Great features and easy operation
At the time of purchase this was the only unit with proper networking and DVD player. We have 2 DP-S1's networked and love it. Have used a few other pvr's and found the menus a pain. Replaced the hard drive in one unit after many years of every night use.
Great unit but some functionality just doesnt work.
I have had this unit since 2007 and it has been fantastic.
The recording and playback are great as well as the interface.
Biggest hassle is the dvd player which is sporadic in ability. Will play some dvds but not others. Got better with firmware upgrades but still a bit flaky. Also the WLAN connection really was not functional at all and useless with a Belkin network at home.
The EPG quite often crashed the system and also dropped out many times but was still functional.
The ability to record and the jump buttons and the setting out of the recordings is well thought out and the speed of the remote is fast.
I've had this unit since Dec 2006. It has got better and better over time with new firmware releases by the manufacturer. After intensive use for 4 years, the HDD has failed but its been great. It has changed the way we watch TV. I have recently checked around for a replacement unit but after all this time still nothing matches it for features and simplicity. I have not had the issues that others have mentioned. I'd rather have the HDD repaired than replace it with anything else (including Tivo).
Excellent hardware profile and list of features....

Know better, choose better.
I love this player for it's ability to record multiple shows, how it organises these for viewing, and can have TV subtitles recorded for these as well (I'm a mother of a young baby so I watch a lot of silent TV!).
However, we have had a lot of trouble with the DVD player and connecting through the LAN to the PC - had to send it away for repair twice and the faults were not fixed. The company then replaced the player, and the same faults have recurred (eg DVD noisy, refusing to read DVDs and freezing the whole machine, not recognising files on...
It's a jack of all trades, master of none. But then, this remains a maturing market/product and Rome wasn't built in a day. If the next firmware update provides a far better media interface it will be at least a 4 rating.
Check the Beyonwiz forum. There are a lot of complaints but a lot of praise too.
Also, consider the lack of Blue Ray, maybe worth holding off until they include it instead of upscaling from SD as they do now.
Great timeshift functions and the ability to record two channels simoultaneously. Wireless networking works ...
