Fantastic drive, looks great, iconnect could be better
I have now had the car for over 18 months. Everything about the vehicle as a vehicle is quite fantastic. I am somewhat disappointed with the remote electronics. I owned the vehicle for 3 months before the remote systems worked! But as a drive, fantastic. But the remotes don't perform all that well. The car gets lost to the BMW internet system all too soon after leaving the metropolitan area. Odd occurrence of quirky unexplained operations of electronic systems inside the vehicle takes the shine of the otherwise perfect vehicle. Buy it for the way it drives, not the electronics. In country drives I get 5.5litre/ 100km, how fantastic is that!

Service plan 330i
Anyone had an issue where the purchase contract states a service plan of 10years/100,000km but in the BMW system, it is only recorded as 3yrs/60,000km's. Thats the case I have. The dealer acknowledges it should be for 10years, but keeps saying, they are working with Munich to resolve some issue about the code they should use. From Waverley BMW

Great driving experience except for the tyres
I bought this car in 2016 when it was two and half years old with only 13,000 kms on the clock. I bought it via a dealer, but it was a deceased estate - hence the low kms. I have been very happy with it. I love the way it drives - the dynamics are sharp and the 2 litre turbo is very responsive. After all, you buy a Beemer for the driving experience and I'm very pleased with it in that regard after years of driving company cars - Falcons, Commodores, Aurions. It looks great and the the finish is very good. The modern line with oyster upholster...y is very attractive and cool for Qld's warmer climate. I drive it in the normal setting most of the time and get 10L/100kms around town and about the same on the open road. I find the stop-start quite rumbly on restart, so generally turn it off. My main grumble is runflat tyres. They make for a bumpier ride on anything other than smooth highways and they are completely unsuited to long distance driving in Australia. No doubt they are fine on the German autobahns. So I don't take it much out of the SE of Qld where I can be sure of getting a replacement tyre. That means the old Toyota Aurion gets to do all our long distance travelling - it's a great car to drive in a straight line and more economical on the highway than the Beemer. My local mechanic services the BMW now it's out of warranty and he is far more reasonable than the BMW dealers.
Great Drive but iDrive is Crap
Love the drive. There's some turbo lag as expected for a turbo charged 2L but it's not as noticeable as compared to other cars I've tested (VW GTI, Audi A3). That's an easy fix by using sport mode where it's almost non-existent but you'll pay through the roof for fuel.
Had a lot of issues with the iDrive system though. Kept crashing when I was using the GPS and reset all my saved maps and Connected Drive from my phone. Had to bring it back to the dealer 4 times (if not more) to sort that out. They replaced the system and reinstalled the so...ftware before it finally started working properly. Had a squeaking sound after the first month of purchase and they kept blaming the seals. Eventually sorted out and it was the front seats which required some tightening if you do experience that issue. Another issue I'd was the "sound exhaust" below the driver's seat. The gap is quite big to allow the engine vocals into the cabin but coins and small items can drop in pretty easily if you aren't careful. Once there it's hell irritating as you can hear rattling sounds and it's a pain to take out. Overall I'd rate it 8/10. It's the "ultimate driving machine" after all and the drive sure didn't disappoint.
Reliable car with quality
What I like about this BMW is build quality and just look elegance. Fuel consumption can be thirsty for the naturally aspirated 2.5 engine. On average it takes about 12 to 14L per 100kms.
you don't want things to go wrong with BMW because it can cost you, especially mechanically when its out of warranty.
Would probably recommend the newer generation for better fuel ecomomy

Great performance, perfect as a family car
BMW series 3 is perfect for my family of four. It is spacious in the inside As well as the boot. The handling is very smooth at turns as well as the performance of the car is really good for the price. Overall it is also fuel efficient so the running cost is not as high as the other similar range.

So Damned Fine, But Here Are the Minor Gripes Most Won't Talk About
Just purchased a second-hand (2013) 320d. I absolutely love it, and not just because I'm desperate to tell myself that I made the right decision in spending that much money on a car. I can rave about how great it is, but many other people will have done that already. So I'm going to talk about the fuel efficiency in real terms and the things that aren't quite as great as they could be in again, very realistic terms.
This is, in simple terms, a fantastic car. But if you've read rave reviews and you're wondering, "what aren't you telling me?",...then read on... The fuel cost is *incredible*, and it is for this reason alone that I can't help but feel that all my family and friends need to have one of these cars. So, diesel is more efficient than standard fuel and thus (I'm lead to believe) you will use 30% less. Then, on top of that, the price per Litre is even cheaper again. So, cheaper fuel, AND I use less of it. Brilliant! I've found that I can do 5-6 hours of driving around Melbourne and it will cost me $15 in fuel. The car switches itself off at traffic lights when I come to a stop (it felt like it stalled on me the first time it happened). I've been told this is to reduce exhaust emissions rather than to conserve fuel usage, but given the amount of time I spend at traffic lights or coming to a stand-still in inner-city traffic, I can't help but wonder if it helps with fuel efficiency too. This means that there is a delay of waiting for the car to start again once the lights change if you haven't taken your foot off the break to re-engage the engine beforehand.

I bought it when the 318 was 9yrs old. It still runs good. I can feel I drive it by my thinking. But after 200000kms, sometime light has little problem, the roof was down. I sold it at 230000kms. miss my bmw 318 so much. Will buy an new one when I afford it
Bmw Navigation - Expensive Annual Cash Drain Or Not Up To Date
Yes I have navigation in my BMW 3 series. It does not update unless you visit a BMW dealer and pay them $500. Fortunately the Navigation panel is the exact size of the iPhone and that can be held with a rubber band around the screen. Updated by Apple constantly for free and is much more user friendly than the clunky BMW one and saves $500 a year.
Excellent car but expensive
I have this car since 2 years. Excellent car, nice interior.
Driving with this car is very pleasant. Nice options are included. Example : automatic car boot opening when passing the foot under the car.
But the price is very expensive !
I have news & internet in the car but you can only see a few titles when running. It's better for security but it's complicate to use it.

Of all the used cars I've owned, the one I like the most
2001 model 316ti, 1.8L, 115bhp, manual. Bought it four years ago with 65K km, now 13 years old done 124K km. Before buying, I was worried about whether or not the engine was up to NZ's mountainous roads, since my previous cars all had more powerful engines. Worries dissipated - the manual gearbox's top 3 gears are perfectly spaced for overtaking. Unusually frugal car - all my other cars, mostly automatics, averaged 8-8.5 km/L consisting of a mix of urban and motorway driving, usually without aircon. This car averages 11.5 km/L - for a car that ...weighs nearly 1300 kg, it is more frugal than the '81 Mirage 1.2 I used to have years ago. And on any long drive outside Auckland, I can average up to 16 km/L, which is really in diesel territory. The seats are perfect - the back support is right and I can drive five hours straight without a backache, and that's with no lumbar support adjustment. The body is solid, the doors thunk reassuringly. Having owned and driven front-wheel drive cars all the time, a trip to a friend's wedding in Napier five hours away through hills, gorges, and winding mountain roads mostly at 100 km/h and driving back at night in heavy rain, I realised that I made the right decision buying this car. Yes, there is a difference between FWD and RWD cars, and although this car doesn't manifest it as incisively as a Mazda MX-5, a tug of the wheel makes it very clear that the chassis and related components including the steering are there to see me through. I don't have to second-guess what the car is going to do when I suddenly get to a blind corner at speed. Third to fifth gear ratios are spaced perfectly - though at some expense of the 2nd-to-3rd gear gap which could be better-spaced for city driving. Its handling is sure-footed and confident - despite having 195/65-15 tyres, and a rear suspension taken from the previous 3-series cars to save cost. Problems? Three instances the car was not driveable: 4 years ago, after owning the car at 9 years old, one of the coils went. Last March (2014) the original 2001 BMW battery finally packed up without warning. And three weeks ago, a second coil failed. All my cars have been proactively maintained for wear and tear parts, so rollers and a tensioner for the alternator belt have been done (I thought it was the water pump and got worried), two front suspension control arms, front and rear brakes done about two years apart, minor oil leak near a vacuum pump fixed with an inexpensive gasket. Strangely the thermostat, water pump and expansion tank haven't failed yet. The clutch has a shudder taking off in 1st gear at times, I thought it was just me not having driven a manual in 10 years, but it hasn't gotten any worse over the last 4 years at all. Will get it done one of these days, mechanic isn't too worried. The timing chain has a stretch though, a common problem for a car of this engine and vintage. Fortunately the chain is up front, will get that done and replace the two remaining original coils while at it. Parts prices? Fair. Maintenance cost of this car is similar to my 2001 Mitsubishi Galant I had before this. None of the parts replaced had prices that took me aback, the coils for example were NZ$86 each (vs. $300 for a Mitsubishi Cedia). And I always use an independent mechanic.
The love of my life sent me broke!
My deceased father purchased a brand new 325Ci auto coupe in 2002. In 2010, a year after my father passed away, my mother didn't want to keep it. I decided to swap my Ford Fiesta which I purchased new in 2009 with the bimmer. As it had been in the family, I knew the car's history. No accidents, serviced by BMW, always garaged and regularly washed. Basically showroom condition. Car had done 125000km. The first 2 years no problems at all. I was loving the luxury, the style, the power, the handling, the steering! Yes I was hooked! Then the cracks...began to appear! Things were starting to wear out or break! One rear parking sensor - $500. Drive belt snapped (replaced with air con belt) - $800. Air con resistor packed it in - $600. Servicing costs between 1200-1500 dollars each time. Suspension bushes - $600. Father had replaced them 4 years earlier too. Rubber door seal on passenger side came apart. Quoted a $1000 to replace. Father replaced drivers side previously. Recently went for wheel alignment thinking the car needed it. Turns out one of the struts have bent thus the shocks need replacement. Quoted between $1700-2000. Recent service $1500. They also told me the diff is cracked. Leaking some oil, may require replacement. 4 new tyres needed soon. If they are the same "continentals" looking at about 3k to replace the four. Rear brakes due - $700. Reversing passenger side mirror packed it in last week. The love affair had to end along with my credit! Traded it in on a brand new Hyundai! Oh the shame! Moral of the story... if you can't afford to buy a new or near new BMW and maintain it... Forget it! Styling, handling, steering, luxury leather and wood trimmed interior. The power and the fact it made me feel good! Too expensive to maintain. If anythings breaks or wears out you are up for a fortune.
2001, 330i, bought in NZ. Sold before moving to Australia. Stunning car to drive. A nice example and fairly well looked after. Solid feel, brilliant handling, seamless power to blow off standard Commodore & Falcon V8's. Had a couple of repairs under warranty that when I compare with the cost of the old Honda I have now, makes the back up service and cost of running these far better than most people realise. Euro cars have a bad rap because people buy older ones that people have not looked after and passed on before they have to pay repair bills.... Four days for a light control module to come from Germany and fitted to a small NZ town!! Typical German service. Japs couldn't do that... Solid feel, awesome handling, smooth, powerful, brilliant parts service from factory. Light control module went under warranty, poor rear seat room for big people, back seat not comfortable on long trips.
Low fuel consumption, good peformance for a 1500 kg vehicle
I like the diesel 320d version a lot as uses less fuel (around 7L/100km) mixed driving, and servicing intervals are 25.000 kms or 1 year. Basically all you need is change the motor oil and brake fluid every 2 years, and top up other fluids if necessary. Filters are replaced every 100.000 kms.
With proper TLC these cars should last a lifetime.
You pay for the badge too BUT if you're unlucky you may end up with frequent trips to dealerships.

My boyfriend bought this car when it has done 60,000 kilometers. It was a 4 door 1998 sedan. We really loved the car and wouldn't want to sell it if it wasn't too expensive to maintain. It was a wonderful car to drive around. However, when we had to fix anything it was so dear so we went back to purchase a Toyota.
Great German luxury. Great to drive. Excellent handling. Very easy and fun to drive.
Expensive to maintain which was the main reason we sold the car. The parts are very dear. Not very good value for money.
My 323i M Sport is now 18 months old. Had minimal issues with it, all fixed at BMW Melbourne with no fuss at all. Have just replaced tyres with non run flats, and it makes a world of difference to noise, ride and handling. Just needed to buy the "Mobility" pump/puncture repair kit from dealer.

I think it is an excellent car to drive. Have not had any problem with it thus far. The interiors are plush and the aircon is excellent. There is plenty of boot space. For me the real negative is the fact that the car is underpowered. There is the sports option, but it is quite noisy when you are using the sports option.
Own a 320i. Fantastic interiors. Looks great.
Underpowered. Run flat tires makes the ride a bit bumpy.

Are the side mirrors powered on a 318i 2004 BMW and lf so how do you engage to make them work
I’ve bmw 320i e90 2007, the engine oil level light (yellow) went off that engine oil level is below minimum. I topped up with 1L then I checked oil level and the indicator showed that oil level is OK. One week later, engine oil light went off again, i checked oil level and indicator showed that +1L of engine oil is needed to be topped up, I did add 1L. Two weeks later, engine oil light went off again, I checked the level, it was below minimum, then I checked the oil level again just 2hours later and oil level was OK (above minimum) !!!! [There’s no any oil leak at all]. Can I please know what’s going on with engine oil in my car???!!!
Been thinking about getting a 2005 E90 330i, are there any particularly bad known issues with this model, engine wise (N52 engine I think) or with anything else to do with the car? Don't really want to be continually spending money on fixing it.
Hi Jez P, these are wonderful cars to drive. The steering feedback and the road grip of these are awesome. Some of those do suffer from coil pack issues, and injector issues. But my understanding is those are not common and rather common problem is their plastic water pumps rear with time. Check the car with a good independent bmw mechanic. That is worthy. Not buying the car because of fear of these issues at least in my view is like dumping a Victoria’s Secret model because she caught a common cold - happens sometimes, but nothing to split hair upon.
