with an Avis hire car when the hire car crashed into my car and did substantial damage to te rear end but unfortunately I am not insured so I am trying to get Avis to pay for my car as the accident was not my fault ( rear ended)
Avis claim I must chase up the driver and until he pays his excess I will not have my car repaired. Yes the man driving the car is no longer answering calls or emails...
any advice is much appreciated
this becomes police matter, i hope you reported acident to police, they can find the driver, most probably issue his ticket, get police report number for insurance claim. if nothing works, report to consumer affairs, if nothing work, you may have to take AVIS to QCAT, only take $60-70 but bit of pain.
Is the service still same now, 2016?
Yes the service can be nest described as bad.
Car delivered scratched (every panel including the roof!) and filtheir than a worn out cab
Was asked at Melbourne Airport to put in 2 dollars ($1.30/l) more fuel as there was an discussion of the defnition of a full tank?
It isnt AVIS fault it is the 'crew' that handles the cars for all renters.
